1. Persona 3 - An awesome story while I get to fill my weeaboo dream of playing as a Japanese highschooler. Nah really that just makes it so much more immersive.
2. Persona 4 - I liked P3's story more but P4's gameplay. Still that formula makes awesome games.
3. Okami - I picked it up because you got to play as a wolf, and it turned out to be beautiful and fun.
4. DMC4 - mmm Dante... Well that's why I got the first one and the gameplay improved with every game.
5. Metal Gear Rising - Awesome hack'n'slash with Raiden. I feel like the only person who liked him from MGS2.
6. Chrono Cross - I love classic JRPGs and this has to be my favorite for the music and environments.
7. Tales of Graces - It gives me that warm fuzzy friendship feeling. Also one of the few JRPGs to do real time combat well.
8. Disgaea 3 - Disgaea goodness, I liked the levels mechanics and characters more than the others.
9. Duke Nukem 3D - Nostalgia, and I've yet to play a better shooter to this day.
10. Skyrim - It's such a chill game, it gives me a simple game to play while watching anime.

I didn't actually mean to blast SotC in my post, from everything I've ever heard it's a damn fine game. I was referring to some other games I've been seeing whose praises have been entirely about how "artistic" they were and not their actual gameplay merits.

My favorite games:

#10: Brutal Legend - set in a fantastic world based on Heavy Metal with lots of action and kickass music. Yes, it's more of an RTS game at times, but at least they let the player actually join in the fight...

#9: Kingdom Hearts - Who would have thought mixing Final Fantasy with Disney would have created something so awesome? It would be higher up on the list, but Square-Enix keeps stretching out the story and just won't make Kingdom Hearts 3 already!

#8: Psychonauts -Fun, surreal, and just plain enjoyable, Psychonauts manages to be quirky without being annoying (last level aside).

#7: Tales of Symphonia - I hear "Tales of Vesperis" is supposed to be the best of the "Tales of" series, but I'm more familiar with this one, and it's nearer to my heart. This game has interesting characters (with a fantastic voice cast) and a surprisingly deep story, it is a must play for JRPG fans... just stay away from the sequel, which isn't nearly as good (and they changed 90% of the English voice cast for some reason).

#6: inFAMOUS - simply put, a fun game that let's you play as either a hero or a jerkass with electrical-based powers as you try to protect your home city...or make it yours to rule.

#5: Batman: Arkham Asylum - 'Nuff said.

#4: Persona 4 - Part life sim, part turn-based combat, Persona 4 is probably the best of the Persona games, especially considering how it's not as damn depressing as it's predacessors.

#3: Mass Effect 2 - While the sequel was impoved on gameplay, there's no doubt that this game had the best story. The characters are engaging and (more or less) likeable, making you want to keep them all alive during the Suicide Mission at the end, which in itself, is impressive.

#2: Spec Ops: The Line - This game... what can be said about this game? All I can tell you is that this game takes a hard look at shooter games... including the stuff your normally don't think about. It's worth a look, but be warned, you'll probably feel like crap afterwards.

#1: Bioshock Infinite - A fantastic game with a deep story that really keeps your interest. It helps that the main characters feel very real and are very likeable. And it manages to have a mindscrewy ending that still somehow makes sense...

I'm gonna start with the best and go down. :p

1) Xenogears - still the best combination of excellent story and fun mechanics in any video game ever
2) Planescape: Torment - excellent story, fun gameplay, if a bit buggy
3) Persona 3 Portable - all the fun of Persona 3 but with a female protagonist
4) Parasite Eve - excellent RPG, good mix of action and gun combat
5) Mass Effect 1 - flawed as it is, I love it. Also, the free roaming in the Mako increases replay value for me.
6) Xenosaga 3 - best of the Xenosaga games in story and gameplay
7) Final Fantasy 7 - still the best FF game
8) Portal 2 - Fun with portals, not with fast reaction times.
9) the Witcher 2 - see my Lets Play for details
10) Catherine - fun with box puzzles

Honorable Mention: The Witcher 1 would have taken the 9 slot, but having read the original Witcher novels, the Witcher's plot now reads like bad fanfiction. Thus the Witcher 2 takes the slot due to having an original story. Still, the Witcher should be mentioned because I still find it mechanically superior to the Witcher 2.

I wonder how many people actually read the lists others have posted. I mean honestly, practically all the post in this thread will just look like this. The saddest thing is most people won't even notice that I'm made this observation and will just scroll past my post to enlighten the world with their top 10 only further proving my point.
It must be really hard being you. I just imagine you walk into places and shout "Look how intelligent I am! You all are pitiful creatures for not recognizing my brilliance!"

I'm jealous of your ability to make broad statements and feel proud of it.

*TornadoCreator walks into a thread about sex and pleasure* "I bet everyone is going to mention how nice orgasms are! The saddest part is I've pointed out that people like orgasms and nobody is going to pat me on the back for it! >: ("

But I digress.

I don't really have an order for my favorite games. I'll just list the games I've played the most in the past.

Breath of Fire 3 [4 is good too] - Played it for years. It grabbed me at an impressionable time in my youth. I still own a copy. Has my favorite fishing minigame of any game.

Super Mario World - Possibly the best Mario game ever released. Each level was about the right length, the themes were great, the music was great, the secrets were great. I recently played it again and still like it.

Donkey Kong Country 3 - I know 2 is "technically" better but I much more liked 3. The map was more interesting and a lot of the secrets were better hidden.

Sim City 4 - I love simulation games and Sim City 4 felt like the ultimate product from Maxis. Shame what became of SimCity 2013.

Skyrim/New Vegas/Oblivion - I never actually got to play Morrowind and now trying to play it is difficult for me. Between these three games I've put about 500-1000 hours into them.

Terraria/Minecraft - I realize they aren't the same games but I played them with the same people at about the same time. 100 or so hours into Terraria and hundreds of hours into Minecraft.

Mortal Kombat 2 - I played it so much on the Genesis that the cartridge stopped working. It looked burned (still have the broken game).

Neverwinter - It gets a lot of shit and some folks say Neverwinter 2 is better but frankly I bought so many copies of Neverwinter that it'll probably be fondly remembered by me forever.

Batman: Arkham City - 30 hours on the PC GOTY addition and another hundred or so hours on the PS3. It remains to me the best rendition of Batman in a video game to date.

Final Fantasy 6-9/12 - Again they are all different games but for me these particular games all have felt very good. I put a lot of time into 7. Maybe more than just about any game but BoF3. 8 was a year? 9 was a year. 12 was a year. 6 I've only started recently but I've been having a great time.

EDIT: Smash Bros Melee was my entire high school life so that gets an honorable mention.

If I had to put them in order about the only thing I could say for sure is that BoF3 would be number 1 because it defined most of my childhood and helped spawn my desire to write. It's not an objectively good game but it made me happy and that's the only thing that matters I figure.

Friend of mine found out that I haven't played either of these and bugs me at least once each time we talk.

"Hey. Did you download Xenogears on the PS3 yet? You know its on there right? How about Planescape did you GOG that shit?"

Each time I say no and see this broken expression flash back at me.

Yes a single person made fun of it. They also said "ermagerhd" which suggests they weren't even being serious.

It must hurt to be so persecuted for having genuine things you like instead of all these posers lying to not get picked on.

I don't know anything about DA2 but the other 3 games they mentioned I've not hurt much negative criticism towards (AVP2 and Prototype I've played and were quite a lot of fun iirc).

Games are not defined solely by their gameplay. >you< think they are and that's your choice.

Abe's Odyssey handles like a bag of rotten bananas but its one of the best games I've ever played. Top 50 probably [which is still not bad given all the games most folks play in 20+ years].

You can't [correctly] take something entirely subjective and act like its objective.

Just because you don't like something doesn't mean people who do like it are wrong. You are acting like the same person you posted about a few posts up.

Try not taking a dump for a month and tell me how that works out for you.

Sometimes just expressing how you feel about things is refreshing. It's therapeutic.

Just because that isn't what you desire in this sort of thing doesn't mean that its wrong. It was >you< who decided to come into the thread in the first place. Nobody forced you.

I don't like Jersey Shore but I never told people to shut up because they did. It just wasn't my bag. Same with Call of Duty or League of Legends.

I appreciate the notion that others enjoy things I don't. I don't need everyone to live in my ideal world.

"Well you are telling me to change!?"

There are subtle differences that I'll let you figure out.

It's not so much the game being blasted that I'm bothered with. I'm fine with people who don't like the same games as I do. What made me quoted you both was that you both talk about how people only put certain games on their list because of them being artistic or it makes them look cool.

While I guess I can't say that's entirely false, as there are lots of games that are praised for being artistic, I do believe that people place those games on those lists because they genuinely like them.

Actually I think Shadow Of The Colossus is a really good, captivating, and atmospheric game. Unlike some games (cough*OcarinaOfTime*cough), it does actually deserve the praise it gets. I never said any of the games where bad. I agree that Valve makes high quality games (albeit not to my taste), and I enjoy many AAA games. It's far easier to peg me as a hater though so people assume...

My point wasn't that the games aren't deserving, just that these threads are rarely ever actual conversations and they're basically pointless. People come in, post their top 10's and then leave, often without reading a single post before them. Hardly anyone elaborates on why these games are their favourites or says anything that might lead into an actual conversation. No. They just dump their list and leave, often not even caring if people ever respond to it. It's quite sad really, threads like this are basically the forum equivalent of a toilet. People just dump arse and leave.

As for the hipster comment, I think I'm justified. Whether people like it or not, for every one person who genuinely likes Shadow Of The Colossus as their favourite game, there are two who just claim they do (some without even having played it), because it's the cool hipster game of choice. It's the go to game for arguing "video games are art", so all the pompous arrogant, "I like games that broaden the horizons" douches, (you know; the ones that think games like "The Path" are saying something profound), they all latch onto it as though it's the fucking messiah. Like I say, I do like the game... probably not in my top 10, but top 20 sure.
While I still don't necessarily agree with the hipster comment, I can kinda see where you're coming from when it comes to these threads. People do kinda just leave a list and don't elaborate. (I'm somewhat guilty of this.)

My list is going to be shamelessly Zelda fanboyish just as a disclaimer.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time(N64/3DS versions): I probably don't need to say why I love this game when you have a bunch of others say why they like it so much. For me everything works so well, even today, plus there is the re-make on 3DS so no one can say it hasn't aged well when it was brought into the current handheld generation.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess(Gamecube version): Considering it was made to be Zelda fan service and very similar to Ocarina of Time, how could I not love this game?

3. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask: One of the strangest and best Zelda games. It's deep on so many levels and I'm glad it has finally become more popular in recent years.

4. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker: Besides the bunch of Sailing, it does everything so well from art style to dungeons, to memorable characters, can't wait for the HD version.

5. Pokemon Black and White: (Black in particular because you get Reshiram as your legendary Dragon.) This game was well crafted from the Pokemon to themselves, to the environments to the music, and a great story with interesting characters.

6. The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword: It has its share of problems, however its strengths cover for them. I found the motion controls great(not perfect mind you) and some of the fetch quests were annoying. The dungeons however were some of the best in the series, music was excellent, and it had lots of content to keep a player occupied for a while.

7. Super Mario Galaxy: The best 3D platforming has to offer, the great visuals, soundtrack and gravity mechanics are second to none, the game still amazes me.

8. Halo 3: I love it purely for the campaign. The campaign may be painfully short, but it's so fun and re-playable. Looks great, plays well, excellent soundtrack, wraps up the original trilogy very well. Multiplayer was fun, but that was never important to me.

9. Metoid Prime: One of the best Metroid experiences on could have. It takes everything great about the series and puts it into 3D, similar to what Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time did for those franchises. The world is sculpted well, great enemies and environments, plus cool power-ups the franchise is known for.

10. Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Even though most people prefer Melee, I prefer Brawl for having more characters and content. I've put untold hours into this game, still so fun to play either with friends, my brother or even alone against computer players.

I warned you there would be too much Zelda, but I wouldn't have it any other way. :)

They aren't in particular order, because comparing very different games is difficult. And not a definite list.

1. Super Mario Bros 3
2. Eternal Darkness
3. Pokemon Gold
4. Pikmin
5. Ghost trick
6. Ace Attorney; Justice for all (or any of the trilogy, really)
7. Resident Evil 4
8. Metroid Prime
9. Zelda Windwaker
10. Tales of Symphonia

Honorary mentions; Super Smash Bros melee, Duke Nukem 3D, Super Mario 64, Zelda; Oracle of ages, Dragon age 2, Portal.

I should probably elaborate:
1. One of the first games I ever played, still holds up.
2. I love the plot, the bleakness of it, how you play as ordinary people caught up in stuff they don't understand, also the magic system and combat was awesome.
3. I love pokemon and have played them since Red. But it was Gold that perfected the formula.
4. The environments and monster-designs are interesting, the exploration and combat fun.
5. I love everything in this. The plot, the art, the humor, the mystery. Also I really like playing as a ghost.
6. Mostly the same as 5. Except obviously you're not a ghost. I like all of the original trilogy, but I think the last trial in JFA is enough to make it my favourite. Also I like Franziska as a prosecutor.
7. Great combat, fun nonsensical plot, I liked escort-mission aspects of it, and regenerators were creepier than anything in earlier RE-games.
8. Exploration of the environments was great.
9. I liked sailing. I was unsure whether to choose Windwaker or Oracle of Ages, but eventually went with Windwaker. Although I still really like Oracle of Ages. I just really love the time-travel mechanic in it.
10. A great JRPG with fun combat.

Kids that grew up with an N64 so blinded by nostalgia that more than half their top 10 will be N64 games. Obviously Ocarina Of Time gets #1 because of reasons... the others can go in any order really but you must include GoldenEye, Super Mario 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Majora's Mask and Banjo-Kazooie in there somewhere.
You know, this is a thread asking for our favourite games. So it's not really asking us to be objective, and nostalgia is totally okay.
I recently replayed Super Mario 64, and it didn't hold up the way I remember, but it still doesn't change that fact that it gets it's spot on lists like this because of how influental it was for me as a kid.

You want your own list to be taken seriously but introduce it by insulting other people's taste? Different people like different things you know. It means their tastes differ, not that their taste is "awful". C'mon now!

On topic:

These are purely a list of favourites and not a list of games that I think are "best" - that would look very different.

1. Civilization: Because I've probably put more time into it than into any other game. It hasn't aged badly (I don't feel that the newer version have really added much that wasn't there the first time around aside from visuals).

2. Conquests of the Longbow: Partially a nostalgia choice, but I genuinely loved it when I first played it and I still like the way the story worked and the fact that the ending had variety.

3. Uncharted Waters: Every 2-3 years I replay this, and every time I do I enjoy myself. I've bought all kinds of nautical-themed games since then and none of them has been nearly as fun.

4. Mass Effect Series: I laughed, I cried, I made robots fly through the air. I'm also one of the very few who enjoyed scanning planets in ME2.

5. Caesar III: My favourite city-building game - the only city-building game that I actually cared to buy after playing a demo.

6. Dr Mario: Still my favourite way to waste time when I'm sitting on the phone on hold (or in a really boring conference call).

7. Fallout Series: Primarily 2 and NV, but when I've had to travel to the DC metro area I've found myself constantly wanting to quote 3, so clearly that one's stuck with me as well.

8. Summoner: I played it 3 or 4 times over the course of one year - I don't know why, because it wasn't that good, but I clearly loved it. I have fond memories for the sequel as well.

9. Dragon Age 2: Was Origins a better game? Yes, it was. I don't care - I loved that this was a fantasy game that had a hero being buffeted about by fate rather than becoming the savior of the world. You can think I have crap taste all you want, but I just started my 8th playthrough and I'm not ashamed.

10. This slot could be any of a pile of casual/social games - some 4-player split screen shooter, some singing game, one of those Nintendo ones with the flying monkeys - anything that you can play with a bunch of people in the same room.

Hope this gets fixed soon.

Reminds me of games that don't work because of DRM.

I'm super nice and not using web editors and getting a broken chat box in return :(.

The list will change from time to time (it might even be different than the one I gave a few days ago). Anyways...

1). Xenoblade Chronicles: Just an excellent experience overall. I don't think I've ever been as connected to a game's world, characters, and stories as I was in Xenoblade. The beautiful environments made up for the Wii's graphical limitations, the soundtrack was arguably the best I've ever heard, and the general gameplay and (most of the) missions were things I wanted to do without ever feeling forced to do it. This is actually one of the few games I've played where I started wasting time in it just because I didn't want it to end. The only issue is that the game is over 100 hours, so finding the time to replay it can be hard. Still, the memories I have of this game are almost completely unmatched, except by The Sands of Time.

2). Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time: I love platforming and action games, and The Sands of Time trilogy did the best job of merging those two genres of any game series I've ever seen. What makes The Sands of Time stand out is it's simplicity yet ability to keep me guessing of what was coming in terms of puzzles and combat. Not to mention, it has the best story I've ever followed in a game, and shows just how perfectly to reflect romance in a video game in terms of both story and gameplay.

3). Tales of Vesperia: This was a surprise. I tried the demo but hated it, but I ended up seeing it in the game store and since there was nothing else interesting to buy, I decided to pick it up. It's probably the most beautiful game I've ever played. It's self-aware parodying of popular TV show and move tropes combined with its more serious and mature story was handled flawlessly, as was the humor and more serious moments in general. It's characters are also some of the best I've ever seen. If the game didn't feel like it was dragging itself out towards the end, then it might have made it even higher.

4). Fallout 3: I absolutely loved exploring The Capital Wasteland, which is saying a lot considering I normally don't like that kind of environment. Not to mention, this is probably the only Bethesda game that had a good enough cast of characters to keep me interested in them from beginning to end, as well as remembering them long after I finished the game.

5). The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Loved this fantasy world. It was absolutely beautiful, and there aren't many games where I've spent as much time just looking out over the lush landscapes as I did in this one. Everything about this world just made me want to explore it, no matter how many times I ended up going through generic dungeon #337.

6). Mass Effect 2: To me, this did the best job in the trilogy of merging excellent writing with good gameplay. Its story was the weakest, but its character completely unforgettable. Not to mention, the final attack on The Collector Base was one of the best ending levels in any game I've played.

7). Super Smash Bros. Melee: Along with being the best fighting game I've ever played, this game also has the fondest memories of any multiplayer game I've played. I recently saw this game on sale at a convention and might have even shed a tear for all the good times I had with friends and family with this game.

8). Dark Souls: Haven't completed it yet, but I feel this game has deserved its spot here already. It is rare, and I mean very rare, for a game to be this simultaneously fun and challenging, somehow balancing the two so neither is sacrificed for the other. It isn't flawless and can be horribly dejecting at times, but no matter how many times I take a mandatory break from the game, I'm always looking forward to my next attempt at it.

9). Super Mario Sunshine: I liked how they kept the open-ended "just have fun" feel of Super Mario 64 while giving a much needed refinement to the core mechanics of the game. I'm normally the type to just go through doing what needs to be done in a game, but Sunshine really got me away from that, having me create my own fun more often than following the game's own challenges. Oh yeah, and I absolutely loved the tropical setting.

10). Super Mario Galaxy: There was just something special about this game. It was an excellent experience that had a great sense of personality. It helps that the levels were designed so well, even if it could have been a bit more challenging.

Someone should make an account that does nothing but reply to "Top X Games" threads with a list and see how many posts he/she can get with nothing but video game titles and numbers.

1. Dark Souls
Countless hours of pure enjoyment. Huge replayability. I can't even count how many new characters I have started. So many possibilities when it comes to building a character. Cool weapons, items and magic. Very rewarding experience. Also fantastic world and level design ( Sen's Fortress <3)
2. Walking Dead
Most emotional experience of my gaming career. Story is beyond amazing. Well-made characters.
3. Journey
This one is hard. I don't even know why I like it so much, I just do. Hypnotizing experience.
4. To the Moon
Boring gameplay but the story <3
5. Fallout New Vegas
One of my most played games of all time. The atmosphere, dialogue and characters are awesome! Much more enjoyable than Fallout 3 IMO.
6. Bioshock Infinite
Relatively enjoyable gameplay, but the world and story are the best things here. I love Columbia as a setting.
7. Civilization V
One more turn...
8. Spec Ops: The Line
Honestly the gameplay is really average and boring but the story is something new. And they make fun of modern brown military shooters.
9. Heavy Rain
Again, the story. Also the interactivity, what you do actually matters and affects the outcome.
10. Minecraft
Just gotta have it here, something completely unique. I was addicted to this game for a long time.

As you can see I appreciate stories in games.
