Yeah, can't say I see the upside of PUBG, of the 3 battle royales I'm familiar with (not counting the fact hat the basic mode has been a mod staple since Unreal 2004 in various games I've played).

They all have the general foible of your success is more RNG then anything. No gun (or conversely, the short range gun vs the long range one/scopes = You're ****ed. And the way to win is essentially not to do anything, and avoid any interaction ever in this multiplayer game (as opposed to similar setups in some survival games, where there's at least a potential of some on the fly negotiation)

So many sadsacks commenting here who've clearly never played it, for the flimsiest of excuses. Games too long? 30 mins maximum. Shorter than your average Battlefield round and a lot faster loading. God-Awful game? Big words for someone who confesses to having 'no idea' what it is. The way to win is essentially not to do anything? Not possible. The whole point of the circle is to keep everyone on the move towards each other- even campers cannot stay put for long. Unimaginative assets? Haha holy cow dude get that stick out of your arse.

It's in a league of its own. You can start fast and furious and treat it like an arena shooter, which is fine. You can grab a car straight away and race off to a safe area to loot. That's also fine. You can drop in a remote spot and slowly build up your arsenal and stalk other players from the fringes, and that works too. It has quiet moments of methodical searching and collecting medical supplies punctuated by sudden, vicious confrontations, with absolutely zero of that indication UI bullcrap that riddles all the AAA multiplayer shooters these days. You learn something about how to stay alive better from every death you have. If you headshot someone on the other side of a meadow- do it right and they won't even know what hit them. Stealth, quick reflexes, map reading and positioning strategy... it's all here.

And that's just solo play. Try it with 3 friends in a squad and you have basically the greatest co-op shooter of all time. Play it like a professional SWAT team or hoon around the countryside loaded up in a minivan, it's up to you. Each story that unfolds as you play is different, and completely organic. This game tells a better story than actual scripted co-op games. Left 4 Dead doesn't hold a candle to this.

And the first time you make it down to the top ten... when 90 others have perished out there... knowing the ones left are heavily armed and armoured and hiding somewhere out there within a circle that has by now shrunk to the size of barely a carpark... then you will feel adrenaline the likes of which you haven't felt since the first time you dropped into an Unreal Tournament match.

Then you will understand why people play it. 3 million at any one time, in fact.

I'm giving Lufia Erim the benefit of the doubt here and assuming they're talking about the salty haters in here, who are visibly butthurt about a gaming experience they haven't even bothered to try, as opposed to me happily singing the praises of a genuinely exhilarating game, which is the opposite of butthurt. Nobody would be stupid enough to get the two mixed up that badly.

Nice lens flare meme by the way, well done. I'll bet you were really popular with that one back in 2009...

PUBG is actually pretty interesting to study as a game because it presents some difficult problems that are inherent in a ton of FPS games. Just for starters, Snipers in games are either underpowered or OP'd. There never seems to be any true middle ground.
I've found the best solution is to simply buff all the non-sniper rifles up to close to the same level of lethality and make the stages big enough for the scopes to be relevant.
Insurgency does a pretty good job at keeping them balanced because anyone with a basic assault rifle can generally land 1-2 hit kills at decently long ranges, so the sniper weapons' main benefit is their accuracy at long range instead of inordinate levels of damage output: So if they fuck up the first couple of shots and stick around then a sniper is liable to get their head blown off by the smattering of return fire.

Calling out someone for slagging off something they've never tried, then providing a proper reasoning as to why that thing they've never tried is actually good, is being butthurt now? I must be getting too old for this intermanet thing you kids are all into.

Also I didn't quite catch your reasoning for joining this debate. At all. Care to elaborate?

If the maps are too wide open, it's a sniper's paradise as long as they can remain long-range. If a sniper rifle is equal in power to the other weapons in the game, it's still better than the other weapons because it has the benefit of being able to deliver nasty damage at any range.

The main deciding factor is the difference between maps being large and open. So long as there's plenty of obstructions and cover, and other means of obstructing sight lines like smoke grenades then it doesn't become a constant issue. And if the sniper rifle's capable of being effective at "any range" then the devs have fucked up the design.

Going back to the Insurgency example: the game's hipfire is really unreliable and scoping in with anything magnified takes way too long (not to mention the magnification working against you). So a sniper that's gotten into a close range fight is best off pulling their handgun and praying not to get shredded, if simply running away isn't an option.

Sounds about right (if "shtick" means not to be taken very seriously). He makes some very valid points. However, he puts humour first, and the best way to do that is to state negatives. He had a lot of bad things to say about Skyrim, for example, but I (and many) enjoyed it.

Incompetent netcode & hack monitoring, coupled with the unwillingness to block regions that embrace cheating as a business model for loot box incentivization. Pretty Useless Get Better.
