1: Samus Aran. I'm not even that big of a fan of Metroid, but I love Samus.

2: Tali'zorah Nar Rayya/Vas Neema/Vas Normandy

3: Viconia DeVir

4: Fall-From-Grace

5: Erika Redmark

Honorable Mentions: Mara Jade, who would be Number 1 except I don't really see her as being a gaming character so much as a character that was in a game, Mona Sax, Alyx Vance, Bastila Shan, and The Dark Master.

Kreia - KOTOR 2.

Don't really have a list of sorts, but Kreia's easily my favorite female character in gaming. I'd say the best female character. Hell, one of the best characters in games period.

Technically Liara is not a female, I know but someone was going to say it.
"Technically" she is female, because the Asari are both by definition and according to the Mass Effect codex an all-female species. Their reproduction, through parthenogenesis, is similar to that of the very real all-female New Mexico whiptail [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Mexico_whiptail].

Right but she said in the first game quote " Technically I am not a female." So no offence but I am going with what the characters themselves have said over the Codex countering it said that Reapers where a myth and had no bases in fact in the second game. Just saying I trust Liara over the Codex.

Femshep
Samus
Tali
Naoto (Persona 4)
Mitsuru (Persona 3)

Seriously the amount of love that Mitsuru gets is next to nothing.

1)Heather from Silent Hill 3.

#3: Heather from Silent Hill. Wonderful protagonist, and a surprisingly believable performance in a series somewhat notorious for bad acting. She's strong-willed and determined, but manages to portray it against the horror without coming off as 2-dimensional.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I didn't want to like heather first time I saw her tbh, mainly because of the haircut because yes, i am that shallow >< But i warmed up to her quickly enough.

2)Kreai from kotor: I think most people who played it will know why :')

3)Jade from Mortal Kombat. Has been my "main" in mk since mk3. A lot of my love comes from being the first character in mk i got any good with, and only one i easily did fatalities with.

4)Kasumi Goto/Samara from mass effect. Counting them as 1 since are from same game and like them for the opposite reasons: kasumi for being a charming rogue and samara for being a knightly paladin which I didn't expect at first and grew to enjoy hearing her viewpoints.

5) Is it that hard for me to think of 5 good female characters? Apparently it is cos im drawing a blank.. Note to self: buy beyond good and evil now that its on gog and see what fuss about jade (not the mk one) is all about.
Gonna cop out and say Lara Croft...

#1: Catherine (of the Myst series): Upon being rescued from her cell, instead of immediately trying to escape the whole prison, she ACTUALLY DID IMPORTANT THINGS. She's also quite compassionate and caring.

#2: That one chick from Dwarf Fortress: She fought an entire goblin invasion, slew an angry elephant and escaped a rogue lava stream... all while carrying her baby.

#3: Magdalene (The Binding of Isaac): She's the character I finally won the bloody game with. Also, she survived being in The Bindingn of Isaac. That's gotta make her more badass than old Lara Croft.

#4: Zoe (Dreamfall): She looks, behaves and talks like a genuine confused young adult. Do you know how rare that is in any media?

#5: Faith (Mirror's Edge): Because my version of her never attacks anyone but can outmaneuver EVERYONE.
