Your thoughts on Gen 8 so far

The Wii U has been absolutely killing it for me- Nintendo Land, NSMBU/NSL, Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Lego City, Mario Kart 8, Wonderful 101, Super Smash Bros., Captain Toad... Plus we've got Kirby just released, Splatoon and Yoshi on the way, along with Mario Maker later in the year and Zelda and Star Fox in development. Awesomeness.

Still waiting for more reasons to get a PS4, and the lack of backwards compatibility kneecaps that significantly.

And as usual, getting an Xbox seems about as enjoyable as eating a nice plate of steaming shit. Unsalted.

I am a tightwad. Sure I PC game all the time, but I only get one console every 10 years. Having grown considerably pennypinchier, I opted to get an older 8th gen console...a 2DS, because when the New 3DSXL came out, these babies dropped to $90 (only for Christmas), & all the rest of the money went into games.

Guilty Gear Xrd - Great game one of the mai reasons I upgraded even though it runs on PS3 I wanted the best version.
Destiny - Garbage nough said
Dead or Alive 5: Last Round - Really like the game but not worth an upgrade on its own
Mortal Kombat X - Heavily imbalanced in some cases borderline busted fighter that puts style above substance but its still fun. Im just not convinced NetherRealms can make a good solid fighter they just dont seem to know what they are doing in that regards. But they can make entertaining games and know how to present and sell them.

WiiU I have

Bayonetta 2 (and 1) - Amazing game easily the best game out this gen for me so far.
Wonderful 101 - havent played yet
Mario Kart 8 - hated it thought it was absolute trash tbh, easily the worst MK game I have ever played. I actually got rid of it thats how little I got out of it.
Super Smash Bros - Ok game but not for me
Rayman Legends - Great platformer loved all of it.
Some Lego game that came with the system - havent played and probably never will
Monster Hunter - Good but I dont think its for me at least not single player.

I dont regret buying either but there is not that much on them that interests me. I recently upgraded my PC so think its only slightly less powerful than the PS4 now and I can play some old games on that but again not much.

Xbox One has Killer Instinct that I am interested in but nothing else and I am not getting that console on priniciple. Will be the first gen since the PSX era I have not owned themall.

They've still given me absolutely bugger all to be interested in to the point of buying a new console is my thought.

I mean honestly there's just genuinely nothing there that is appealing enough to want a new console for that isn't on PC. I want a reason to want a PS4 because I want it for MGS5. But I can't justify the entire console for MGS5, I need more than that.

I thought FFXV was going to be another reason and if it'd been amazing then I could probably just about justify it for FFXV and MGS5 together. But having seen a video of the gameplay I'm monumentally disappointed. It seems Square Enix can't make a proper Final Fantasy game with a normal turn-based battle system anymore (hell, they've been unable to make one in thirteen years at this point, the last one was X; XI and XIV were MMOs, XII was an absolute monstrosity and XIII was eh at best, control one character? Really?). It honestly made me feel sick to watch. And even worse that people are applauding this garbage.

The Order was basically a flop. Watch Dogs didn't exactly turn out to be the huge exciting system-seller that they wanted. I can't justify buying it for GTAV with FPS mode when I could just get that for PC if I wanted it badly enough. Bloodborne is intriguing but the only reason I have any Dark Souls games at all is because one was on Games with Gold on my 360 a while back. Fun, but I've not come anywhere near to getting through it.

Hell at this point I'm almost tempted to get a Wii U because at least that thing has some fresh games on it. Alternatively I'll just go back to playing Fire Emblem on my 3DS, Persona 4 on my Vita and working through my gigantic backlog for my PS3. For me there's little reason beyond "having the new console" to want to buy a PS4 and I pretty much refuse to buy an XBOne at a high price on principle after the nonsense they tried to pull at launch with that thing.

All in all a gigantic disappointment.

I've had a Wii u in my house for the past two weeks and it's gone now. I've played a lot of smash bros on it and a bit of bayonetta, I saw a bit of pikmin 3. It also has backwards compatability and the virtual store. It all looked good, fun, functional.

All in all, though, I won't buy one myself. I have limited money and I already have a good PC and a steam library of games I like that the Wii u and its games just couldn't compare to. The PS4 and Xbox1 are wholly unimpressive to me. I can't really think of anything that those consoles would have to offer, that I'd be interesting in for hundreds of euros.

I have a Vita but didn't mention it as it came out during Gen 7. It is fun to read about people having fun with the DS but, even the newest DS games: they're essentially N64 grade, correct?

I've also had to suffer the waits for games to ready themselves and for new updates to occur, and some of these can drag on for a long while. There are also problems with buggy releases, which frankly marred my initial experience with Dead or Alive 5: Last Round.

I just got Sunset Overdrive yesterday and I'm pretty excited to play it BUT just turning on the XB1 it had another download to do. Then the game required a multi-gig download. And Internet is about 1-2 meg a second in the room where the XB1 is located. I left it loading over-night. I haven't gotten to play it.

The thing came with a 1/2 terabyte drive. It appears to load almost entire games onto the drive. This
1) Takes forever to just start a game
2) Is taking up the drive space. I have the Master Chief collection, Forza 5 and Sunset Overdrive and the thing is telling me I have about 200 Gig left. Yikes.

If I could have one, and only one console, it would be the PS4. PS+, great games, the most powerful console out there, games that don't take forever to start.

Sounds like I need to get Mortal Kombat soon. People are loving it, though stating it is hard. I like my games easy. Very easy.

Oh I got myself a new mid-range pc instead and it works wonderfully.

If so, I do think a PC like that is in my future. And I've got an OK PC hooked up to the family room TV in the basement (has a GTS 250 graphics card!). Plays about as well as an Xbox 360 but to my knowledge, only single player.

Yeah, I need an intervention on my Steam collecting. And www.humblebundle.com isn't helping matters. I literally have 100s of games I haven't even played. It is fun and inexpensive.

I got a deal on Sunset Overdrive: $25 from Amazon. My wallet cried a bit when I got that. $25 would buy a truckload of PC games.

I have to shamefully admit that the biggest reason why I bought one was because Wind Waker is one of my favourite games ever, and my Gamecube copy (along with my Gamecube) was hanging by a thread.

It's a very charming console, but I'm not getting that much use out of it. I even bought The Wonderful 101 due to its status as a fun, unique game, but I really didn't like it much.

I only have 1 controller but you can hook up to 4 onto a receiver, just like a standard 360.
If you exclude emulation (hurr hurr) not too many pc games have couch co-op though!

my thoughts on it - I am going to buy a new PC and avoid the consoles like a plague. There is Bayonetta 2 and Bloodborne that I would like to play but not enough so to buy a piece of hardware for just 1 game. If ps4 was actually backwards compatible I would maybe consider it as is its better to play my PS2 games on an emulaor and PS3 games on PS3. I am not into playing games on so called current gen hardware that is not showing picture of at least 1080p 30fps minimum without any screen artifacts. Also wtf is it with console loading times for stuff and 500GB HDDs when install sizes for games skyrocketing into 50gb regions. thats less than 10 games on disk at a time. Unaceptable imo. This gen just does not appeal to me. 360 and ps3 at least have their uses x1 and ps4 both look lame. Wii U is holding Bayonetta 2 hostage but other than that it has no games that I am into.

The original DS was closer to N64 actually, the 3DS is more on par with the original Wii.

I haven't gotten around to buying a PS4 and Xbox One, because it's mostly pretty ports, the usual suspects and too few good exclusives. I do have a Wii U and I'm pretty happy with it. It satisfies a good chunk of my retro urges and Nintendo's exlusives are often quite original and always super fun. If you look at the amount of time I spend on it, it's still behind the PS3 but the Wii U the type of underdog I like to root for.

(It should be noted I spend over half my gaming time on my 3Ds and Vita. I can't help it, I'm in the middle of a handheld phase! My adorkably lackluster laptop hasn't seen much action the past few months, but that's not anyone's fault but my own. I'm just not in the mood right now.)

I think this thread is the best summation of how the Generation 8 is shaping up.

The most mentioned game is Bloodbourne.

The seemingly most favored games being Bloodbourne and Bayonetta 2, with the Wonderful 101 close behind.

We're a few months away from the next gen systems being two years old.

These lists should be bigger. Why? There are 489 games out for the PS4 right now. Does it even feel close to that? A lot of the games coming out feel so very blah. No need creates no urgency. No urgency creates no interest.

There are some really good games on PS4(though only one really good exclusive, which, you guessed it), but yeah, they arrive with the speed of litigation. Till recently I still had my PS3 to hold me over but I cleared my remaining backlog and squeezed every last bit of enjoyment out of my favorite games for that system.

I'm thinking about buying a PC or something I can hook up to my TV b/c there are a lot of games on Steam I really wanna play. So yeah, really looking forward to that. I guess we'll wait and see for E3, but I don't really see consoles picking up anytime soon to be honest.

No. That was just 2 off the top of my head. There's God of War, Super Smash Brothers, anything else Nintendo made, Twisted Metal, Ratchet and Clank, Naughty Dog's games, etc.

Plus getting decades old games to work on a PC is a pain in the ass. I put in the CD and it just doesn't recognize it while other games it does. At least with consoles you have a definitive cut off point.

Getting decades old games to work on a PC is pretty easy if you know what you are doing, and every game gives you a "definitive" cut off point on its system requirements, but that doesn't mean you can't make it work. PCs have the best backwards compatibility.

My PS4 gets a little love now and then. Currently it's unplugged to save power while we use the A/C.

My PC meanwhile probably wishes I didn't cram so many games onto it's three hard drives. (Two HDD, one SSD)

Overall I'm underwhelmed. It's fun and all, but there's still a ways to go. I sold my Xbox One finally.

How does Red Dead Remption and Bloodborne run on your PC?

RDR is a setting I was never a fan of by a studio I dislike. I wouldn't have played it even if it was on PC.

Bloodborne looks better, and From Software has made good games in the past (port issues nonwithstanding). But the game on PS4 has loading times so long that it has become an internet meme. Rigs with RAID 0 SSD's would blow it out of the water.

Halo 1-3 are all fantastic games, but 2 of those are on PC. And it's not like the 'armored space soldier fights aliens' genre has any scarcity.

The Last of Us? Angry Joe liked it. By all measures it sounds great. I'd play it if it ever got ported (or I'll just emulate it).

Journey/Flower/Catherine/whatever other exclusives that look good - same.

Speaking of emulation, you can already play basically any game from the sixth generation back on PC with higher resolutions, AA, etc. Soon you'll also be able to emulate 7th gen games. And 8th gen.

Even the idea of 'generations' in gaming is obsolete.

Consoles today are basically standalone mobile GPUs with locked OS's, with PCs superior at literally everything. The 8th gen consoles are at the limits of their hardware with many games running sub-1080p 30fps while PCs are moving towards 4k 120fps and immersive VR.

OT: I'll be getting a Wii U soon, but in all honesty, the stables of all three consoles are underwhelming at the moment.
