1. The "Halo" series
-Mainly because I've had so many memories playing those games. Never before have I screamed at my headset out of joy and fear and excitement at the oncoming zombie hordes in Halo 3 custom matches. Or constantly pushing to get one more match in before bed during the wee hours of the night in Halo 2

2. Bioshock
-I could talk about the marvels of this game for hours. But I don't want to bore you, and im sure most of the gaming community has already experienced this true marvel. Key point: It's story

3. GoldenEye 64
-This is the game that got me into the FPS genre. Waking up those early mornings to play with my brother and my dad, Golden gun only for most of the day. Games like GoldenEye will never get old, and I'm sure somewhere out there, someone is playing it right now.

4. Battlefield Bad Company (1 and 2)
-These two games showed me that something could not only be competitive, but a helluva lot of fun. Playing gold rush for literally hours on end, or trying to capture all the points in a conquest match is such a rewarding thing, because the matches are usually so close, it actually feels like a victory when you win, not just the end of another match.

5. Fallout New Vegas
-I picked this one mainly because when i first played Fallout 3, I was too young and nieve to fully understand what was going on. The concept of "Go anywhere, do anything" was new to me and I felt completely overwhelmed. When i played NV however, i finally got into it and frankly it blew me away. I must have put more than 80 hours into that game and I wouldn't complain about a single one.

6. Rage
-Rage's combat system was nothing new, shoot the bad guys before you die, advance to the next room, repeat. For some reason though, playing Rage actually made me feel like I was ina deserted wasteland. I felt like my life was on the line, I actually had some remorse for blowing away the mutants, It wasn't their fault they were mutants...If only the ending didn't suck.

7. Time Crisis (All)
-This one may be a bit weird, but for those of you who don't know, Time Crisis used to be the main series of shooting games you would play at arcades. You'd take the littl3e plastic gun and shot your way through mobs of enemies, trying to dodge the stray bullets that would hit you. I loved this game so much I even went out and bought a hom copy with my own gun.

That's all that are coming to me right now, so let's call this my top 7

I'm disappointed with the lack of No One Lives Forever.

I'll throw Enemy Territory in as it's what made me fall in love with objective & class based FPS multiplayer.

I wouldn't count the Fallout series as one of my favorite FPS' myself as the shooting in it was quite crappy, it just did other things a lot better.

1. Vietcong

The first time I ever saw iron sights and graphics that actually allowed you to hide if you were careful. Vietcong had a lot of original ideas that I think worked very well, like the use of an "actual" map, scary ass traps, very claustrophobic and atmospheric tunnel levels etc. I have lots of fond memories of playing the multiplayer too.

2. Half-Life

What can I say, it made every fps before it look 10 years older.

3. Doom (1&2)

I'm sure Doom is still the fps that I've spent most hours with. A very large portion of them just going through the shareware version over and over again.

4. Counter Strike (Beta versions only)

I had loads of fun with CS before it just started getting too "professional"

5. No One Lives Forever 2

Never played the first one, but I still enjoyed the sequel a lot. Hadn't played a funny game in a while at that point.

6. Thief (1&2)

I don't know if Thief actually counts as an fps, but what the heck. Great atmosphere, great idea, great games.

7. Duke Nukem 3D

Boobs... (and a good game otherwise too I guess)

8. Bioshock

To my great shame I never got to play the original System Shocks, but I loved Bioshock's story and the way it was told. Rapture is a horrifying place, and I mean it in a good way.

9. Alien versus Predator (the first pc one)

The sound of facehuggers still gives me nightmares. I found each campaign to be fun and entertaining in a very different way. With the Predator I just enjoyed being over-powerful, killing everything except the Queen (and the goddamn facehuggers) with the wristblade, and just establishing my dominance as the master race. With the Alien I loved sneaking behind and above unsuspecting victims and biting their heads off. And the Marine of course was just good old fps fun with great weapons.

10. Half-Life 2

Probably shouldn't be this low on the list, but I liked the original more and AvP was panickier than this. Awesome game, but I just couldn't get that into it for some reason. Maybe because I just felt like Gordon didn't have any purpose in this one. To me he just seemed to be trying to get away from this depressing city without causing any fuss, but everyone just kept shooting at him or holding him as some kind of Jesus.
I think that's why he never said anything. He just wanted to be alone.

Well that's my list. The order is somewhat funky, but all the games are about roughly where they should be.

EDIT: I didn't include any fps:s that are also rpg:s. Otherwise I think I would've included Deus Ex and Fallout 3.

I am going to cheat like a bastard and count all the games where you are in First Person, point at things and they die, a FPS. Because other people did it too. I could write an entire article of the awesomeness of these games, but meh.

1. Half Life 2

2. Deus Ex

3. Thief 1 and 2 (They have to share a spot, now. Sorry, darlings)

4. Ghost Recon

5. Half Life

6. System Shock 2

7. Bioshock

8. Doom

9. Wolfenstein 3D

10. Goldeneye

10. Halo

1/ No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way

2/ System Shock 2

3/ Enemy Territory both games

4/ Battlefield 2142

5/ Deus Ex

6/ Hexen (Yep, not Quake or Doom, I'm going with Hexen)

7/ Ghost Recon (I love Rainbow Six too but the tactical flexibility of Ghost Recon won me over)

8/ S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadows of Chernobyl

9/ Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries (Shut up, it counts)

10/ Medal of Honour: Allied Assault

Well, let's see here...

1. Shadowrun
A game I really talk too much about but perhaps my favourite game ever. Why? Teleporting through walls, seeing through walls, deflecting bullets with katanas, gliding, ninja trolls, ressurecting team mates, (mostly) non regenerating health... The list goes on. The guns are standard (pistol, smg, rifle, shotgun, katana (okay, not a gun), sniper, minigun, rocket launcher) and that list is all of them, but they're well balanced and each has a usage in fights. It's more the way the abilities mix things up and layers of tactics to a shooter.

2. James Bond 007: Nightfire
There's no way I can have Goldeneye on he N64 on my list after playing this. Had so much fun with this game, both in the campaign and in multiplayer. If I had to guess, I'd say more people were too busy with Timesplitters to give this a chance.

3. Halo: Reach
Probably so high on my list because it's what I play a lot over the last few months with friends. But it's a pretty good experience.

4. Modern Warfare 2
I enjoyed it enough that it kept me playing to 65/70 of 9th Prestige... That pretty much says it all. Though I thought the campaign wasn't as good as it's predecessor, I prefered the multiplayer, and the addition of co-op special ops was a nice touch.

5. Team Fortress 2
Would be higher on my list if I didn't play this mostly as a first person back-stabber. The rush of tricking someone into thinking you're on their team, and then get the follow up stab is immensely satisfying.

6. Timesplitters 2
Another game that might be higher up my list, though for a different reason. My PS2 broke down ages ago so havn't been able to play this game as much as I would have. Amazing game for multiplayer, and the level creator was something I messed around with far too much. Loved the level of customisation you could have in matches.

7. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Really liked the campaign, but multiplayer wasn't always for me. Still though, enjoyed it a lot.

8. Battlefield: Bad Company 2
I found the multiplayer pretty fun, but most of it's appeal was from playing it with friends. The single player I found so dull I couldn't force myself to finish. Thankfully the multiplayer makes up for it enough to grab a spot on the list.

If Third person shooters were allowed, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System would sneak in at 7 and Gears of War would get into the list, probably just above Battlefield.

8. Wolfenstein 3D (nostalgia points)
9. Bulletstorm (don't judge me)
10. Medal of Honor (of course the old one)

1. Halo CE
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
3. Time Splitters 2
4. XIII
5. Halo 3
6. Borderlands
7. Left 4 Dead
8. Halo Reach
9. Golden Eye
10. The first James Bond game for Xbox, I can't remember it's name, but I think it is Nightfire

Its hard to rank my favorite FPS against each other because I like them for different things. Halo CE for it's campaign, MW2 for how fun SnD was, TS2 because of how good it is in all things, XIII for it's timeless graphics, great story telling, and awesome combat, Halo 3 for how much fun multiplayer was, Borderlands for the silliness, Left 4 Dead for the awesome multiplayer, Reach for how much I dominate multiplayer even after a long time away from it, Golden Eye for being my first real FPS, and that James Bond Xbox game for how much fun it was to cross-map bots with the remote controlled missile.

Edit: Anyone who doesn't have Halo CE on their list, hasn't played it.

I have not played as many FPSs as i would like.. especially some of the classics, so I'm grabbing for straws towards the end..

1 Half Life - hands down best FPS in my opinion

2 Borderlands - More so cause I've had a great time with friends then the actual game play or "story"

3 L4D2 - have really enjoyed onslaughts of zombies

4 Half Life 2 - Super super fun, a few dull spots I thought but really liked it none the less

5 BioShock - Really liked the whole atmosphere

6 Tribes Ascend - I'm actually pretty terrible... buut still super fun

7 TF2 - always fun to pick up and play a few rounds

8 Fallout 3 - I liked this one better than NV despite some of the advances in the other,

9 F.E.A.R. - I was expecting less shooter more scary, for better or for worse it was more the other way around but it was still fun

10 Crysis - pretty good variety of approaches of things to do
