Songs that remind you of games

So I was listening to my Pandora Radio on the way to my first day of work in almost a month (thanks Gallbadder you piece of shit) and a couple of songs came on that made me think they would be perfect soundtracks to video games. And it got me thinking of what other songs could be paired with games to make for interesting soundtrack type things.

I don't mean songs that would go in games. But more songs that could be included on the separate soundtrack in the same way Linkin Park is paired with every Transformers movie. Or everything Miracle of Sound does.

Let me give you a few examples of what I mean and see it if reminds you of any other song/game pairings you might've discovered yourself.

Mass Effect - The Day That the World Breaks Down by Ayreon

Everything about this song screams Mass Effect. The song itself is setting up a worldwide extinction event by AI controlled Machines. A lone guy warns people but nobody believes him, so it's up to him and few people who do support and believe him to save the world. The musical themes work for the Mass Effect series, the lyrics fit so well that this song could be a direct tie-in song with the games itself.

Diablo - Ghosts of Perdition by Opeth

While Lyrically this song doesn't tie into Diablo much if at all really. Opeth themselves are masters of mood, and several of their songs could fit with the dark setting of a Diablo game. This song fits the best IMO and would be an easy include on a Diablo-based soundtrack.

God of War - Raw Dog by Dream Theater

This one is cheating, but my favorite band actually did a song for God of War back in the day so I'm including it.

Linkin Park - Burn it Down - Mass Effect 3

Im not the only one who thinks this, apparently, because there are a bunch of fan-made Mass Effect music videos for this song

I wouldn't be surprised if this song was made for some kind of promotional deal that fell through, or something

A group called Pluxus. Basically their entire library is 8-bit inspired music. I don't think they're together anymore, but I recall really getting into them back in the day. This is an absolute shit recording, but you can still hear what I'm talking about.

That's nothing new. Back in a really early YouTube days between 2005 and 2008, you had a whole bunch of people doing amvs with Linkin Park music combined with Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, and sometimes Eva.

I remember downloading Realplayer videos of Dragonball Z Music Videos. On dial-up. Those were the dark days. Some of those videos were incredibly well edited though.

Not a common occurrence, but a European artist has made me think of a couple, like this one for Spiritfarer;

And this for Majora's Mask

And weirdly, Sunless Skies

3 is almost a couple, I know what words are, shuddup!

One last one for Resident Village 8 evil, good game! (A couple of couples is still a couple)

Last time we ever used dial-up was all the way back in mid 2001. After that, never again.

Every time I hear the intro to this song, I think of Mega Man X.

RealPlayer......I just felt myself age twenty years. I remember there being a really good one of Transformers Armada Starscream set to “Numb”. Was pretty awesome.

Here's another head banger for you @CriticalGaming. Now Streets of Rage has always been inspired by r&B and techno. One of those groups being Soul II Soul. Granted, their third album came out not too long after Streets of Rage 2. I find this song fitting for the elevator sections, more so the first game.

I think the only music I associated with games are tracks I was listening to at the time I played the game (I mean, I would have the music playing whilst I played the game). So, for instance, every time I hear tracks from "Pocket Universe" by Yello, I think of Starcraft.

Oh...yeah. Not going to say what that is for me, but I was listening to some awful manufactured Brit pop while playing Blades of Exile.

Also, this is cheating somewhat, but Isolated by Chiasm reminds me of a game:

Zircon's Identity Sequence (2012) is basically a love letter to video games. One of the best electronic symphony soundtracks ever made.

Oh damn, you bastard. You give me synthwave, how DARE YOU!! You know how weak I am to synthwave!! Seriously though, those are some tasty tracks.

OT:

This song over in the covers thread reminded me of this thread but. This song, always makes me think of the original Thief game, beeecauuuuse, it sounds very much like the opening cinematic music, AND the imagery of the opening is very similar too. Not the bits where they show you the women, but the flickering images of arcane symbols, and runic script and the like.

And here is the Thief opening.

Okay the connection to this one is tenuous as hell, but that opening little bit of talk for some reason makes me think of Mass Effect. Like Shepard has been sent on a mission so beneath them and their team that its gonna be a cake walk. So Shepard and the team - I can make Garrus and Tali's names fit easy enough and Steve's the shuttle pilot in ME3 so handy that - deciding to play a sweet, up tempo song as they're massacring their way through the bandits like drunken sailors at a whorehouse.

I have a tendency to listen to music when I'm gaming, particularly in stuff where the sound detail isn't really important or the OST is lacking/lame. Generally try to match the "feel" of whatever I'm playing, too, which occasionally has excellent results.

The one that sticks in my head for lining up perfectly was during one of my first combat sorties in Elite Dangerous. I was in a Viper and dueling a low-rank NPC Vulture over an earthlike planet, and it's only got a sliver of health left. As he's passing between me and the planet, I open up with the multicannons for the kill and the Vulture starts to burn...and then explodes right as Bruce Dickinson hits that high note in the final chorus of Aces High.

There's also something incredibly satisfying about playing the Ironbreaker or Slayer dwarf subclasses in Vermintide 2 while listening to folk-metal like Ensiferum or Equilibrium. Bonus points for hammering on a troll while listening to Trollhammaren.

And one really dumb one to wrap up (because I'm tired of thinking), playing the Centurion AVRE in War Thunder with this on is always good for a laugh:

For those unaware: the Centurion Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers is a version of the Centurion Mk. 5 absolutely not intended in any way for engaging enemy armour in reality, fitted instead with a dozer blade or mine-clearing plow and replacing the standard L7 105mm gun with a stumpy 165mm L9 demolition cannon. In-game, however...look, design intention is irrelevant and the AVRE launches a 65-pound High Explosive Squash Head shell with a trajectory like a rainbow and the approximate impact of an asteroid.

Sonic was pretty much inspired by the music scene from The late '80s & early '90s. Mostly R&B and New Jack Swing. Some pop and j-pop too.

Okay, this may be cheating a bit since it was made for a known zombie flick, but still, how the HELL has this one not ended up in a Dead Rising game or trailer yet?! This seems made for something for Frank West to slaughter zeds to...

Everyone check this artist called 2 Mello. They're pretty much Jet Set Radio fans.
