It's sort of like the difference between the city of LA and LA county. The valley is in LA county, but when people talk about the ridiculous costs of living in LA they don't really include the valley which is comparably affordable. And this yank has learned something today.
I lived in West LA on the border of Santa Monica and paid $2000 a month for a studio apartment. A friend of mine lived in Sherman Oaks in the San Fernando Valley and paid about $850 a month for a similar (slightly larger) studio apartment.
Why did I live in West LA then when I could have lived in the valley for way cheaper? Didn't feel like spending 3 hours a day in traffic during my commute to work.
