Huh. Apparently this trailer is getting even more engagement than The Rise of Skywalker's. I mean, yeah the sequel trilogy wasn't exactly well regarded at that point, but still very impressive for a sequel to a movie from over a decade ago. Again, where the heck have these Avatar fans been hiding? Crazy.
You may be surprised to find that
Avatar has quite a few fans. According to Wikipedia, it's the 2nd highest grossing film (after adjustments for inflation) of ALL TIME behind only
Gone With The Wind. It's a visually beautiful movie if ham-fisted in its message. Where have fans been hiding? Well you said it yourself, it's from 2009, and unlike Star Wars or Marvel, we haven't had
Avatar sequels, spinoffs and miniseries crammed down our throats every couple of months for the past decade. There's been nothing new to consume or discuss let alone rant and rave about that our constant presence might be noticeable over the past 13 years. Now we've heard there's a sequel; we're "coming out of hiding."
Honestly, I think it only gets hate
because it was so enormously popular, and that's what people like to do: pick apart what the masses enjoy, and hopefully find themselves in an echo chamber for validation.
Avatar doesn't do anything offensively bad, and the things it does well are done great. If someone doesn't like it, that's entirely fine, but there's almost 3 BILLION dollars in the bank that says it did SOMETHING right.
