Two different subjects, in two different forms of media, so I dunno what you are talking about here except to make a snarky comment for no reason.
No, that was your definition of what "woke" meant. And I'm saying that the image you seem to have in your head of what Witchblade should look like, or else she's apparently "woke", is completely unrealistic. Amazingly attractive, AND also a good actor are not a packaged deal. They are in fact, about as rare as "martial artist and good actor" as a packaged deal. You might have 3-4 a generation of actors that have genuine acting talent, AND genuine physical talent (that isn't them just taking a few months crash course with the stunt team to be passable). Because don't forget, she's ALSO going to have to fight like a total badass, AND be super smoking hot, AND also be a good actress that doesn't sound like dead weight. But the reality is that if they have to pick an average looking woman to actually portray Witchblade, instead of trying to find a page accurate body double, who can't act her way out of a paper fucking bag, are you really going to want the latter?

He is referencing my complaint towards the TV show due to the use of the term "Actress", and I never complained about the actress in that regard on the TV show. So I don't see what the comment has to do with the comics at all, as far as I know, they never changed her appearance drastically throughout the comic's run.

I never said anything of the sort towards the show. It's a TV show so obviously they couldn't dress her in basically nothing because it has to be PG-13 at best. So unless you are just projecting, I dunno what you are talking about. The writing on the show was just weak iirc it's been like 20 years since I've watched it so.

Does Dark Horse still do Comics? Did they make Witchblade woke? Because I used to LOVE Witchblade for.....reasons dont worry about it.
Witchblade is Image (Well, technically Marc Silvestri's imprint Top Cow) and Image is, as it ever was, a company that has little to no involvement in the process of actually making the books it publishes, for better and for worse. Marc Silvestri doesn't work on it anymore though, he let Caitlin Kittredge write a new Witchblade series with a new main character that ran from 2017 to 2020. You can read the first issue of that for free from Top Cow's website. (https://topcow.com/comics/free-2/) Another new creative team's come in for a new Witchblade series with the original main character written by Marguerite Bennett. That was meant to launch in February, not sure if it did. IDK what you think "woke" is but Top Cow, and Image in general, still pump out the sex and violence, although it leans a bit more emotionally mature and socially conscious than it did at its inception. Top Cow published the lesbian bondage romance comic Sunstone that I like very much.

I'm honestly kind of shocked there aren't any Hellboy games.

While we're on the subject of the woke american comics industry, apparently the Kimetsu No Yaiba (demon slayer) manga is singlehandedly outselling the entire comic book industry.

It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to understand where this trend is leading, and Dark Horse is likely very well aware of this which is why they're shifting their focus more to games and animation as opposed to relying on american comics for their bread and butter.

There's quite a few factors that are doing in western comics.
1) Issue-led business model. Everything gets sold as individual issues first before having a chance of becoming a trade paperback, which doesn't really reflect how people actually want to buy their comics. Individual issues are terrible value for money and physically fragile, and I've certainly never bought one myself. It also means there's a significant delay between some issues being released and them being released in a format most people want. In contrast, western releases of manga go straight to tankōbon.
2) Price. Manga is printed on cheap paper in black and white so runs to about £8 a volume on a new release, which is about 8-9 chapters. Western trade paperbacks are printed in full colour on glossy paper and you get about 5 issues for £9-£13.
3) The west does not have a thriving animation industry churning out faithful adaptations of ongoing comics that might induce people to pick up the source material. This is a large avenue for promotion of manga, strong adaptations at the all you can eat anime buffet will induce people back to the comics.
4) Fuck all subculture and promotional media for comics. Even if you're aware of the comics industry beyond Marvel and DC it's not particularly easy to stay informed about what's coming out and what you might be interested in.

A lot of great comics came out in the last decade alone. Saga, Paper Girls, Sex Criminals, Southern Bastards, Descender, The Wicked+The Divine, Die, East of West, Lumberjanes, and Sunstone are just a small selection, but it's hard to get even good stuff over the obstacles listed. Image's position is pretty much secure, since their business model is still probably the best deal for creators (Every comic I listed above except Lumberjanes is an Image book), but the other small publishers will likely need every licensed comic they can get along with some other revenue streams to keep the lights on.

Thank you. I figured that out myself, but that still makes way more sense than this whole "woke" crap. Like I told Critical before, the manga industry has been running circles around the comic book industry since the 2000s.

When i first saw Darkest Dungeon, i thought they asked Mike Mignola to design the characters.

I hope they get him on as a creative consultant, when making a Hellboy games. Because god, he deserves one.

Things would be so much cooler if they made cartoons on the level on the 1990's X-men show. Shows that stay true to the characters and the world that the comics build.

It's strange too, because it's not like America is short on Cartoons but the vast majority are child-driven shows so they have to be very simple and easy to follow. Meanwhile we also have adult animation in the forms of Family Guy and similar shows.

But for whatever reason the West unwilling to invest in narative driven series cartoons that tell a continuous story throughout the course of 15-20 episodes.

As much fun as that sounds, not everything has to be like the 90s X-Men or Batman: TAS. While staying true to their source materials, changes will always be made to fit the current time or for the sake of making more compelling characters. This is nothing new.

Meanwhile we also have adult animation in the forms of Family Guy and similar shows.
We got Invincible, Castlevania, and later, Trese. They're pretty much taking the place of what narrative focused Western kids shows used to do.

There are some Western shows that still do this, but just not as abundant as it was back then. There is or was:

  • The Ben 10 Franchise - Too bad they ran that in to the ground and did not when to end. I stop at Ultimate Alien.
  • Generator Rex
  • Legend of Korra - Though the season got better and worse at the same time, and I pretend it does not exist.
  • Gravity Falls
  • Adventure Time - Starting around the 2nd and 3rd season. I lost interest though, and came back for the finale for closure.
  • MLP: Friendship is Magic
  • Owl House - Still running, but I don't have Disney XD or +
  • Infinity Train
  • Glitchtechs
  • Duck Tales (2017)
  • Steven Universe
  • She-Ran Princess of Power
  • Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts
You're right in that should be more superhero shows for kids, but Disney does not want to put in the effort. At least WB still tries every now and then with their animations geared towards kids. In Disney/Marvel's justification, it's "We already have the MCU, they don't need anything else, because we don't need anything else". Which is bullshit and they know it. Way to go insulting your target audience, you dumb shits!

It wouldn't do them much good anyway, since superhero comics are probably one of the least accessible forms of media on the market, particularly for children who'll struggle to find age appropriate material in the current landscape of Marvel and DC.

In some ways I think Dark Horse really needs to get out of Hellboy's shadow, particularly since the series has ended.

I get it, but the fact they could not bother try is what I find disappointing. Sure, they had Avengers Assemble and Hulk and the Agents of Smash, but that was all the way back in early to mid 2010s, and those shows ended long ago.

Sure, but it's a video game. Someone here mentioned Hellboy got one since the run started. That's nothing.

Plus, kicking it it off with one featuring their probably best known character would only make sense.

I most certainly am not a rocket surgeon then since my takeaway from these numbers, if true, is that comics actually can be commercially viable without having to branch into other ventures.

This thread makes me wonder why Spiderman seems to be the only hero regularly getting games.

There were shitloads of superhero games on SNES and i wonder if there is any relation to how the comicbooks have fallen off. As mentioned above by @09philj comics have became too difficult for people to follow over the large volume releases of manga which typically release entire story archs at once.

Though i will point out that the issue based releases do still happen for manga in Japan. However they often come as a collective in magazines with single issues of a bunch of different mangas at once. So when people get single issues they are still getting plenty to read for their buck.

Arguably manga does not have the same collectability as comics do. Likely due to the black and white nature and easier to produce art overall.

I do wonder how marvel would do if they sold their monthly issues for every character (or at least all similar characters) in a single bigger book.

Because over the years, Spider-Man has always been given the most consistent quality. Don't get me wrong, there have been more than a couple of duds and bad games, but the quality for the most part was between average and good. It was around the 6th and 7th gen where there was more of a consistent output. Not to mention, Spider-Man always seem to be the most marketable in video games with the only other super hero being Batman.

And on the Genesis too. Don't forget. Also, during the 16 bit era at least, there many superhero games, but most of them were not good. They were either average or terrible. Ironic, because Comix Zone was the most comic book game you could get on the Genesis and it's an original property from Sega Technical Institute. Sure, you had your X-Men on Genesis, Spawn on SNES, Maximum Carnage on both consoles, and later in the mid to late 90s, Marvel vs. Capcom, but many superheroes games were average, infamously bad, or forgettable. You had people in charge that most of the time, did not care no understand the time it takes to make a video game. All they cared about was rushing out for Christmas or to meet their stupid quota.

If anything, other than Spider-Man and Batman, games based off of comics books are in a worst position now than they were back then. Avengers was beyond abysmal and Ultimate Alliance 3 while a better game, is just alright. We need more than Injustice or M vs. C. Where's my good Thor game, Aquaman (DMC style? Sign me up!), Wonder Woman, another Hulk game similar to Ultimate Destruction? We've either get none of it, because no one wants to put in the effort, or make with (un)intentional substitutes where usually better effort and quality is put in. God of War 4 is basically a Thor game, and Miles Morales is a Static Shock game (or Thor for @happyninja42). The inFamous games are also considered the best Static Shock games or X-Men games ever made. Even Ghost of Tshushima feels like a Samurai-Ninja-Batman game and is a super hero game of sorts.

EDIT: Vanquish is Casshern with guns. The W101 is a Super Sentai/Power Rangers game. Gungrave is The Crow, but more sci-fi. Even Quantum Break is a super hero game when you stop and think for more than a minute.
