It's impressive that Yatzhee can do a review like this even after loving Saints Row 2 to death. It's like an ultra anti-fanboy move

I knew he wasn't going to like a majority of the game, especially with the lack of customization that makes no sense since they could have copy-pasted the customization from SR2 and then added the other things they wanted to add.

Three steps forward, one step back. Still a win regardless.
Considering it's obvious that Yahtzee is saying that SR2 is still better, and him saying in effect that SR3 is fun but not a lasting proper fun, fun with a giant *, I would see this as two steps back and a grudgingly one step forward.

If I was the developer watching this, and actually was using my brain, I would realize where I went wrong and look back at SR2 and what made it great and what should have been carried over but wasn't, and then make the fourth one more like SR2.

Yes, the storyline made next to no sense and was a major let down, but SR isnt about storyline all that much really. Spending too much time bitching about it would be like looking at a portrait and bitching about the backdrop the photographer used.

The biggest disappoint is the cutting back of the level of customization available for your character. I have a feeling most of the customization is still there with regards to clothing - its just being crushed under the oppressive boot of paid DLC.

Only other let down the lack of variety and amount of sandbox fapping about to be had. I could spend weeks doing nothing in SR2, but in this one it seemed very much like if I wasnt working on completing something, it got old quick. Still worth a play and kills two weeks easy.

Yahtzee, I respect you as a journalist and a critic, (your actually the guy who got me into the biz) but I'm still buying this. Why? Because I've played waaaaaay too much counter strike lately, and I need something with a singularity of fun and zaniness to balance that out.

That's pretty much what I feared from SR3. The mix for SR2 was just right, GTA as it was supposed to be; straight story with a healthy dose of madness. SR3 seems too much of a crazy-fest to me.

That's becoming a real problem with the games industry, isn't it? I'm fine with DLC as a whole, it's a good concept and additional campaigns and stories that won't make or break the game are good ideas (Al-la Fallout 3/NV), but ones where the content seems like it was necessary and should have been on the original game to begin with, especially ones that give you the feeling that they planned to put it on the game then purposefully removed it.
Not to mention the game's significantly shorter with less content all around.

The fact that they have 40 weeks of DLC announced is indicative of the problem, too. Instead of keeping us playing with a lot of shit, they plan to make us pay to squeeze longevity out of a shallower game.

Let me be clear: I LIKE Saints Row the Third. I've spent a total of 60 hours across two saves, so I can't bash the game entirely, but it's a wholly shallow experience compared to the last game.

It's less fun, it's less content, it's less...Well, almost everything. Fewer choices, less story, etc. And that doesn't make me want to buy the DLC, it makes me want to put down the game when I'm bored.

SR2, I wanted DLC. I wanted more, more, MORE! And they didn't give us much. Then they gave us a new game, but severely crippled it, and decided "hey, we'll give you more if you pay us..."

Season pass for added content is 20 bucks. That's three mission packs, which will have to be pretty big to get us up to the same level of content as the last game, at a 20 dollar price increase. Not to mention, it doesn't cover all the DLC: Night Blade is a bonus pack in the season pass, but the cheats pack and Shark-o-Matic are two examples of DLC not included.

THQ talked about engaging the player. They don't want to engage us. that's what 2 did. The Third instead offers a way for us to keep paying.

I'm not sure how "I respect you" would in any way need to be contrary to "I'm getting it."

Also, is it just me or has Yahtzee given three positive reviews practically in a row?
There have been a lot of amazing games lately. It's like even Yahtzee has to realize that.

Posting just to say - never played the second game on account of the horrible, horrible PC port, got this one and enjoyed it immensely.

I guess I should count myself grateful that I never played the second game to have my experience colored by it? Heh.

Hah, at the end where he was summarizing that the game has become a sold-out parody of it's former self I was expecting him to draw an introspective parallel with himself and this show.

Alas, I was disappointed.
I have to suspect, given the quality of the writing in SR:TT, that they actually are excruciatingly aware of their having sold out. And that they're doing the best they can to have fun with the boundaries they have.

Yahtzee on the other hand seems like he's having less fun, but I'm not sure it's due to having sold out. I think he's just bored. In particular, I can only imagine that shooter season 2011 is as depressing as it sounds for a reviewer who does not seem to really enjoy brown FPS games in the first place.

Edit: Besides, what does it mean for Yahtzee to sell out? Unless, as I can only hope, he was lying about enjoying Skyrim he's probably still giving honest reviews and pointing out what he perceives as the real flaws in games. At worst, he just doesn't get to pick all the games he reviews anymore. Which is just part of having a job.

So the standard method of navigating Steelport is lifted verbatim from my interpretation of Panua's national transit grid? Only minus the grapple hook and infinity parachutes. And Antonio Banderas expy of a protagonist.

I'll stick to Just Cause 2 for sandbox mayhem then...

Although I got a few chuckles in this vid,I can personally say that I do not agree with you Mr.Croshaw.

The devs have taken out quite a lot of "fun" activities from SR2 which could of been implemented in the third installment, but I enjoyed the game nonetheless, even with it's cheesy storyline.

I got the game pretty early... but I just had it in the bookshelf, because it looked neat next to Irvine Welsh's PORNO... and SKYRIM sucked me dry of spare playing time.

When I finally got around to play it, I felt an urge to not do so on the monitor, but the TV, and do things wirelessly, so we could all have some fun watching Saint's Row the Third on the biggest screen in the household. Needless to say, hilarity ensued. It's just way over the top. Take GTA (IV, if you will), spice it up with CRANK (the first one, preferrably) and shake. Voila.

We did about three missions before we just went for the cheats, customized the poor player character in more ways than we ever managed in many years of handling Barbies and Masters of the Universe. Yes, in this one particular game I actually like player customization. It's so messed up and insane it should be used by therapists, and it should be paid for by health insurance companies.

I know by now that I feel just about no urge at all to ever finish Saints Row the Third. I just boot it up, go insane and then feel a strange comfort in having a decent, normal life most of the time. Probably that's the kick some people get out of shooting up Heroin or smoking crack cocaine, without the health hazards.

FYI, the correct word for "person who identifies as something other than man or woman" is genderqueer, not transsexual. Transsexuals generally live and identify strictly as men/male or women/female... just opposite whatever they were born as.

Not necessarily, sorry.
Care to expand on that?

This made me realize that I must purchase Saints Row 2 over the oh-so-distant summer. Don't know why I haven't done so yet, actually. Always assumed it was some kind of gangsta-simulator whenever I saw the box-art, I guess.

Don't judge a book and all of that..

Main thing that annoys me is the fact they took side missions from SR2 and forced them in as story missions.

The game is still loads of fun but there's a lot of "buts" behind it.

Also note those who have the PS3 version can use their online pass to download SR2 free.

And it's not like the assholes at ubisoft who make you download 7GB and you still need the disc to play AC1.

I've noticed a lot of people have missed the bit where he begrudgingly admitted it was fun. I'm mixed about the game, I love some of the new stuff, miss the old stuff. But still being able to fly my hoverbike to the zombie infested island land on a grain silo and snipe zombies with a .50cal is pretty fun.

I think the next Saints needs to be more audacious rather than wacky. Like the Saints invade a South American country to set up their own nation. Seeing Saints branded Tanks rolling into a massive battle would be awesoome.

It seems developers these days don't have the slightest clue how a sequel is supposed to work. Like isn't a sequel supposed to improve on the previous one not detract from it?
