the first step for Mary Sue is an inserted character in an established continuity. No matter how super great a character is and how much everyone loves them for no reason, they are not a Mary Sue if it's their own series. It's just a shitty character and I am sure there is a term for that on TV Tropes, but I got plan for the rest of this year, so I can't go there to check.
As a fan of the PS2 era, the series was never GREAT at the story thing. RC1 is where ratchet and clank got most of their character development, with Ratchet being a straight up dick for portions of the game. Sequels weirdly spent way more time on villains.
Backwards compatability has been a HUGE sticking point for me this gen. Im lucky enough to NOT NEED to sell my old consoles to afford the new ones. In fact, ive been playing catch up with all the smaller games from last gen that past me by (just got velvet assassin). But its complete bullshit that these machines can't handle their older counterparts.

Backwards compatability is the biggest problem with the new consoles, but I think that problem will diminish with time. More and more re-releases of last-gen games are coming out, which admittedly doesn't solve the problem for people who already have them and want to play them on their new system. It does at least ensure they won't be totally erased.
On that note, didn't the Ratchet & Clank HD trilogy come out on PS3 and Vita around the same time the PS4 was released? That was incredibly poorly timed.

This's been a curious episode for me, as it is the first time Yahtzee reviews a game in a franchise I genuinly love and has major nostalgia for. Even more so when I can't find anything to argue about. If anything, there's a few things I wish he'd bring his iconic rants on, the way the villians are handled across the board spring to mind... In any case, as far as I'm concerned this reboot is vastly better gameplay-wise then the original, captures the mood of the story of the other ones well enough, but it's far from as good as Going Commando or Up your Arsenal. Overall, perfect summary.
Yeah, as someone who has played (almost) all previous Ratchet and Clank games, this game is really about on par with the first one, especially given it's a remake (but not really?) of the first one.
Thing is, they've made better games since the first one. Pretty much the only thing they slapped in that was new were the cards (pointless) and the raritanium upgrade board for each weapon, which while nice, is pretty much it.
I really really really hope that their next game is not simply a remake of the second game Going Commando. Make something new, please.

Yep... The movie's fine[footnote]I loved it! Take that, movie reviewers and critics I follow![/footnote]... The game's okay[footnote]Still based on the movie, though...[/footnote]... But, the method behind them all is more of a fucking mess than not re-releasing all of the PS2 Ratchet & Clank games to the PS3 for canon-based purposes in one package...
Other than that, apparently, this review also doubles as "spoilers" for the movie... which most people would know anyway if they played the first two-and-a-half games!

This video seemed rather shorter than usual. Though I am supposedly coming off from an extended period of very strong pain medication, which may explain such a perception. Things feel weird, cold and sterile.
Hang on, if you are a newcomer to the series, why do you assume the first installment better than the reboot? Even if you took someone else's opinion, it still means you cannot speak for yourself. Surprised nary a mention of the mostly eye-rolling humour within the game, but it does have an endearing charm to it, like a determined child comedian; you know it's their shtick and they mean well, but they can barely tease a natural smile no matter what they try to come up with.

The whole entire first game was about Ratchet and Clank learning to not hate each other, and they just skip that entirely for the reboot?
Like, in the original, Ratchet just wants to get off his boring planet, and needs a robot to pilot his ship because that's what the blueprints say. So he sticks with Clank mostly just because otherwise his ass is stranded wherever they happen to land. And finally, after some stuff happens, Ratchet just wants to abandon the "Save the galaxy from the asshole corporation" mission, only for Clank to have to BLACKMAIL him into sticking along stating abovementioned "You need me with you or you'll be stranded", forcing Ratchet to slowly warm up to being an actual good guy and not just a daredevil who does stuff for fun.
It was actually pretty good as a character arc, and they just skip all that and jump straight to "They are best buds for no reason, go go go"? ...*sigh*
...Couldn't they just make an HD remake collection of the first 3 games, then make the rest of the PS3 games digital downloads on the PS4? Wouldn't that have been cheaper?

I never played the games, as I never had a PS2 or PS3, but it was a series I was interested in. Safe to say I'm not rushing out to buy a PS4 for just this game.

Yeah, everything I've heard about this game says it misses a lot of the beats of the first one that made the eponymous duo relatable. And from what I've seen it tries to do too much to hark back to the old games instead of being its own thing. Did we really need Drek and Quark and Nefarious as villains? Have you people learned nothing from the Spider-Man films, stick to one or at max two villains!
Yet Nintendo is still the best when it comes to backwards compatibility. The XONE needed a couple of updates to get a decent back catalogue. When the Wii U came out, you could almost put any old Wii game in the console with rarely a fuss in sight. That is how you do backwards compatibility.Michael Prymula said:

I have no idea why we haven't been getting the guitar solo in the ending from the beginning. It's like some sort of cruel joke that we listen to intro and outro every week without the best part.
