#1. Jill Valentine - I wasn't a big fan of her role in Resident Evil 5 but to me she's a gaming icon.

#2. Liara T'soni - From the naive scientist to the cold and calculating Shadow Broker, she's been one of my favorites since my Shepard met her on Therum back in 2007. She's also the star of one of my favorite DLC's "Lair of the Shadow Broker."

#3. Samus Aran - Need I say more?

#4. Chun Li - My preferred SF fighter.

#5. Alex Vance - Great example of how to not over-sexualize a female character in a game.

Honorable Mentions: Morrigan (Dragon Age: Origins), Talim (Soul Calibur), Lara Croft (Tomb Raider), Tali Zorah Vas Normandy (Mass Effect Series), Bastilla Shan (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic).
#1 Anna the Tiefling- planescape torment, I just liked her personality a lot.
#2 Chell or Samus, can't decide.
#3 Imoen- baldurs gate 1/2
#4 Alex Vance
#5 Marle -chrono trigger

1. Kreia - Kotor II, Willing to teach you the ways of the force but in reality using you for her own goals and desires she is definitely worth number 1.

2. Juhani - Kotor, She was a victim of the darkside but you saved her (or killed her). Through your journey you learn how much more complex a character she is and having to struggle with her emotions through it all even lashing out at you for helping cause the destruction of Taris.

3. Kasumi Goto - ME 2 One character I wish they gave more story too. She is the master thief and well deserving of that title as she helps you rob one of the most important people in the galaxy, only to be forced to destroy the last remaining memory of her lost love.

4. Sierra - Legend Of Mana, A gaurdian of one of the 3 dragons, she is forced to fight her brother in order to stop him from raising the underworld and destroying the world. Her love of her brother though gets in the way and you constantly see the internal struggle she faces when she is forced to stop him.

5. Theresa - Fable I, II The sister of the protagonist in fable one and the guide in 2. Though I prefer her in one for she was blinded at a young age but has the gift of foresight and was taken in by the King of the Bandits. Until the fateful day you come, you still get the sense of love she has for you but in the end leaves all choices up to you even the choice to kill her to obtain the Sword of Aeons.

- Valanice from King's Quest
- Alyx from HL2
- Gretel Grosse from Wolfenstein
- I dunno, Birdo? Glados? I'm running out of them.

I'm just going by games I played, but there aren't too many good females among them.

Off the top of my head and excluding technically-not-human characters like GLaDOS:

#1: Kasumi Goto from Mass Effect. Wonderful character...witty and talented. I really wished she'd be more active in Mass Effect 3. That's not a unique issue to her and I was glad she was included but...wait, sidetracked! She was fantastic, let's leave it at that.

#2: Jack from Mass Effect. Some people don't like her, fair enough. I like the whole 'hiding sorrow through rage' angle and general bad-assery that she entails. She's like an embodiment of revenge fine-tuned into a double-edged sword. Getting on her good side makes her one hell of a worthwhile ally.

#3: Heather from Silent Hill. Wonderful protagonist, and a surprisingly believable performance in a series somewhat notorious for bad acting. She's strong-willed and determined, but manages to portray it against the horror without coming off as 2-dimensional.

#4: Female Shepard from Mass Effect (there's a lot of that, isn't there?). Manshep strikes me as being the typical B-movie Sci-fi hero, which is fine, but it lacks depth. Femshep on the other hand comes off as someone who's been caught up in disaster and carries the weight of the world on her shoulders in some desperate attempt to make things right, or at least matter. Duty-bound and personal.

#5: Jenny from The Darkness. Her sequences really epitomize what made that game so memorable. She ties the game to a meaningful place really helps to draw you into the mindset of Jackie. She's beyond important to him, and that becomes a point of empathy only a few scenes in. Pretty remarkable for a character that never enters the core gameplay.

Visas Marr

I don't really get why people bring Femshep (and the like) into these lists. Yes all the options are written by another author who isn't you. But still everything starting from her looks is customized by you as close to your own ideals as the options allow. Too much of it is your personal Mary Sue.

5: Zoey - Left 4 Dead - Becuase, why not. She's the original Female apocalypse survivor.
4: Princess Zelda - The legend of Zelda - She's pretty cool for a princess. Especially in windwaker. Pirate princesses. Don't see too many of those these days.
3: Katt Monroe - Star Fox - Definately one of the cooler female Star Fox characters. While only a relatively minor character, still worth the notice for her amazing ship in Command, and rather humourous relationship with Falco.
2: Jade - Beyond Good and Evil - Did you play that game!? She was badass. With just a staff a camera and the assisstance from a pig, she saved the world from alien invasion. Go figure.
1: Tifa - Final Fantasy - Tifa definately holds a high badass status. Not only is she one of the coolest party members in FFVII, but she punches everything to death, while all the other characters have to use weapons. She is definately packing punches.
I actually forgot to put Jade on my honorable mentions list, she kicks ass.

Easy:

1. Terra (FFVI)
2. Celes (FFVI)
3. All the Zeldas' (If you need to ask, I will kill you)
4. Rinoa (FFVIII)
5. Galadriel may not count, but hey, she has featured in games, so I'm putting her down here.

In no particular order

Heather Mason from Silent Hill 3
Alyx Vance from Half-Life 2
Jade from Beyond Good & Evil
The Boss from Metal Gear Solid 3
Jen Tate from Primal
Tali'Zorah from Mass Effect
Farah from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

All of those were believable, relatable characters with an actual brain and reasonably-sized tits. They were developed as characters first, not simply as nerd-bait - and if they still are nerd-bait, it's mostly for their personality and story arc, and not because of dat ass.

I know I've got seven, but fuck you, I can't choose! :p

1. The Boss - She is a badass, she has a motherly vibe, willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good. I personally think she is the best female character in any game ever. She is sexy but not over sexulized.

2. Morrigan from Dragon Age. Smart, witty, dark black hair, yellow eyes, voiced by Claudia Black - whats not to love?

3. Sarcastic FemHawke - a personal favorite, her relationship with her crew, her up-beat personality considering a lot of shit goes down around her. I would marry her if she was real.

4. Queen Azshara - Warcraft - Can't really explain why I like her, but for some reason I find her completely awesome.(Yes, I know she is hardly in WoW - but she is and she has established lore - deal with it)

5. Naoto Shirogane - Persona 4 - She has one of the better stories in P4 - and the Christmas scene if you pick her for Christmas event? Priceless.(think it's Christmas event)

5) Routier (Record of Agarest War Zero) If there's one thing the RAW games are good at it's populating their games with deep and interesting characters, with some seriously campy over the top dialog, then having a full cast of actors pull it off perfectly. But all that stuff is peripheral to why I like Routier so much, in a nutshell: she's afraid of bugs. Which seems like an odd thing to latch on to in a character, but I'm afraid of bugs too so it's a very relatable flaw.

4) Rita Mordio (Tales of Vesperia) And speaking of relatable flaws, Rita! She's basically just me, a female version of me. It's hard not to love someone who has your exact same outlook on humanity. There's also some aspects of her personality that I find appealing, like being nice to people she likes, when she's not normally nice to people. It sure is a rare thing to see, even in real life. (Jack from Mass Effect 2 was the same way but Bioware did a terrific job of butchering her personality in ME 3 So she's not on the list anymore)

3) Tali (Mass Effect) Tali to me is like emotional crack, it's like everything she does is scientifically calculated to tug at my heart strings. I love it when she rambles, I love it when she's serious, I love it when she's flirtatious, when she's sad, when she's angry, when she's scared, when anything. I don't know how they did it but I can't get over her. And she's also extremely useful in all 3 games, She's my only real party staple and the only reason to play as Broshep. I think she's also the only character that acknowledges that you had sex with her. (I might be wrong but I don't think any other character mentions the actual boot knocking, that makes me think Tali enjoyed it more which is another plus for her)

2) Fyuria (Record of Agarest War) Back when I was talking about Rita I mentioned that she has the capability of being nice to people. Here's where my appreciation for being treated kindly by party members comes to bare. Fyuria actually apologizes for being mean to you when you first met. Even though she had a perfectly valid reason not to trust you she still apologizes to you. At first she comes across like she has a tough exterior, but she's not cold just for the sake of being cold, you really get the sense that she's always being genuine with you.

1) Samantha Tranynor (Mass Effect 3) I'm not sure she necessarily belongs at the top of the list, but She behaves much the same why my best friend does. and I have very fond memories of playing chess with a lesbian. Is Sam the only reason I didn't stop playing Mass Effect 3 half way through? Yes. Would ME 3 have been better if the game consisted of nothing but chatting with your new Comm. Specialist for 50 hours? Yes. Is she the only reason I wasn't fucking pissed that Liara was completely devoid of personality this game? Yes. I'm sure her accent doesn't hurt either. Sorry Liara and Garrus you're getting dumped.

I'd like to throw honorable mentions to Fiana from Record of Agarest War and Keira from Jak and Daxter. And just to round out the my top 10 Sherufanir (Record of Agarest War) GlaDos (Portal) and Zoe (Left 4 Dead)
