Er, emulated copies of those games are available. On steam at least.

Also, Yahtzee doesn't speak for the internet. This sonic game has actually garnered quite a bit of praise. A 79 on metacritic is pretty good (http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/sonic-generations). And a bug won't let me see the user score, but the balance of reviews seems pretty high too. Certainly not something that could be said to have incited a lot of hatred anyway.

Edit: and yes, that was Bruce Forsyth. No idea why though, guess he just has an awesome face.
Oh! I had no idea they were on Steam. That's a good thing. And honestly, I was only reacting to his video, not to the internet as a whole, so I hadn't looked at the reviews. My apologies. If indeed Sonic Team has made a non-horrible Sonic game, good on them!

And also, Bruce Forsyth is just plain awesome. Enough so that even this Yank knows who he is.

Sonic The Hedgehog CD, was the best one. Now sonic is like an old friend that I think of but don't talk to. Sega should have done a nintendo and just released the same game year after year with the same basic story but a slight twist. It's still wouldn't be as bad as some of the more recent games.

AS a Sonic fan I was initially thrilled when i heard about Generations but after my purchase numerous nits arise for the pickins so to speak. My biggest question why they skipped over all the awesome levels in Sonic 3..a fresh HD take on the Ice Cavern??!! its begging for it..hell I'M BEGGING FOR IT!

Perhaps then we would get some pretty sweet levels without all of Sonics obnoxious friends (except for Tails, knuckles and, Shadow of course)But if that were the case do you think Sega would have faired better when they took Sonic 3D?

Yeah, you're not the first one the notice the Sonic Cycle, Yahtzee, get with the times.

Also, I have to agree with Yahtzee on Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, especially considering that if you managed to follow it's conveluted plot, you'll know that the game basically wrote itself out of existence (a sort of "time reset button", if you will), in which Blaze the Cat gets killed then revived and SOMEHOW remembers all of that in Sonic Generations! GAH!

I really like this game, sure, it lost a little of it's charm when I got past the Mega Drive stages, but it's still a step in the right direction.
Wow I'm amazed at all the escapists who actually praise Sonic Generations.
Usually I'm stuck sifting through the cynical bile that is the result of SEGA constantly stagnating their franchise 80% of the time.

I lost my shit playing this game.
It improved on the Sonic Unleashed mechanics where you actually have time to dodge and see what's coming at you!
The boss fights were phenominal, cept for the last one where the mechanics kinda go into wacky fuck all kinds of steering.

Still loved this game and when I saw a boss fight of Silver, Metal Sonic and Shadow I had to change my pants (joking)

Funniest ZP in a while. Between random T-Rex, old Yatzhee, and Sega ejaculating blood when faced with Sonic 2006, funny all round.

Ugh, Yahtzee, I wanted you to stay far the hell away from this game.

Though I will agree that he has 2 pretty decent points. The jump button for the classic scheme is slow, which is wierd, cuz it seems to be more responsive for modern. I haven't the slightest clue where the delay stems from. Also, everyone I've spoken to pretty much felt the same way about the final boss. Weak, very uninstructed (what the hell do I DO??), you don't take damage and the rings you're supposed to be collecting whiz by you because the background is the same. Damn. Color as the rings are. What?!

Other than those, as has been stated plenty of times in the thread, it's a pretty good game. Shows some pretty genuine effort from Sonic Team who have been in a state of relative stagnancy until just a little over a year ago.

Riiiight, you thought that Sonic Colors was good.

And that, of course, is exactly why you refused to review it with anything other than a 4-sentence paragraph about "tortured cutscene bullshit".

And I wouldn't have expected what is basically a Sonic Cycle joke in this day and age. How very... topical?

You know, a celebration of classic Sonic games being good would probably be handled much better by just going back and playing the old games instead of this. A quickie release of emulated copies of 1,2,3,and S&K would probably do better and incite a lot less hatred. But that would probably require Sonic Team to think, wouldn't it?

Also, was that Sir Bruce Forsyth's face in that video?
They Already released the old sonic games about a thousand times in about almost every collection piece on every device save for PC so. Give them that credit yes?

... Oh well for my part I was glad to see Charmy again.

But then again I was introduced to Charmy as part of the Chaotix Crew, and then through the Fleetway comic. And in that they were this dysfunctional mess of 'heroes' that hated each other, were primarily concerned with paying the rent, and responsible for more property damage than most of the things they were 'hero-ing' at.

It all culminated in the 'Everyone hates Charmy and wants her to shut up because she's useless and annoying' Crew discovering she was a princess with an entire hive's army at her beck and call and riches to pay off the base in a moment, but hadn't told them 'because they were her friends and she didn't want them to start treating her differently'.

.. I loved that comic >.>

Anyway, on the game proper? I loved it to bits and the only real negative point I feel like raising is the jump button was indeed a little laggy - not so much as to stop me starting to compensate naturally after a bit but.. still.

they already have sonic 1, 2, 3 & knuckles on the PSP, DS, PSN, 360 arcade, steam and probably the wii. not to mention being included in the collections (the genesis collection) on the PS2, Gamecube (maybe the xbox as well), PS3 and 360.

I thought Generations was pretty decent, but then again, I bought it for $10 on Steam and I haven't played a Sonic game since the Dreamcast days. I had heard Colors was pretty good, but I never got to try that out since it never got a PC port.

I do wish the older Sonic stages got some more love. No one wanted to be reminded of some of the newer atrocities and I would have loved to see a proper Casino Night zone or Mystic Cave zone.

They ARE on PC. Go on Steam and search for Sonic. Loads of old Sonic games are listed. There's lots of old Sega games on Steam, surprisingly enough.

Comparing Modern Sonic to a bar of slippery soap makes a great amount of sense. After all, both are so fast that it's more shocking than awesome, and both give you a headache when they inevitably fall down to a variably inconvenient location (as in Sonic right after the red ring or the soap in the toilet).

I thought Generations was pretty good too. Yahtzee does have some good points, but as a whole the game is for sure a step in the right direction. Keep in mind I'm not a Sonic fan and this is the first Sonic game I've played in over 7 years (...which I guess is a good thing. I didn't even know many of Sonic's friends in this game like Cream and the Chaotix gang). It's true that the handling is a bit off at times, momentum can be a *****, collectables are annoying to get when you're zooming by them, and of course what the game represents (ie Sega recycling as opposed to new ideas and celebrating years/games/characters that were better left to forget). A lot about Generations seems like they're at least TRYING to make a step forward by not doing the things people hated in older games. No over-dramatic plots, no new annoying characters (at least here you never NEEDED to play them to progress...and at least Sega didn't add to the pile), no difficult to navigate homeworlds with dead looking NPCs, fewer death traps (FEWER!!!), no lengthly cutscenes, stuff like that. I know the bullshit with 06 and despite that, I can't hate Crisis City x___x. It was awful in the original, but here they made it presentable. I even got through that thing near the end of the 3D section where stuff hurls at you without getting hit on my first try.

Retro Sonic and Retard Sonic made me chuckle.
I also liked the comparison between Capcom/Sonic team RE4/colors

Cheers Yahtzee

I respect Yahtzees opinions, but I disagree with most of it, the story is abysmal, but a terrible sonic story is like having the master sword in zelda, and having not played a sonic game since sonic adventure 2 battle, I had no clue what levels were supposedly shit, I thought the game was a barrel of fun

Sonic Shuffle is one of the worst game ever developed Yahtzee. Even SonicTeam has standards... as minuscule as they are.
