Sony will be buying Bungie. Which marks a first time a previously owned Microsoft studio will now join Sony’s ranks.

So constructive. They could have spent 3.6 billion dollars creating studios and making games. What do their cinematic games typically cost, 50 million?

Really don't get the point of this. Sony purchases Bungie, but their games will still be multiplatform. And even if they weren't, as big a hit as Destiny is, what other IPs does Bungie own at this point? Marathon (extremely niche), and maybe Myth, which is not also niche, but also an RTT, which isn't a genre I think Sony's ever really bothered with. And yeah, they've got at least one new IP in the works, but even so...

If Sony wanted access to an exclusive FPS franchise, maybe they could have revived Killzone or Resistance?

Because Killzone and Resistance never got to the level of popularity of Halo or COD (partially Sony's fault for the Dualshock 3 controller being utterly terrible for shooters).

They're banking on Bungie being able to make lightening strike twice and come out with the next big console shooter, and I don't think it's a good bet. Then again, maybe Sony has seen Bungie's new IP and have seen enough to think it's a "Halo killer" to use 7th gen console war parlance and think it's going to be big for them for several sequels and possibly multiple console generations.

I was surprised by this -

But still, that’s lot of moola to put into one studio that basically has one surprisingly killer IP. Unless they both know something else we don’t. I guess it’s common to overpay for this kind of stuff, as Microsoft had shown with Bethesda and now Activision. But it remains to be seen what kind of ROI can be had in any of these cases.

FFS it’s just crazy to think…the guy who once headed the studio making a game that was billed (by media of course) as Sony’s “Halo Killer” is now not only the head of PlayStation, but also bought the bloody studio that made Halo.

Yes. They're idiots in this regard. Also, they can could have ported all three of each games from the PS3 era at any time on their mondern consoles with the press of a button. Though as proven in 2021, Sony does not care about preservation, nor games as art.

Porting PS3 games is hard because the cell processor architecture sucked, so it's really not "a push of a button."

Still I would like to replay the Resistance games on a modern system. Not Killzone though, Killzone was always rather mediocre.

I think they bought Bungie due to their brand name being famous. Destiny did rather well in large part due to Bungie’s name attached to the project. I suspect Sony is banking on their next game selling well due to how marketable the Bungie name is.

And Sony is once again done in by their own arrogance and we all suffer for it. If they can get all of the Uncharted Trilogy, Last of Us 1, and God of War III running on the PS4, they get can get the others. They have no fucking excuses. If it's that hard, then they have no one to blame but themselves.

I prefer Resistance as well, but I only really care about the 3rd game. Resistance 1 is fine, Resistance 2 while easier, took too much from Call of Duty (two weapon limit, regenerating health), and Resistance 3 is the best. R3 brings back the weapon wheel, health meters, and has an upgrade system for weapons.

Yeah, because people will actually buy those games. If the potential profit from the games isn't significantly higher than the price to port the games then Sony has no reason to do it. They've already ported most of their larger first party games (or they've gotten remakes) and the smaller games don't have a large enough install base for Sony to care.

These games do have a large enough base, but they don't make all of the money in the entire universe for Sony. Like I said before, if they ported Resistance 3, I would be fine on my own. At least having these shooters would spice up some variety. I like third person action games, but you can only do it so many times, before certain ones start blending in to others. Especially with the "forced walking" sections. The only ones I care about are God of War and Spider-Man. I don't like Last of Us 1 or 2, Horizon I respect, but have no interests, Rift Apart is on PS5, and that new Sackboy game is interesting, but not invested at the moment. I hate Uncharted 4, and while Lost Legacy is better, I still hate Nadine. Also, the Uncharted series does not do much for me. I played them one or twice depending on the game, and then I moved on.

If Sony can buy out Bungie, they can afford these ports or reboot one of these franchises. They just don't wanna put in the effort.

The only reason that Resistance and Killzone were ever "popular" is because the 7th gen was obsessed with shooters and these were the only decent shooters on the playstation, but they aren't exactly great games and I don't think anyone misses them enough for there to be a large install base for a remake/re-release.

Killzone especially was a mediocre shooter in a pretty wrapping, but that wrapping isn't very impressive 10 years later so rebooting it you'd be left with mediocrity all the way around.

The Resistance series has some pretty cool weapons, and a couple of good set-pieces but I was never wowed by it. There are so many better shooters that it's really not worth bringing these games back.

I know. I was there when it happened.
but they aren't exactly great games
Resistance 3 is the only good and fun game in the franchise. Resistance has aged horribly. Killzone 2 was okay, and 3 while better, is just more refined. Killzone 1 fucking sucked.

There are plenty of people that miss them, you just have bothered to look around or ask. I don't "miss" Killzone, but I would not mind seeing a reboot of that or Resistance.

In your opinion. I rather play Resistance 3 or Killzone 2 & 3 than Far Cry 2-6, Primal, New Dawn, Rage 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Halo Infinite, Battlefiel 1, V, & 2042, Wolfestein: Youngbloods, and Overwatch. I know about the indie boomer shooter and retro throwback FPS, and many of those are better than Resistance and Killzone. I don't care; I can play and have fun with either of them, when it suits me.

A rebooted Killzone or Resistance can work, just have to put more effort in to it and embrace new school with old-school fundamentals. Get rid of regenerating health, bloody screen. Get rid of two weapon limit. Add more verticality. For Killzone, have two different campaigns. One for the ISA, and another for the Helghast. Instead doing a strictly linear campaign, have either semi-open levels, or a hub world for Resistance, a la Prey (2006). Anything is possible, if you put your mind and effort in to the ideas.

After the Microsoft acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, the value of the Microsoft stock rose and the value of the Sony stock fell down.

I wonder if this could just be a panic response to keep the stock value high. From the look of the curve, it appears to have worked since the stock value of Sony has increased.

I've read the news that say that Bungie intends to keep their titles multiplatform. I suspect this means that they will come out on the PC, since Sony's other first party IPs such as God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn are available on that platform.

Im sure it is just a coincidence, or at most a reaction from last-year's Bethesda acquisition.

Acquisitions like this take ages to negotiate.

I would be very surprised if it took Sony less than 2 weeks after hearing the Activision news, to buy out a whole new studio.

Im not really too sure what Bungie is doing.

Since 2000, Bungie has been partnered (on a long-term basis) with three different publishers.

Microsoft, Activision, and now Sony.

I swear, we'll be hearing the Bungie is partnering with Nintendo in a few years.
