Hi, I recently read an article on www.mises.org (Daily article) about videogame violence. For once, the writer was not baised in either direction. He made a very interesting analogy about violent people playing violent games.

Apprently increases access to pornography actually decreases sex crime as young males can their "relief" from using it as a fantasy aid rather than going out to commit acts of sexual crime.

In the same way violent videogames may actually give violent people their "fix" of voilence.

What do you think? Do you use violent videogames to vent anger? Do you think that violent people would commit crime regardless of video games?

Video games are a good way to vent anger. Since the 80s, violent crime in the US is down. Troubled people will always commit crimes though, whether they have video games or not.

Thread title is misspelt.

I think you'd have to be pretty special to think doing some thing in the street is okay because you've done it in a game... Sadly its happened though

In short no. Every person is not a murdering psychopath, even those who would want to be. Not every emo teenager who likes to call himself a sociopath because he can't find himself any friends is a James Earl Cash or a soldier of fortune. Playing a violent video games is no substitute for harming real people. And if you are having those urges you should seek help immediately not play a game. There is a difference, and for those of us who have actually seen or been in contact with those who have unfortunately passed on in a violent manner, it's very easy to distinguish games from real life.

In addition to that I have never really played a game just for the violence,I don't know anyone that has. Sure you get a kick out of it if its present, especially in a comical way. But all the gore ridden games I tend to play are also very story powerful games in my opinion.

Hell yes.

Counter Strik Source : Gungame pro mod.

There is no online shooter or mode more frantic and draining than that. I only need to play two or three rounds of it and whatever I was mad about has been lost forever in the twitch...

As for your second question, yes, violent people will still be violent regardless. There are very few cures for a person's nature.

I use games to relief stress sometimes yes. Slaughtering zombies in L4D is always a good one, and an extremely good sniping round in TF2 can bring me to an almost Zen-like status, completely forgetting any problem.

And it's quite obvious that people would still commit violent crimes regardless of videogames, it's not like violent crimes only came up when videogames did too. There will always be psychopaths, or otherwise said: humans will always be humans.

Videogames are a nice bit of stress relief at times.

I still think boxing gets my aggression out better though.
Its not like I'm going to walk down the street and attack people anyway.

They're a great way to vent. So many times, I've been angry and just went and chainsawed through a couple of locusts and calmed down. Not like I would hurt someone in real life, it's just that it's good to get that anger out, you know?

I'm an angry gamer. Usually get angry when something isn't going the way it's supposed to and I end up shouting "MOVEEE!!!!" at the TV.

If I'm already angry though a few rounds on Wii Boxing sorts it out for me.

I have a punching bag in my room and violent video games. That helps.

Prototype may not be that great of a game, but its perfect for venting anger.
