Let's change some genders here. Rowling had abuse and then says all men are criminals/ rapist etc. Is that acceptable? Like, I can understand it, but that's not the same as saying its acceptable.
I felt like what she initially was saying is that she 'understands what trans people are feeling from what she says about them because she got abused.' Which is spiralled into a whole other mess.
That is a pretty common trope though. Will Ferrell even made a movie based on that premise.
That's not much of a defense. Antisemitism is pretty common, but we don't excuse that just because the author, say, was injured in a war their country lost.
Alternatively, we can agree that everyone who's had some trauma in their own lives is free to condemn Rowling, which probably includes most of the trans community.
I know, and I expect no better of most people.
I do expect better of people who use their status as abuse survivors for political ends, and in particular for people who claim to feel love and empathy for all victims of abuse.
I'm entirely comfortable with the fact that most people have very little empathy for victims of abuse or sexual violence provided they have the smallest window in which to rationalize it to themselves. Those people are worms, but at least they don't claim to be anything else. What actually penetrates the thick skin in this case is the sheer hypocrisy.
