This thread makes me wonder why Spiderman seems to be the only hero regularly getting games.
Because over the years, Spider-Man has always been given the most consistent quality. Don't get me wrong, there have been more than a couple of duds and bad games, but the quality for the most part was between average and good. It was around the 6th and 7th gen where there was more of a consistent output. Not to mention, Spider-Man always seem to be the most marketable in video games with the only other super hero being Batman.
There were shitloads of superhero games on SNES and i wonder if there is any relation to how the comicbooks have fallen off. As mentioned above by @09philj comics have became too difficult for people to follow over the large volume releases of manga which typically release entire story archs at once.
And on the Genesis too. Don't forget. Also, during the 16 bit era at least, there many superhero games, but most of them were not good. They were either average or terrible. Ironic, because
Comix Zone was the most comic book game you could get on the Genesis and it's an original property from Sega Technical Institute. Sure, you had your
X-Men on Genesis,
Spawn on SNES,
Maximum Carnage on both consoles, and later in the mid to late 90s,
Marvel vs. Capcom, but many superheroes games were average, infamously bad, or forgettable. You had people in charge that most of the time, did not care no understand the time it takes to make a video game. All they cared about was rushing out for Christmas or to meet their stupid quota.
If anything, other than Spider-Man and Batman, games based off of comics books are in a worst position now than they were back then.
Avengers was beyond abysmal and
Ultimate Alliance 3 while a better game, is just alright. We need more than
Injustice or
M vs. C. Where's my good Thor game, Aquaman (DMC style? Sign me up!), Wonder Woman, another Hulk game similar to
Ultimate Destruction? We've either get none of it, because no one wants to put in the effort, or make with (un)intentional substitutes where usually better effort and quality is put in.
God of War 4 is basically a Thor game, and
Miles Morales is a
Static Shock game (or Thor for
@happyninja42). The
inFamous games are also considered the best
Static Shock games or
X-Men games ever made. Even
Ghost of Tshushima feels like a Samurai-Ninja-Batman game and is a super hero game of sorts.
EDIT:
Vanquish is
Casshern with guns. The
W101 is a
Super Sentai/Power Rangers game.
Gungrave is
The Crow, but more sci-fi. Even
Quantum Break is a super hero game when you stop and think for more than a minute.
