Tiktok also spread a lot of COVID conspiracies uncritically. Alongside the other website social medias. Which are shared here. By you.
Huh? I never shared covid misinformation that was misinformation at the time (as many things did change over time).

Elaborate.
There's 2 studies linked in the NYPost article.

I can also tell you from personal experience that most of my friends / co-workers that are about 10 years younger than me have so many more mental health issues than friends my age do. Newest guy at work had a panic attack because my boss just answered his question of "please tell me I'm not fired" for making a pretty small mistake (I forget what it was) and my boss said "well, yes" because that's technically how to answer it and my co-worker had a panic attack. And I'm like what the fuck you worrying about, so-and-so came in an hour late and started eating breakfast and you think you're gonna get fired over some super small thing. Just take a second and think things through regardless of what it is. Hell, I usually come in 30mins late and leave an hour early because I do what I'm supposed to get done and my boss doesn't care as long as you get your shit done. My generation was the last one to not grow up with social media as MySpace was a thing for me in college, which I never joined because those webpages were so horrible to look at (half the main computer lab would be on MySpace and it was just so ugly). I just have a Facebook mainly for events and messenger (since Android group text chats are so bad) and I might post a thing like once a week at most.

It's nothing to do with the content-- the bill is open that it targets any social media company with over 1m users which is owned or "influenced" by China, Cuba, Russia, Venezuela, and a few other countries Marco Rubio considers dangerous. Where it was made is very much the point and its not hidden.
Any software that has China's claws in it you really shouldn't use. The content style of TikTok is the issue with it, not really the content per se but partly that too. There's a very stark difference between US TikTok and Chinese TikTok.

Yes, their lives are much more precarious than ours so they probably will have more mental health issues. The example you gave (young guy worried about losing his job) kind of supports that.

I'm going to take a stab and say you're early/mid 30s (based on you working with people ten years younger)? I'm 41 and my life is so much more stable and secure than that of a 25 year old (and it was at 25 too, because I'd already been able to buy a house because you could do that then and I wasn't living one grumpy landlord away from homelessness).

OK, but the content issue is not related to this bill.

I do tend to try to avoid apps/programs with shady data-harvesting red flags. I refused to get the UK government's promoted "contact tracing" app, for instance, because they handed the contract to an unqualified mate of theirs, and the Tory party had very recently been shown to be involved with shady data harvesters during the EU Referendum.

Ah so just a case of "racist yell at foreigner" then.
Pretty much. It's Rubio, after all. I doubt there's any expectation that this will pass; it's just dog-whistling.

Hard disagree with people hating on Tik Tok.

Try doing that on youtube without an internet hate mob of young men, or Instagram without people judging her on her looks.

Which is precisely why I am not bothering to be up in arms about this despite it being a clear violation of First Amendment rights. It's not going to go anywhere and that's obvious, so why get upset about it?

Based on the grouping of generalisations I am getting the impression most knowledge here begins and ends with "It's a social media platform". So yeah @meiam you are correct, lots of 'get off my lawn you damn kids' is going on.

I honestly don't get the point to tictoc when youtube exists. Is it liked because it's easier to record a video on it with your phone or what? I can only see it being liked if you are someone who is new at having access to the internet and just never used any website before, and also doesn't have a pc but just a phone, and in that sense I guess I can see why some would gravitate towards it. All it is is a more limited and less feature-rich version of youtube. In china where a lot of people are super poor and only have phones but no computer or internet lines it can flourish but here I don't see why you wouldn't just go to youtube.

But yeah all that aside you obviously wouldn't wanna ban it, that's idiotic.

I don't do social media.

But i am somewhat hard pressed to find reasons why one is that much more dangerous than the other. All the big ones have piled up scandals about mishandling data or other shady business. And the small ones likely only didn't get the attention or scrutiny.

TikTok’s speech isn’t going to be the issue of argument, who owns it and where it’s data goes will be. Totally different set of rules and standards to meet.

And yes, Apple, Microsoft, Google and Facebook are all saying “Do not look at the man behind the curtain”.

Social media has been used as a tool of social activism, spreading news and information that otherwise people would miss, or to straight up organising protests. Yeah, they have their flaws, but I'd not want to see them all disappear.

There's a common denominator between those countries that I don't think you thought very hard about.
The US has a bigger incarcerated population than China and both quite clearly are doing it on racial lines. They both have massive propoganda machines including the news and both collecting extraordinary amount of data on citizens and foreigners. Eg. The US has three massive satellite flying directly over China, Russia and the Middle East so they can steal as much info as possible

I can say that the US is better than China. Does not mean they are good here

I don't want the CCP to be in control of Tiktok. I think it's a terrible idea. I dont want it to go to the US either so the GOP or DNC can get their hands on it. They fail their own country regularly and have their finger on the invasion trigger all the time. They will literally make up evidence to invade/assassinate presidents

Younger people tend not to us Facebook, either

You gotta understand, all these companies base everything in identity politics. They suckered us in with a certain identity and thinking that it's based on features won't convice people. They were suckered in by a different set of identity politics

This is not meant to stop you using whatever social media you are using. Using logic isn't going to work as logic isn't what we based our purchase of social media companies

WTF does that have to do with what I said? My comment is specifically against the damn stupid use of "bluuurgh.... racism, hate foreigners" shit that people throw out without thinking about whether it makes any damn sense to use it. Or do all of you think "socialist" is a fucking race now? Cause I'll tell ya, it ain't. So maybe just respond to what I said, like I responded to what HE said, instead of getting all gassed up to talk about shit I didn't bring up. We cool?

Zuck the Corporate cuck is likely dancing in whatever hell his metaverses exist in right now.

Here's my advice to people who shouldn't use tik tok.

Do you work in the following?

Local, state, or federal government?

Contractor for the above government?

Critical private industry or academic researcher(semiconductors, Quantum computing, ETs/emerging technologies)?

Don't use tik tok.

Or are you a wagie like me who works a job? Use Tik tok if you like it.

Like I am one of two people at my workplace that uses tik tok, and while I am not a fan of authoritarian governments, I am not going to be a politician or dissenter. So if the CPC or CCP finds out where I am they aren't going to want to blackmail me about liking some E-girls outfit on Tik Tok.

Like I work somewhere where it's not critical for national security even tho we use to be a federal contractor. I legit asked my boss are you okay with me having my device with tik tok where I do my work email, my boss says yes Facebook, and Google also steals data. That person doesn't care, on your free time ask your employer or supervisor or higher up about this, but they likey would have already told you if it was. 95 to 98% of people don't need to care if the Chinese government will blackmail them.
