It's a slow time for me right now. There is not many hot takes on my mind at the moment. You didn't mention the other two I listed. They are a lot hotter.

I think Ashley is semi okay so I'd still keep her around, but the problem is that every other character in ME1 is a character+race while the human are just themselves. Tali is her character but also inform you about the Geth V Quarian side of the story. Wrex is his character but also talk about the Genophage and Krogan. Garus is his character and the Turian. Liara is her character but also Asari and background Prothean stuff. Ashley and Kaiden are just themselves and that's not much sadly. Earth/alliance doesn't seem all that different from contemporary human, at least when compared to alien, so none of this is there to make them more interesting.

Also the aliens in ME1 feel more like they can have a genuine rapport with Shepard since they've been brought on as outside volunteers and therefore feel more like peers (Garrus, Wrex) or mentees (Tali, Liara) rather than being his subordinates.

Well, in terms of having a hit series and an established fanbase that will continue buying whatever you put out, yeah it could be said he’s coasted. But at the same time, he’s probably been railroaded by Konami into doing a long string of sequels for a series he’s publicly stated wanting to be done with about two decades ago now. It’s still quite something then that, even under those circumstances, he’s put more effort into these games than a majority of his contemporaries in this industry.

Well, the thing about the N64 controller I agree with (though it did work pretty well for some games), but if we went into the Genesis vs. SNES thing, we would have to kung-fu fight.

I'm not implying the SNES was bad or anything, but given the choice, I have too much attachment and memories about the black 16 bit console. Plus, nothing comes close to awesomeness that is Streets of Rage. SNES closest brawler is Turtles in Time. Also, most SNES brawlers are average or single player only. That I never played that many 16-bit RPGs back in the day. I was not even fully aware of them until the PS1 era.

I don’t think Ash is a racist, at least not as we would use the term. She has a massive chip on her shoulders with the Turians because of her grandfather’s surrender in the First Contact War. I think what they were trying for with her was someone who succeeds with familiarity breeding understanding. And of course there is the common trope of fire forged friendships which is pretty ubiquitous in genres like this.

But yes; occasionally repellent beats white noise that walks like a man in an RPG.

I know she gets better but it's hard for me not to remember that time she said "I can't tell the difference between the aliens and the animals" . Considering most of the aliens on the citadel are sentient, it comes across as pretty racist.

Ada Wong is the worst recurring character in the entire Resident Evil franchise. Whatever likeable or sympathetic traits she had in the second game is gone by the time of RE4. Over the past 20 years, were no closer to learning her backstory, or the organization she works for, and we're supposed to see her as this bad ass anti-hero, when she's just really a selfish jackass. You don't care what happens between her and Leon. And Leon's is better paired off with Claire or someone else. I'm glad Capcom finally decide to drop their stupid "romantic" plot line as it went absolutely nowhere.

Shamus Young talk about that in his book lenght blog about Mass effect, his take on it is a lot more nuance. Essentially she's not being dismissive, she literally can't tell the difference since she never saw any alien. If someone show you a random picture of a creature from another planet and ask you to decide if something is sentient or just an animal you'd have no way of knowing and the most sensible way to answer this would be "I can't tell". Like look at the Hannar, you'd see one you wouldn't be able to tell what it was, it's not wearing any cloths, has no face to speak of and is made of jelly, alien or animal? Or the Elcor, looks more like an elephant than a person.

It's ambient dialogue on the Citadel. Apparently, she says it on the Presidium if you talk to her while standing near a Keeper. I can't confirm that she only says it next to a Keeper, but I can confirm she says it on the Presidium.

Paypal sucks and I never trusted them. After the all the shit my older brother went through back in 2005; no, thank you. Thankfully, he got all his money back, but it took a week and a half.
