Steam Summer sale 2022 damage report.

So another summer and another Steam sale. What have you gotten and what gems are among your acquired games.

So far I've gotten Blood West, its a kinda neat old west monster open world sorta thing.

For The Warp, a pretty fun roguelike deck builder. But, not as good as something like Slay the Spire or Monster Train.

Bird Cafe, I haven't played the release yet but I enjoyed the demo, its kind of a vn and kind of a coffee barista simulator where the kinda coffee you make someone can change the outcome of their quest.

Steamworld Quest, a turn based card game set in the Steamworld universe. Much more fun then I expected.

Max Payne 1 and 2 bundle. I never actually played the first Max Payne and I did want a copy of 2 on steam before Rockstar pulls something.

I got TMNT: SR on sale for Switch and PS4. Final Vendetta I got on sale when it was on pre-order for Switch.

I re-bought Oblivion because I didn't feel like finding a no-CD crack for my physical copy. (My computer doesn't have any sort of external media drive.) It came with all the DLC, so at least I got something new out of it.

Not on Steam but I bought a bunch of games on sale on PS:

Headlander - a Metroidvania from Double Fine where you play a disembodied head in a 1970s sci-fi style setting. It's interesting to me because I love Double Fine's writing and sense of humor, and it's unusual (for some reason) to see a bigger studio tackle the genre instead of the usual indie Kickstarter. And much like Psychonauts the studio's adventure game roots show even against decidedly action-oriented gameplay.

Omega Strike - pixel-art Metroidvania that relies on switching characters on the fly (like Pankapu) although I don't think they complement flawlessly. One of them is superfluous against the all-rounder dude and Mr double jump. It's like a slower-paced, more tactical Metal Slug both in looks and in gameplay.

Paradox Soul - a mini-Metroidvania in the vein of Super Skelemania and Xeodrifter. UK developed, funded via Kickstarter. It's mostly a Metroid clone in both look and style but gameplay is all about shooting from cover.

The Aquatic Adventures of the Last Human - Swedish developer, also funded via Kickstarter. Title suggests a campy romp but there's something weird and creepy about who you are and whatever it is you're accomplishing by slaughtering the sealife, and there's some intricate, cryptic lore about the context as well.

I got Yakuza 7. Like a Dragon, whatever, I'm just gonna call it Y7 cause it's easier.

I've only played a few hours but its pretty fun. A homeless dude is the mage and his attack spell is chucking beans at someone so that pigeons attack them. It's delightfully absurd. Now my party is three aging NEETs(ex-cop, ex-yakuza, ex nurse) and the manager of a hostess bar. Just running around Yokohama, being modern day heroes. The JRPG turn based thing isn't really my cup of tea these days, but it kinda works okay(if albeit janky) and it allows the game to tell a story about a party of people rather than just the sole protagonist. I do miss the visceral takedowns from 0/Kiwami but this is fine too. The first few hours are a bit slow, but once the game unleashes you to freely explore Yokohama with a party, it starts to take off.

I really enjoy how they represented some of the usual JRPG tropes. You change jobs at the unemployment job center. You buy weapons at a sex shop(of course one of them is a massive 'shoulder massager'). It's like a ghetto Persona that features old people and replaces the supernatural bits with organized crime.

With Sunbreak out though, I might end up taking a break from Y7 depending on how hooked I feel and how often my friends drag me into hunts.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm looking at Assassin's Creed Odyssey and its like, 75% off and I sorta kinda want it. Like I know its gonna have AssCreed's hallmarks and shit but the temptation of functionally a branching path RPG set in Ancient Greece just really, really sounds like my bread and jam.

Nothing yet. Might pick up Hitman 3 to round out the trilogy. It's €24 right now, and I've also got about €4,5 saved up from selling steam cards, so that'd effectively be less than 20. But I also got a fair bit of backlog accumulated again, and that game goes on sale regularly, so I'm thinking on holding off. Perhaps for another sale later on, or maybe a bit deeper discount during the holidays, stretch the budget a bit farther.

A Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor & Shadow of War bundle with expansions is on a steep sale, so I'll likely get that. Maybe the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection as well for the nostalgia.

But that's probably it, nothing particularly stands out as a 'good' deal or of interest me in general. Ah well... at least my wallet won't feel too much pain this time out. :/

Metal gear rising, I'm not really into that type of gameplay but its pretty cheap so I might play it one day

Wildfire, seems like a neat concept but I'm not sure if its going to be sustainable

Spacebourne, space game are usually sorta mediocre since the barrier to making one are relatively low so I tend to buy them really cheap and pray for the best

Redo!, seems like a decent metroidvania/soul, although its apparently really short

Song conquest, wasn't really on sale and is still EA but I really like the heroes of might and magic and it look really good, my "please be good!" purchase. (I'll pimp hero's hour as a pretty fun and simple HoMM clone)

Old world, another that's not on heavy discount but I love me civ and I love me crusader kings so hopefully the two together will work

Raiders!, could be good, probably won't be, not a fan of the presentation

Crown trick, rogue like are dime a dozen on steam so I wait until there on heavy discount

Rocwood academy, was 1$ so why not

Spiritfarer, everyone gushed about that one but I'm usually not into game that try to be super sad, will see

Space haven, been in EA since forever ago but apparently the dev are still active on it so I'll give it a chance

Urtuk, kinda mount and blade/battle brother/darkest dungeon, could be fun

Turnip boy commit tax evasion, so much charm

good night knight: another EA since forever, no idea how complete it is

Disciple liberation, never played a disciple, reading review it seems like the combat system is a bit on the simplistic side

Nebbuchadnezzar, another EA so I'm probably waiting

Star dynasty, see above "I love me crusader king"

Highfleet, I have a hard time understanding how the game play but looks awesome

Dual gear, sadly looks like its an abandonware

The last spell, looks freaking awesome but another EA

Age of darkness, medieval there are billions

Banner lord, not on heavy discount and still EA

souldier, not sure why its mixed, looks like a fun metroidvania

citizen sleeper, I might grab that one, nail my kind of art style

cantata and crystal project, why you not on sale! I'd totally buy if it was even on slight discount

Got most of my games off GOG this year.

Pathfinder: War of the Rightous because I don't have enough long RPGs to play apparently.

Old World because CIv/Crusader Kings in the Ancient World sounds dope (I will not apologize). Also, as Shamus Young once opined, part of the problem Civ has is that it tries to cover Human history from the Stone age to the Near future but the mechanics really aren't built to deal with that, because the speed of movement and progress changes a lot over time and what seems balanced in early game totally feels off in the late game(or visa versa). Hopefully focusing in on a specific era makes it a lot easier to tailor the mechanics to the tech level expected. Paradox games are a bit better about this though at the price of being really hard to get into as a newcomer because of complexity and detail.

Pyschonauts 2, because it finally dropped to half price(It had been on sale multiple times but it would drop to like 47% off, just above $30 and now it's finally $30). I know it's pedantic but I'm still a little miffed at what happened with Broken Age, thus the $30 cutoff.

A bunch of flight sims for cheap-Hind, Apache Longbow, F-14 Fleet Defender, Falcon Collection.

It's probably one of the better modern AC releases I think. Though there's a noticeable jump in quality of voice acting if the woman protagonist is picked, while the other voice actor still gets to take on the role of their sibling too, so the comparison is handily provided in one playthrough. It's got a good amount of shippery going on as well.

I’ve read Surge 2 iterates on some of the issues of the original, but I’ve only played a few hours of the original myself.

Treasure of Nadia is a bit of a spiritual sequel to another naughty title, "Lust Epidemic". They are both narrative adventure games where progression is linear but feels open-ended to an extent. Basically you set your movement speed to max. and zip around a map finding shit to advance your quest, which involves the main mystery plot line as well as *ahem* extracurricular activity. Pretty titillating stuff!

I played the first Huniepop but have read the sequel was more grindy with kinda underwhelming rewards. Maybe mileage may vary though.

Interesting, I may check it out, looks like they put a decent amount of effort into the 3d.

I quite enjoyed the first one, haven't tried the second yet but I'm ok with grind. One game I enjoyed entirely too much was just mahjong with a really long grind for skimpy outfits and eventual nudity, but I did it dammit.
