I really want a high-tech MP3 player, and was wondering which of the two to go with.
I'm leaning towards the ipod, but I don't know much about the Zune HD.

Anyone got an idea?

I have a deep hatred for any MP3 player that uses Windows Media Player to organize music. I would recommend the iPod Touch because iTunes is much easier to deal with. The only cool part about the Zune is (I'm not sure, so don't quote me on this) is that it can play any kind of video that works with Windows Media Player while an iPod's videos need to be converted.

Plus, there are always apps. Go for the iPod Touch.

Huh. I think the Zune has apps too... Sadly, wikipedia has very few entries on Zune Technology.

Good news is that Zune doesn't use WMP to organize music. It comes with its own software which is very easy to use.

That said, I've never much cared for Apple or their products, so I might be a little biased. I've had my Zune 30gb for the last 4 years and the only thing that failed was the hard drive which I was able to replace in under a week.

Zune doesn't have nearly as many apps. Plus the iPod touch is awesome. I guess it depends on how much you hate iTunes (or Apple in general), how much money you have to spend and personal preference.

I was given an iPod touch and I really like it. I don't like iTunes though, if that wasn't obvious already.

Yeah. As I said, I'm leaning towards the touch. The only issue is cost. I want the latest touch, but it's $229 for an 8gb, so there's an issue there...

Can't tell you much about the Zune, but boy, do I love my iPod Touch. Besides playing my music, it has entertained me with movies on the train, it has provided me access to the internet when my computer broke down, and, lately, has served as handheld console with games such as Final Fantasy 1 and 2, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Bejewled 2, Civiliation Revolution, etc.

I've had this thing for several years... Bought the 1st gen the same week they hit shelves in Denmark, and I find it more and more useful and neat, constantly finding something else it can do.

And, if you ask me, 8 gb is too little. I have a 16 gb, and even that sometimes have me wishing I had more space.

I don't think you have to use WMP to sync files onto Zune. In fact I think other than the iPod, all other mp3 players let you use whatever the hell you want, Winamp MediaMonkey, whatever you fancy.

In my opinion, the iPod has disgusting sound quality, no equalizer, so all your songs sound flat and lifeless.

When I buy something, I want it do one or two jobs really well, not try to do everything and be shit at them all. Just like I don't buy a mobile phone because it's got a 2 megapixel camera and can play mp3 files.

I have a Samsung P3, great sound quality, 32GB, same price as an 8GB iPod.

If you only want it as an MP3 player, go with the Zune, it will have more space, and from what I've heard, a better UI.

The iPod is a more "fun" device, with games and such.

I would actually recommend a used iPod Classic with a large harddrive over both.

Shows what I know... either way, I would still go for the iPod because I never liked the design of the Zune and because I'm so used to my iPod and iTunes... of course, all my credibility was just thrown out of the window, so if I were you I wouldn't listen to a word I just said.

Go for the touch. As much as a MS fanboy as I am, I recognize their hardware as pretty crappy. The main problem is the hard drive; it's not static like the iPod's, it's moving all the time. You drop it once without it being protected, it can get the HD's disk scratched. That being said, the Zune and Touch are almost the same in terms of over all quality, IMHO...

One of the main reasons I'm getting it is as a more versatile game platform. I'm worried that I'll sacrifice game space for better features included in later models.

I would highly recommend Zune HD. Yeah it windows but still. I can go on the internet with it, the music on Zune is drm free (It does have a smaller library than Apple) and I can load MP3s from my old music library in it and play them.

Its really up to you to decide.

I have yet to load it on my zune but you can play Doom on it (Just do a search for "Doom on Zune HD on google)

Me personally I think its an awesome piece of technology. If they do make a bigger and better version. You can always get Modify the older version if you upgrade.

Also Zune HD does NOT use Microsoft Media player for arranging and loading Music. It uses Zune software to do that.

It depends on what you want in an MP3 player. Going mainstream works, Major is Apple, and Microsoft. I can't use a Zune on my Winamp but I still use it and there are modifications out there to change the way it looks, feels and everything else.

So that's my microsoft side of things.

(Also to note, the Zune HD uses a Solid State Harddrive, No moving parts)

Depending on your phone provider, I would get a Droid. Don't even mess around with dedicated MP3 players, they are outdated. Get something that will do EVERYTHING. Droid/Android phone or iPhone depending on your provider.

There' that. of course, but I shouldn't think the newest models will leave you wantin soon. I've had mine for... what... 3 years? 4? I'm not sure. But it's only just now with OS4 that it is getting "old" and "incompatible" in the sense that I have found a single game that it can't run.

I would, and did, go with Zune. The biggest factor is the price. You get just as many, if not more features for a lower price than for anything Apple. Also you can use many different file types and you won't have to use itunes which is a horribly designed, hard to use, and RESTRICTING program. The only upside that I would give to Apple would be the apps, but you said MP3 player, not App device.

It's not that I hate Apple for no reason. It's just that their company does everything that I hate...

I have no use for a phone, and my parents really don't want to get me something I don't need.

I think you may have misunderstood me. I meant that if I got a much newer model, I wouldn't be able to afford on with a larger HDD.

I have a Droid X. It's not a phone, it's everything. I hate Apple, so any help beyond this point would be biased, and therefore, useless. My opinion is just get something that does EVERYTHING. Whatever that hardware may be.
