I am with Max here. Sony is not giving out enough info, and they know this. Funny how they have all of these prices. but can't even bother to give a list, despite this big announcement.

Sony has to do everything in the most adversarial way possible. "FINE, we'll give you what you want, but it's on OUR terms! Want to know more? FUCK OFF!"

What I would want to know is how good the emulation of the older titles will be. Nintendo has had to do some work on the emulator the Switch employs.

Considering how good the emulation was on most PS1 & PS2 game on PS3, hopefully about the same or even better. I will say it's frustrating that PS3 games will be streaming only, and not emulated. That does not make any sense and is stupid. PS Now might as well still exist, if PS3 games are streaming only. You have the money and means Sony. Either that, or start re-releasing your games that did not make it to last generation.

I'd love to be able to plug my PS1/2/3 games into my PS5(I mean PS4 would be better but they're not gonna update that at this point) and have them work. That's the big reason I got a THICC PS3 which no longer works reliably. Now I have to futz around with the PC to try to play those older games.

OR SONY could make their back catalogue more accessible.

I kept my PS2 slim, so I can play PS2 and PS1 games. I got an HDMI Converter that does 720p and 1080p. The only thing that sucks is that I can play light gun games with gun controllers anymore.

They’re tip-toeing the waters for a reaction, which shows they’re not exactly confident about everything yet. It’s what happens when big companies are forced to chase the money through the double edged sword that is competition. Same thing happened with the motion control crap, then VR, then streaming services, now this. Some of it works out better than others but Sony will end up straddling a fine line the more they veer away from their main strengths.

If they’re smart they’ll go all-in with taking requests at some point for games that aren’t launching with it, and at least do a “test drive” option for new releases where people can try them on any level of the service for an hour or so like they did for RE2 IIRC.

The really weird part was that the game was already available in english, fully voice acted and everything. When more and more people started talking about it I got the asian version which could be played fully in english (I think they re did the translation for the eventual NA release). They had so little faith in it that they didn't even bother to release it despite most of the work already been done, I hope whoever made that call at Sony lost their job, clearly they have very little abilities to judge game quality.
Yoshida also admitted they (Sony) didn’t seem to understand why PS4 was selling so well.

Uh, yeah…so, they like, made a fairly budget friendly, well performing games system that focused on games and cut the frivolous bs unlike their main competitor for starters?

It kinda goes to show how out of touch companies can be, and that some of their success is often more miraculous than anything. One would think even if they read what folks are saying on a few of the more popular gaming message boards it’d get them a better sense of things than any focus group bs organized by the suits in charge.

Anyways, here’s a bit of an explanation where the “style of development” is blamed for misjudging Demon’s Souls -

Ironically enough though, Yoshida thought GoW 2018 was trash too when he first played it, so double yeah. Then there’s that story about them sweating bullets about revealing Horizon: Zero Dawn because Aloy was a woman. It’s kinda fitting that the head of Guerrilla Games is now in charge of PlayStation. It’s just too bad he still has to take orders from Jim Ryan.

My thicc PS3 stopped working at some point and I had to send it back for repair, I was so worried to would ship me back a non compatible version, thankfully they didn't and I still have that massive thing, can also double as a wrecking ball if I ever have to take down a concrete wall. With how well the the NES/SNES mini did I'm surprised there's not a bigger push for retro console, imagine some mini PS1/PS2 that you could buy cartridge or DVD for with like 10-20 games on them or something and just plug and play easy, should sell pretty well and they could probably make those out of outdated cell phone parts or something. I guess working out the legal issues might be more complicated than it's worth.

I feel like this article is somehow directed towards me and I dont know why. I've owned Prey for years now, so long I can't remember when I bought it and I've yet to even install it. I've heard it's good from many different people, Shamus Young did a whole series talking about it a couple months ago and I believe it probably is good....and yet, when I finish one game and am ready to start another, Prey is never at the top of my list of "I MUST PLAY THIS". Or even in the top 5 games. It's always some other game that's been simmering in the background for a while or some game that came out in the last few months I haven't had a chance to try yet(Expeditions Rome is sitting there but that's a 30 hour game and I'm playing Elden Ring) and Prey is never in that mental space of "Man, I need to give that a try". and it's so wierd in that regard.

It doesn't help I can only really focus on like one game at a time because if I try to play several it either means I make no progress on either or one ends up getting shafted for the one I'm far more interested in and hopes it gets finished at some point....later.

I tried Prey on GamePass and, yeah, I thought it was pretty great. I didn't finish it because it centers around two gameplay things I have little patience for: darkness and first-person perspective. But I know that's just my own hang-ups. Lots of folks like crawling around creepy dark immersive hallways with puzzles and baddies and this is definitely and excellently done such game.

The so-called "immersive sim" games never ever ever click for me. Prey, Dishonnered, Death Loop, these first person explorative choice heavy games just never feel right for me. I don't know why I feel like I just see through the wool these games try to pull over the player's eyes and see them for what they are. Death Loop i was pretty harsh on duing my impressions thread and frankly i thought it was one of the worst games of last year.

These games are games that you either get super into and really absorbed into, or you bounce off them so hard you can't stand them.

I agree with Yahtzee to an extent. The problem with the game is not that it's too good, but that there are so many other games like it. Bioshock, Dead Space, Evil Within 2, etc. At the end of the day this reboot was just another game that wanted to be System Shock 2. Prey (2017) should have just been called something else. The fact that the sequel got canceled still burned in a lot of hardcore fans of The originals mines. No matter how good the game would have been and is, that wouldn't take care of the void in their heart. I bought Prey (2017) on sale once used, but never got around to installing it and later we sold it at a higher price or something else. Bethesia for canceling the sequel and they know that.

Speaking of the original game, there's some extra info on the beginning of the development process that got canceled in this video.

My own FPS-phobia aside, it is true that I freaking LOVED Dishonored. I played it in super-stealth mode, super-murder mode, I was obsessed.
Meanwhile I'll never touch Death Loop, and wasn't even interested in Dishonored 2.
All I can say is that there things about games that we like or dislike that I can't put into words. Something about how everything comes together in Dishonored really worked for me- maybe 'cause the levels weren't too big and how easy it was to zip around from spot to spot, I dunno.

Well I do know one thing- everything wasn't super dark!

Maybe I’ll give Dishonored another try someday. I tried it a few years ago and had it refunded on Steam after the opening level didn’t impress, but I might’ve been too distracted with other games and asked myself if I really need another backlog item currently.

The free form nature of it sounded cool though.

I think the problem with 'immersive sim' games is they often try to do too many different things so end up being stretched too thing to be great at anything. That leaves the narrative to do the heavy lifting and once you've gone the 'choice really matter' route that hits the same problem keeping the narrative structure solid while also allowing it to go all over the place *or* you make the choices not really matter and piss off the players that shit is important to. The end result to all that is a game with 'servicable' gameplay and a sprawling, confused narrative that mostly serves to show how impressed the writers/designers are with their own galaxy branes.

It's one of my favourite game, over 100 hours into it, if you like organic exploration its really great for that.

It's true that it lacks any sort of big thing to grab onto, it's decent at everything and the only thing it really excel at (level design) is not something that can be easily experienced or shared. I think its also a game that can easily be played "the wrong way", if you just go into the game thinking its a standard run and shoot at monster you'll be incredibly disappointed.

For a person that plays fighting games, Max is not the best when it comes to brawlers at times. I get it, VJ is a bit of a different breed, but man he and the crew die a lot to the first end mini boss. Even I didn't die until the second stage, and a lot at the end of stage 4. Everyone is different, but we tried to tell them how to use the powers. Simmons eventually got it.

I do find it funny later in the video, and whenever they put part 2 up, that they all finally admit The Bouncer is not a good game. Yet when they played God Hand, Simmons out right said The Bouncer is better than God Hand. Simmons was not trolling , nor being ironic at the time. Now it is the reverse. They do say Bouncer is better in the multiplayer when you're going against each other. That part is true, but crazy how opinions change.
