I am 16 and I hate texting. What's the point? I mean why do you want to spend 5 minutes typing something out that you can call and say in 5 seconds? I just hate it. I hate when I am sitting in class and someone texts me, I do not look at it, and I don't text them back. I leave my phone on in class set to vibrate in case of an emergency, not so people can text me. Then when I don't text them back, they get all offended. "Why didn't you text me back?" they say, "Because I'm not going to pay 17 cents a letter to tell you I can't meet you after school, and because I'm not going to start a big scene in class over something so stupid." And even after I tell them this, I get another text. WTF!!!

Nothing important has ever been sent over text, its a fact. And now they have the sliders that slide back so that you can have a keyboard, so that you can text anywhere with little to no effort. This kind of encourages you to text and annoy everyone. And another thing that pisses me off is when people just text you like a gif image, like the little smiley faces or heats. Whats the point? I will never understand how or why texting has become this huge thing that people do. Most of the time people are texting when they are in a situation when they shouldn't be on the phone, like in class or at a business meeting. If that's the case then get off the phone, stop texting me, pay attention to what your doing, then after your done, call me and tell me what your cat did last night. I can wait until you can talk to me.

Usually if you send me a text message and the header is something along the lines of "My cat" I just delete it right their without reading it. In fact ninety percent of the times I just delete the texts that you send me without even reading them, the other ten percent that I read are from my girl friend, and you know, we all have to make sacrifices for love. And even then I only read them when I have free time, I don't drop everything I'm doing just to read about how bored she is in biology. And now they even made it so that you can post on twitter and myspace (I could do a whole rant on those also) right from your phone. That's just encouraging people to screw off at school and work and write useless crap down.

Technology is a very powerful thing, and should only be used by the right hands, but if technology was in the right hands, then we wouldn't need to be able to type on myspace right from our phones. Anyway I think I'm done now. Later I might start a new post on myspace but as of now post your thoughts on texting. Please defend your statements. Don't just tell me I suck, tell me why I suck.

Edit: Edited to remove the wall of text. But let me add something here, another reason I hate texting is because it has not only become mainstream, but because people think every teenager does it, giving all of us a bad name, some of us are responsible, we are not all girls with A.D.D. who text all through class. Yeah I agree, class is boring most of the time, but you have to endure it like everybody else. But this is one of the things that just makes me face go red with anger to the point where I have a heart attack, people who text while they drive.

Edit: Some one down below just really made my blood pressure go up, they said "we are all technically communicating via text message on this website, so you Kind of contradicted your own argument." Now while everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I can't disagree with that more. Look above at the text, how long do you think it would take to write this all down a cellphone, no this is not texting. Some of us could text our comments on websites because we only write a sentence, but most of us go in depth about what we want to say, like me. It would take days to text what I write down in about an hour on the internet.

It's far cheaper for me to text than call. It costs 10p per text and 20p just to connect a call without the charge for time connected after that.

Plus I hate talking to people over the phone. Something about it just makes me slightly uncomfortable and I'd rather communicate through a textual medium instead.

Edit: Also I just like to feel connected to my friends and to be able to send them short anecdotes or arrange plans quickly without having to ring up each and every person in my phone book I want to. I can simply choose to send a message to all those whom it may concern.

Seriously, it's infuriating. It takes longer to decode the message than to type it.

EDIT: On topic: I only text when I just want to ask or report something quickly. For example, I may text my parents to let them know I should be getting home in about 30 minutes, or to tell my friends "I'm coming" when we agree to get together somewhere.

I don't like phones in general myself. Sure, it's cheaper to text than to actually phone someone, but all in all I'd rather just talk to them in person. I hate people who text entire conversations to each other when they're only bloody two metres away from each other...

I have free texting on my plan, and so does my girlfriend, so we text each other pointlessly. If I have something important to tell somebody, I'll call them or talk to them in person.

"I love you, momma- can't talk, I'm at work, but I can't wait to see you!"

Yeah, sometimes texts are worth it.

I don't like texting personally i feel its a step back in technology. I also feel no reason to type out a whole conversation when talking is an option. I do feel it has a place when you can't talk and need to sned a message so not completly usless but i chose not to do it

I can see your point. But I disagree. Texting is great because there are some things you don't need to have a conversation over for example if I am meeting someone and am late, a simple txt saying "sorry l8 b there in 10" or some thing is much more practical than a whole phone conversation.

Also there are times when you can't talk, like in school or a meeting. Now you pointed out that kids in school shouldn't be on their phones, because they're there to learn or whatever. I'm in year 12 and honestly, its the biggest waste of time. More than half the time I'm correcting my idiot teachers mistakes, the sooner you realize just how fucked and pointless school is the better. But back to texting, really I think you're making a whole big fuss over nothing. Nobody forces you to txt, if you really hate it so much then just don't do it.

I do it only because its the only way I can get a hold of anyone anymore, none of them seem to be at home anymore so I can't call them, and if I call their cell they just ***** at me for it and tell me to text them.

And I do agree that it is infuriating when people text in class. The girl that used to sit beside me in my Sociology class would text all class, even after being told to put her phone away. I kinda wish I threw her phone out the window, might have gotten her to stop.

Lol anyone who gets told off for txting in class is retarded. It's so simple to do and easy to hide, nobody with half a brain should ever get caught doing it.

Try having a poem written like that in an exam.

But yeah I don't text. I just, you kow, talk to them on the phone or in person.

Exactly. I even stated the same argument to ny friends who were asking for my number so they can text me. I gave it to them if they decided to call me but instead they were constantly texting. It got so annoying that I actually stopped taking my Cellphone to school.
