Hey guys, this is my first topic created so be kind! I've lurked here for a while, but finally got an idea for a good thread.

So I was round a friends the other day and we decided to watch:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hole_(2009_film)

It's a fantasy horror-thriller. The main plot is that whatever your greatest fear is, is what is in - and can then come out - of the hole. For instance, one of the main characters is scared of clowns and so is attacked by a clown. Another is scared of his Dad and so his Father is in the hole. It can also work psychologically, for instance one of the characters could be considered to be afraid of the dark and so, when the hole comes for him, all the lights in his house shatter and he is left in darkness and killed.

Personally I think mine would be a fear of being alone. I think the hole would manifest this by taking me and leaving me in a room, in the dark, on my own, with just a clock to show the passing of time. That thought is enough to scare me.

That, or a MASSIVE SPIDER!

So Escapists, what is your greatest fear and how would the hole make it possible?

I think the hole would probably bury me alive with the cast of glee singing acapella in my ear

Actually scratch that, eaten by sharks definetely, I have a shark nightmare pretty regularly

Uh...Flaming Clown Spiders?

Seriously, I'm thinking being tortured. I'm not in any position where that's really likely, but the mere thought of being put through horrible pain, I just...uh.

I'm afraid of dying in a bathroom...

....

Wait, wrong thread.

My greatest fear is someone screwing around with my family and loved ones. It just pushes so many buttons I don't even know where to start.

Drowning.

If I had to pick one, that's my single greatest fear.
Yeah, that's got to be one of the worst. Although I'm not sure how it compares to dry drowning. On the one hand there you've got the oxygen you'd need right around you but can't get it in, on the other hand it's probably missing the long battle to stay afloat...

There are lots of unpleasant and terrible things, but the thing I'm actually afraid of, the thing that produces that irrational, phobia-type horror, is computer viruses. They freak me the hell out.

SHET. I didn't get here fast enough.

OT: Well, I've always been afraid of being stuck in a small room, like a bathroom, without any means of getting out. No doors, no windows, just a small, empty, blank room. Realistically I'm not sure how the situation would ever arise, but that's why there's such a thing as irrational fears.

Also slow, painful, agonizing wounds. Like, say, a gunshot that takes off half my face but I'm still alive, only in the worst pain imaginable until I'm in twenty-hour surgery and then stuck in a coma for a decade. I'd rather die, to be perfectly honest.

Dying.

Not actually being dead, oh no, the act of dying. Or more specifically, I'm afraid it'll be a painful and horrifying experience.
I am perfectly at peace with the fact that I will eventually one day die, I am more afraid HOW I will die like topaz and other posters have mentioned.

Drowning is definitely up there. Although since it is common for drowning victims to try to kill those who try to rescue them in an effort to stay alive (which is why lifeguards basically knock you out i think), I am hoping that eventually the fear causes you to go insane and that...mitigates the horribleness in some way.

But my personal fear is being eaten alive, especially slowly (like via zombies)

I don't really know what my greatest fear is, and I think I like it that way. Dont get me wrong, many things scare me. But I don't think i could label anything as my "Greatest" fear. The only thing I could think of would be the idea of loneliness. Not just not having any friends or what not, but the idea of being completely alone, and having memories of times when you knew you weren't. Then all of a sudden, everything is gone.

But not even that would "Scare" me. I dont want it to happen, but im not scared at the thought of it.

Death.

I mean, let's be honest, if you're afraid of something, it's probably because it may result in your death. Or you irrationally believe it may harm you in some way, which could lead to death. I guess there are a few exceptions, though. If you're afraid of toilets or something it's probably not because you're afraid of dying on the can.

Anyway... that's mine. I don't live in fear of it, but yeah--any fears I have exist because the prospect of dying does not thrill me. If no one died, there'd be nothing to be scared of.

"You once asked me, Winston, what was in room 101. I think you know. Everyone does. The thing that is in room 101... is the worst thing in the world".

Seriously speaking, you have to assume that there's something so horrifying that our very being recoils to it, while at the same time being something very personal to us.

Since no one said this, I'll mention Alzheimer's. Losing your yourself bit by bit. It won't be horrific for the person in question of course, but if there's one thing that I don't ever want to happen to me it's that. It's a death of the mind.

Failure.
Things like pain and death are a part of this world and beyond my control, and so I can accept them. However, I fear my own failing, whether it be failure to make my way and find success in the world, or to disappoint my team and lose in a competitive game such as a match of Dota 2 (so much so that I rarely play the game against actual players, despite the satisfying and vicious taste of victory I greatly enjoy.)

Basically anything that you can find if you google images creepypasta. Just horrible disfigured faces, bleeding eye sockets, stitched mouths, jagged wide grins, especially if it stares at me. It's never their grotesque bodies that scare me, just their faces...staring at me...

Death, I suppose. But only if I really start to heavily think on it.

As for practical, every day fears, heights, easily. Can't stand 'em. High dives, big roller coasters, zip lines, you name it. If it's an open height, I'm going to do everything I can do stay the hell away from it. Things like airplanes and tall buildings don't really affect me, thank god.

It really came to a head though when I joined the Navy. One of the things you have to do is go off a 20-30ft high board into a pool. I made it (I just toed the edge and let them shove me) but that moment of free fall before I hit the water was the only time I can recall where my mind was absolutely BLANK with white-hot fear. Never, EVER, want to do anything like that again.
