You're a Nerd

Video games are my passion: I'm working on an essay about the societal model in Final Fatnasy X and how it applies to human nature and society. I could go off forever about the quality of storytelling in Final Fantasy VII and Bioshock (and I often do).

I also play D&D on a regular basis: I finally found some friends at college that are willing to play, and a DM who's willing to lead (since this is my first campaign, I really didn't want to try DM yet). My character is a Gnome wizard, and I'm thinking about using a permanency spell to mak my character bigger so I can be a six-foot tall gnome. Because that would be pretty awesome.

Also, I have four Star Wars posters in my dorm room, and I could answer any Avatar: The Last Airbender questions you throw my way. I watch plenty of anime, and Clannad made me cry like no other. I listen to video game soundtracks and J-rock more often than any American band.

Yeah... I'm a nerd. There are nerdy things I'm not involved in, for sure, but considering the sheer amount and variety of my nerdy activities, I'd probably give myself a 9.5/10.

nerd is just a word, so is perfect and normal, we are what we are, no one should be put into a group when we are all human, and i know someone is going to call me out on this, but really, i dont care.

a few years ago there were few people at my school that played video games. And they were some of my closest friends (some still are). But then Call of duty 4 came out. yea...

But other than that i am interested in Warhammer 40k to an extent. love working with computers and would love to get a good game of Dungeons and Dragons going.

My school has many people whom you wouldn't expect playing DnD and warhammer. Many dont care about being geeks and generally dont bother us. save for a few others.

one of my friends seem to be a geek in denial. he got together a dnd game and abandoned it a few weeks later. He even kicked out one of his other friends from the game before i joined. Before that he go into game design and soon he abanodoned that too. Finally we got into airsoft (a less geeky activity) and after one single game he abandoned it. I wasted a good amount of money on it. And no i cant play it that well at my house.

Damn he pissed me off and still does.

I'm a nerd because I play so many games that I don't even watch TV shows or movies. I haven't seen a movie since August.

I work on a computer all day listening to various orchestral movie soundtracks. I also have a Harry Potter book in my bathroom.

I am a nerd because I notice every grammatical error, no matter how insignificant they may be, in everything I read.

I am a nerd because I have tried to /target something in real life.

I am a nerd because I play a Bard.

I am a nerd because when I perform while playing a bard, I blast Metallica for irony.

I am a nerd because every single reference or joke I make is from something obscure.

I am a nerd because my recorded game time tells me I have lost a significant amount of my life.

I am a nerd because I was doing coding at age 11.

I am a nerd because I prefer RPGs to FPS.

I'm more of a geek than a nerd.

I like comic books, video games and spend time on the internet, and while I'm clever, it's not like I'm able to programme(yes, I'm English) a computer or piece of software.
This sums me up pretty well. I've always preferred the term 'geek' to 'nerd'. I couldn't write a computer programme to save my life...

I'm a nerd because I have an insane attention to detail on things I really shouldn't. I know, for example, the full name of the main character of Assassin's Creed II (Ezio Auditore di Firenze) and the pronunciation and meaning. I haven't even played it yet.

I'm a nerd because gaming is my main hobby. This one's society's fault. Damn you, sitcoms and your overreliance on stereotypes, damn you Big Bang Theory! (Halo doesn't have any freakin' medpacks!)

Mostly gaming. Although, like some other people on this thread, "geek" is more appropriate.

Let's see.
I have over 50 days /played on my warrior in WoW, I greatly enjoy the FF series.

I play Magic: the Gathering and World of Darkness (Vampire).

I have a good, and detailed plan for the Zombie apocalypse, although the revised "fast Zombie" plan is still in alpha.
I am also working on a plan for "strange virus kills off 97,5% of the worlds population" apocalypse, and it involves chain mail and a healthy dose of steam punk.

I listen to phrog801 a.k.a. Nyhm on youtube far more than any other artists.

Also, I read books. And I am still shocked by the amount of people that don't.

I have read all of the Resident Evil books (yes, the crappy ones) and enjoyed them,

Maybe the fact that I use much of my free time to play games or investigate about them?

Maybe because I am saving all my money for gaming stations or hardware for my computer?

Or maybe because I am posting here instead of much needed sleeping...
I don't think that being a nerd is a negative thing though.
There's more to the list than that, but I really don't believe in labels.

Yep I think I might just be nerdy...
You sir may be a god of the tek nerdy factions.

I think what we need to get at is their are allot of ways to embrace your nerd. As the gentalman above is most certainly a tek nerd. I would be a tabletop nerd. I love D&D I have played but no longer maintain a WH40k army (TAU) and I alos devour fantasy setting books. At the moment anything writen by Glen Cook is outstanding.

I also dable in PC/Scifi nerdery.

Just too many ways to be nerdy I think its all in what nerdy means to you.

Pfft I still maintain an army of Nids, Orkz and Marines. Your young'uns are just fluff comparatively ;)

Considering this thread has been necromanced, I should add and enhance my previous answers:

*I've finished my last 4 certifications in 25 minutes per each 3.5 hour exam.
*Despite not being qualified, every security tech I know speaks to me when they get stuck.
*I am the youngest person in my company by 24 years, including that two of the techs have 35 years between them, but I still know the answers before them.
*I can recall the stat lines for every monster in the original monster manual.
*I sometimes find myself counting unique letters in sentences looking for 5's "the cat" has 5 letters in it: theca
*I kernel program
*I've written my own table top gaming system
*I've enhanced someone else's table top gaming system - and all my friends now play my variant.

Some reasons why I am not a nerd:

*I didn't sign up this year and now have over 5,000 posts
*I am getting engaged soon, and married later
*My entire world does not revolve around gaming, computers or something else (I go home and watch TV, not sit on the internet all night... now)

Despite my "not-a-nerd" points, I think I still count :)

If I *have* to call myself a nerd, let me make a list of reasons.

1) I write fantasy genre fiction.
2) I do a lot of gaming, and dedicate myself to being able to play all genres as well as possible.
3) I love anime.
4) I'm very gradually learning Japanese. No real dedication yet (can't read the pure script), but the actual pronunciation is getting better.
5) I'm part of fan communities, though they are more "dedicated" than rabid type communities.
6) I am far too unique to fit into any one group. Thus, in school though not university, I was a little outcast. Did have other "nerdy" friends, though.
7) I have a brain which actually has some level of electric current in it (i.e. I have some education under my belt, which I actually participated in). As opposed to those who don't, who would be incapable of true nerdiness.
8) I adore debating. Especially on the Internet.
9) I consume a LOT of news media, just for the sake of learning the flow of current events and how to predict other events as accurately as possible.
10) I liked Grim Fandango a bit. Yes, it deserves to be a reason.

I think nerd is what other people call you when they don't like the things you like. Perhaps I'm old fashioned. I mean, I know, technically, I'm probably a nerd, because I like science fiction, computers, games, etc. etc. etc. ... but I absolutely hate the word.
Maybe you are old fashioned, but I agree with you. The way the term is used with pride these days is just separating us more from the rest of humanity, and that's one thing the social group doesn't need. Except for the Ultra Hardcore, who think they're too good to be human and must sit in a dungeon-like bedroom in the dark all day editing TV Tropes entries, and hate human interaction.

I dream of being the badass of the zombie apocalypse. Ergo, I am a nerd, since I can't be the badass of the mess that is the world as we know it.

Like I said before you have a platinum membership to the Nerd Country Club.

I just couldent get that hard into the 40k Though (My army wasnt worth that much point wise.) I did love the TAU.
Though I will stick with you on the custom D20 system. Massive room for improvement. Not to metion building my own world Using snips of the dragon star source material. (Leaning more the firefly stlye of universe.) I dont doubt that, that one has been done the hell out of but you cant deny that it is epic universe.

I know I am a nerd because I spot out and correct people's grammar yet I do not use it well myself. (If there is a mistake in that sentence it was actually an accident.)

I am a nerd because when normal people talk about Halo, Call of Duty, South Park, Chick Norris I feel embarrassed for liking something noobs such as the idiots around me like and talk about. It makes me ashamed to be a gamer when I hear 11 year olds on my bus talk about their Halo stories.

I am a nerd because I have read the Terms of Use and stuff and know that most warranties don't actually do anything for the consumer. If one were to read down several numbers they would see that if for example a computer malfunctions, the company is not responsible for the majority of defects or faults..

I am a nerd because I understand all the numbers for system specs, including GPU clock speeeds, I know what GDDR5 stands for and actually means and why computers may run slow even if they have great specs.

I am a nerd because I actually noticed and got mad about SciFi changing their logo and name to SyFy. Seriously the fuuck why would they do that???

I am a nerd because I analyzed the post Hey Joe wrote and realized that he is likely an overly selfconsious douche who is trying to act like less of a nerd than he really sounds and likely acts, and I am writing about it.
