I think Jim Sterling nailed the Sonic problem - they just change it up too much, and can't settle down on anything that works long enough to polish it.

Sonic Boom!
Sonic Boom!
Sonic Boom!
Savin' Sega from disaster!

Yes. At long last has this game shat it's way into ZP. I just can't contain my glee. I almost feel that Yahtzee could've made a thirty minute long video explaining why it's shit!

Anyway, to the surprise of absolutely fucking no-one, it's bad. Bad, bad, bad, bad and you shouldn't play it, is my take. I was actually suprised that freeing the villain was on the first quarter of the game rather than in the middle.

I suppose Yahtzee has a new Worst GOTY contender for his end of the year list. Which would go something like:

1) Sonic Boom
2) The Evil Within
3) Thief
4) Lightning Returns
5) Hyrule Warriors

Why yes, I do have that Sonic CD song stuck in my head since you brought it up... But, jokes on you, I LOVE that song and am willing to play the entire soundtrack to Sonic R afterwards...

Other than that, "You bought me" is probably the best quip Sonic Boom could ever say to anyone who bought the game because it has "Sanic and Friends" on the box cover...

I wouldn't say that the influx of broken and bad Sonic games of today are retroactively ruining the old games. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is still as good as it was back in '94.

Yeah...that should have been a forgettable cheap shot, but I still laughed at it.

As a lifelong fan of Sonic the Hedgehog, one of the biggest crimes of Sonic Boom to me is that it's forever tarnished said fantastic opening song from Sonic CD.

But you should never say nobody would defend something; there are apparently some people out there who actually defend even Sonic '06.

Anyone else think that Yahtzee comparing those games to elderly patients lining up to die, made it seem like he was trying too hard to be edgy? He does comparisons like that a lot and it seems to be wearing thin. The games aren't even terrible or anything.

I disagree on Hyrule Warriors. Yahtzee didn't exactly say it was bad/horrible, just that it was boring to him and the plot was nonsensical(to him, at least.).

I say Risen 3, Sacred 3, Advanced Warfare, Amazing Spider-Man 2, Watch_Dogs or Destiny fit better on the list than Hyrule Warriors does. Then again, that can just be my inner Nintendo fan talking........

The thing that really bothers me about this game is that Sega will probably use this game as an example to claim that Americans can't handle Sonic games and prevent Team Headcanon from getting any creative control, despite them being the only ones who have made good Sonic games lately.

I remember when I got the Sega CD for my birthday and I was probably the only kid in a 100km radius that had it and I played Sonic CD. The intro and outro blew me away.

As for Sonic 06, I'm a firm believer that Sega should just have an online contest of some sort for modders and programmers teams and the winning team would be given Sonic 06's source code to fix as they see fit and re-publish for free a year or 2 down the road.

This is what he called Hyrule Warriors:

"Blatant marketing exercize"
"It's Dynasty Warriors with Zelda in it"
"Plot goes through the usual motions"
"I enjoyed the story mode because it kept making me laugh"
"Standard" and "Hackneyed"
"I found the gameplay rather dull"
"There's never any sense that the training wheels are coming off"
"Switching between weapons is incredibly awkward"
"There's got to be a better use for a touchscreen controller in a battlefield simulator"
"The [Zelda] games are interchangeable"
"The game climaxes before the end and then walks awkwardly for five more missions"
"The game is basically a bland reminder that the franchise exists until the next proper game comes out"

Not saying the games you mentioned are better or worse or don't have just as many negative quips to them. But Yahtzee didn't find Hyrule Warriors "just boring".

Then again, that can just be my inner Nintendo fan talking........
That depends. Would you try to defend Sonic Boom, another Nintendo game?

Just because it is exclusive to a Nintendo platform does not make it a Nintendo game just as Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is no more a Sony game despite being a PSP exclusive. This is a Sega game and a Sega game alone

"Taking it out on something that no one with even a passing interest in reality will defend" is actually a fitting end for a year of reviews. It's like setting a gravestone for someone an angry mob buried alive. It even follows a trend of Wii U game reviews ending Zero Punctuation years.

In 2012, Yahtzee greeted the new console with ZombiU, hoping for improvement after an adequate launch.
In 2013, he ran up to Super Mario 3D World and punched it in the face as it was making a speech like Martin Luther King's about ushering in a new age of traditionally fun 3D Nintendo games and adopted franchises.
And now he addresses the kind of crap the poor console got stuck with like screaming children on its ankles.

Goodness, I wanted to love Thief so much.

I am so sad that it sucked so badly. "Garret" could only climb certain things and follow specific paths. I would nearly bump it up a few spots, but I guess I am no Yahtzee.

A Sega game you can exclusively play on the Wii U is also called a Wii U exclusive.
