Right, I have to know, it's driving me nuts.

How the fuck do you block, prevent or counter the spinning piledriver and spinning throw?

I think I'm probably not the only one who would like to know...

Um, unless you get them first with a projectile, your pretty much screwed. Those count as special throws, so you cant block or break those.

Absolutely right, however you can get a technical by using the throw buttons before their's connects. That's the only way that I'm aware of.

when close you need to learn to use your "light" attacks, it buffers the opponent and stops them doing specials, such as throws. If against AI chances are they cheat and dont have to do the entire movement with the pad to pull off the move.

That's exactly the problem. They do the move in a fraction of the time it would take a human to spin a 360 degree circle on thier pad or stick

Trying for a technical never seems to work for me.

I've not played Street Fighter 4, but its a good rule to have, remember to use light attacks more often do to the speed of which you can pull off a "light" punch to put your oppenent in a stunned state so you can either counter their move, or buffer their animation to pull off a higher damage move.

When against the AI, such as Mortal Kombat AI, we should just close our eyes and pray.

Does Street Fighter 4 have a heirachy of moves?, such as two fireballs cancel each other out?, or Ken's dragon punch winning over Ruy's dragon punch?.

Must try that. It plays very similar to sf2 so you could be right even though you haven't played it.

EX Moves will always win against regular moves, However if they both use the standard special move, fireballs Cancel, and the dragon punch comes down to timing

Its not SF2 i learnt it from, I used to use the hard buttons all the time on that game, after playing for 20 years I slowly learnt to use the light attacks due to their speed but having the same animation outcome upon connection

Its an excellent tactic to use if you play as Leon Rafale in Virtua Fighter and Ivy in Soul Calibur, since their big impressive moves take ages to pull off. I know it also works on the capcom VS series of games.

Also i've watched alot of videos of Daigo playing SF4, and he buffers alot before he pulls off specials, if you dont know who Daigo is i'll send you a link to what he does, he's considered the best ever street fighter player.

I'm a newbie to fighting games so I'm definately gonna try the light attacks thing and see if it works. Could explain how button mashers win lots of games too... :D

Not if you're playing against the AI. Since the Tornado Throw/Spinning Piledriver moves are both special throws, technicals DO NOT WORK against them. Projectiles do not work because the AI WILL jump over every single one. Plus you will never see them try the grab and miss at range...they only do it when they're at point-blank range. I've actually seen my moves interrupted by their throws, which is bullshit because I can never ever ever grab while they are attacking.

So basically, just spam jumping high kick + sweep, then retreat and repeat.

As a general strategy, you want to use moves that keep Zangief off of you. Period. That means projectiles, pokes, etc. Eventhubs.com has some great SFIV tips. Here's a morsel of SF trivia:

360, SPD, Screw-pile driver, Spinning pile driver: To roll the joystick hitting 7 points on it. It's a popular misconception that you have to go all the way around to successfully pull off a 360, when in reality you only have to hit 7 points.

No problem. Poke is just a general term for a fairly safe move with good range. It's character-specific as to which moves poke well, but check the kick moves first. In Super Turbo, Vega has a good poke game because of the hyper-extended hitbox associated with his claw. Guile's sabat kick (forward + mid-Kick) or crouching high-Kick are also examples.

I get ya. I use Sakura and her hard kick seems to be a good 'poke'. Zangief can still manage to get through it though, maybe its my timing

off-topic to the gief grabs but to those who'd like to get to grips with Abel more i reccomend becoming best friends with his elbow uppercut (crouch+strong punch) as its invaluble to pulling off some nice chains following it.

If you're quick enough you can experiment with different combinations of his heel kick & air grab aswell as flipping a quick weak kick roll and catching them with a 2nd elbow juggle :)
