And this yank has learned something today.
It's sort of like the difference between the city of LA and LA county. The valley is in LA county, but when people talk about the ridiculous costs of living in LA they don't really include the valley which is comparably affordable.

I lived in West LA on the border of Santa Monica and paid $2000 a month for a studio apartment. A friend of mine lived in Sherman Oaks in the San Fernando Valley and paid about $850 a month for a similar (slightly larger) studio apartment.

Why did I live in West LA then when I could have lived in the valley for way cheaper? Didn't feel like spending 3 hours a day in traffic during my commute to work.

Someone did a study a few years ago asking City of London (i.e. finance industry) workers the same sort of thing, what's the average wage in the UK. They came out with IIRC ~£50,000, which was about twice reality.
Considering they’ve been making jokes about this sort of thing in episodes of Yes, Prime Minister (“Power to the People”, if you’re interested) I don’t think it’s new information to anyone. And living in certain parts of the country will skewer your view.

Just going to point out that the "City of London" (with caps) technically is a tiny place that, combined with Greater London, forms London, which is the main part of the London Metropolitan Area. Or something, and those terms for London get used interchangeably even though they shouldn't be.
City of London in the sense I employed is a term that means the London financial industry - stockbrokers, bankers, insurers, etc. Much like "The Beltway" in the USA means US politics.

In that other sense you mention, it's a basis for the claim that the most populous city in Britain is Birmingham. Because whether somewhere in the UK is a city is technically determined by that place having a charter saying so. Under this rationale, Greater London is an urban area containing two cities, City of London and City of Westminster, both of which are very small and with low populations.

This might be the most tone-deaf, compassionless, abominable post I've ever seen. 👏
There's a point where compassion ends, and realism/pragmatism begins. I have been on the receiving end of the homeless, and even progressives like Ana Kasparian are sick of the homeless in LA. We are sick of being accosted by people who likely have significant undiagnosed mental health issues. Yes, I generally think every homeless should be given a small house or apartment. But thanks to the City Council, and bipartisan opposition against this, it's not possible right now.

Just the other day a homeless person pushed an Asian-American woman on the train tracks in NYC and killed her after trying to push another woman who I assume was white. Not that race matters, but it seems very odd that two races are being targeted ad hoc by the homeless, and that's the gist I get from multiple forums, and subreddits as well.

The Asian-American community is sick of it.

Leave us the hell alone.

Yes, I'm sure your compassion reservoir is positively run dry.

OK, and you believe that these actions reflect on the tens of millions of other homeless people? This may surprise you, but most murderers have houses. But a disproportionately high number of victims of murder are homeless.

Think about it. You're complaining about things like panhandling and drug use. Yes, they're irritating and unpleasant to see. And why do you think people resort to that, when they've been put in one of the most dangerous, precarious situations imaginable in the modern world? This is a life in which freezing to death is common, and the homeless endure daily abuse-- physical, as well as verbal-- from passers-by. It's common for homeless people to be kicked, to have their small number of possessions stolen, to be spat on. Drug use offers a fucking escape, and possibly one of the few fleetingly-ok experiences they might have that week. And panhandling? Yeah, if you haven't eaten for 3 or 4 days, desperation might drive you to be a bit "rude". Have some perspective.

The truth is that these behaviours are symptomatic. A set of circumstances has put those people in that situation, whether it's disownment by their parents, foreclosure, addiction, bankruptcy. And society has its priorities so fucked-up that we do not provide the support necessary to provide a basic standard of living.

So express anger at the causes that result in putting people in such desperate circumstances as this.

But there are literally shelters, food pantries, and a whole host of public services available to you if you're homeless, and again which is more dangerous the streets or the shelters. And what do you want me or many others to do. The young, progressive, and or moral people have tried to install progressive after progressive. We lost with India Walton, we lost with Nina Turner, and we lost with Bernie Sanders. I have personally been on multiple progressive campaigns only to see a lack of volunteers, and support from colleges, and young people kill our campaign. News flash we aren't going to win in 2024 against Biden because crime is up, and republican culture wars are increasingly providing dividends. It's either Trump and or the alt-right or an establishment dem like Biden, Harris, or Mayor Pete, so this problem is likely to persist, in which case the only good move is to leave the cities and go to the suburbs.

This is almost word-for-word an excuse Ebenezer Scrooge gives in A Christmas Carol to dismiss charitable giving.

I'm not asking you to reform the government or win an election. I'm asking you not to mouth off, and avoid expressing your disdain for vulnerable people. I don't think that's too much to ask.

A tangent, but given that the first target was a white woman and the second an Asian woman, it looks like it was a gender thing rather than a race thing, assuming the victims weren't chosen at random.

"Qu'ils mangent de la brioche" aka, "Let them eat cake". Same sort of energy. Tho you could go back further, like if you mined the writings of Roman patricians, it probably wouldn't take too long to strike gold.

I've heard a few arguments that Marie Antoinette's famous line there is a case of 'not what you say, but how you say it' in so much as she wasn't being disdainful of Frances poor not having bread because they're poor but rather if there's no bread, eat the cake you obviously have instead. Then again history is written by the victors and last I checked the people that won were the ones that basically burnt the French aristocracy to the ground so there you go.

I mean shit, if we ever manage to translate cave paintings, ten gets you ten thousand there'll be some entries citing this same argument. Nothing new under the sun, right?

I heard that she never said it at all, that possibly it was said by some other aristo with a similar name, or it was just made up afterwards.

Eh, yeah, that's the other explanation for the quote i.e. the wealthy being so ignorant of the living situation of the people that it simply doesn't occur to them that if they can't afford bread, then brioche (then an expensive luxury food) is right out. Hence the similarity to modern day wealthy being so out of touch they think people earn way more than they actually do. Or those stupid opinion pieces you get once in a while telling manual laborers that they should "just learn to code" if they find themselves out of a job. Or some dimwit politician thinking a 21yo just starting his first job would only pay 12 bucks a year on insurance.

Also, found an earlier example. A 7th century Chinese emperor, upon being told his people were starving because cuz of failed rice harvests, asked "Why don't they eat meat porridge?". Not quite ancient times yet, but getting there.
I heard that she never said it at all, that possibly it was said by some other aristo with a similar name, or it was just made up afterwards.
There's reasons to believe it was said by someone else, or by someone in her entourage, but it probably got attributed to her because she was deeply unpopular due to a (deserved) reputation fro frivolousness and extravagance. Or maybe revolutionary writer just made it up.

"anti-work = pressure employers to pay employees more"

I wonder what else that subreddit considers "anti-work". Weekends? 8-hour working days? Sick leave?

Fuck weight restrictions, deliver your goods or die trying!
The weight restrictions being talked about here are the extra ones put on old/damaged bridges because they've become structurally deficient (you know, ones the infrastructure act will help fund restoration/replacement for).

Yes, it could be definitely be worded better, but the meaning is pretty damn clear if you're not looking for reasons to be angry. I love how even when he's arguing for funding you also support, you still can't help but shit on him.

Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

Yeah, fuck it while you're at it, remove height restrictions from tunnels.
A tunnel's maximum height doesn't (generally) become lower the longer it exists. A bridge's maximum weight does.
