But you see its all about applying engine power at the right moment so the weight transfer helps the car to accelerate and carry speed through the corner and clearly that it is a very manly skill that I'm awesome at and everyone notices and is amazed and impressed by it.

Bloody hoon!

It was 80 degrees today. I went to the beach and wore shorts.

The entire next week is supposed to be rainy though, so I guess the entire country is suffering in some way. I'll have to wash my car afterward.

I try to acknowledge other people driving well at least in my own mind. Cause like, the people you think are idiots probably are, but it takes more conscious effort to notice people being smart. The other day in the snow on a flat, straight road, the guy behind me was keeping pace at like 50mph, but when we approached the downhill part, he backed off a couple hundred feet, and I was appreciative of the mindful driving.
Very wise. Also, that attitude is essential, I find, in customer service, most people aren't painfully thick, it's just the ones that choose to be stick with you and can ruin your day.

Colour me shocked.
Someone blowing through a stop sign running from the cops shows I'm a bad driver? The guy hit 2 other people running from the cops during the chase.

Never underestimate the lengths an inner narrative will go to to compensate for an otherwise allpervasive crushing sense of inferiority.
Just testing the conditions on the road at a place that I know if I slide, I'm not hitting someone. That safe place usually ends up being an empty corner (or a multi-lane street) so how am I "showing off" and "impressing" others? I do that so if I do slide when I'm not expecting to (which will happen to everyone at some point), I have a decent gauge of how bad/not bad the slide will be. The more you do something, you know, the better you get at things... If you drive so carefully slow that you very rarely slide, how are you gonna have the ability and confidence to get out of a slide when you have to?

---

I'll ask the following question to everyone here. What is the very 1st thing you should do when your car starts sliding in the snow? Very simple question that I'm guessing most won't know the answer to.

Turn into the slide, IIRC.

(I've not seen snow since I was about 8 years old, and don't own a car, so I'm not too worried about being completely wrong here)

I was fully talking on my own behalf only there.

Yes, but it's not the 1st step.
Something to do with gradually easing off engine power, not suddenly and certainly not applying brakes

If you're skidding to the right you put your foot out the driver-side* door to the ground so the car has something to pivot around. If you're skidding to the left you just hope you have a passenger.

* In the UK, accounting for the Coriolis force.

Australia doesn't get snow widespread enough for that to be a tested skill BUT assuming that a heavy rain is an acceptable substitute - and I don't mind being wrong here - my first instinct is to remove my foot from the accelerator and shift down to try and bring my speed down before turning into the slide. Now technically in automatics that's harder to do but luckily I have one of those stupid semi-auto transmissions so I can bring it down a few gears. But no brakes, at least not unless I'm certain the consequences of using them is worse than NOT using them.

Ah, then I would suggest feet off the accelerator and the brakes (though with ABS the latter

I thought that might be at after they said turning in wasn't, but got the impression they were looking for something more. Though, with modern anti-lock brakes, do you still have to keep off the brakes?

As an Australian, I worry that this once in a generation, worst in our lifetime weather event will be repeated in a few years time.
Then you'll have the status-quo warriors saying "yeah it happens every year stop being an alarmist about perfectly normal weather."

No, other things show you're a bad driver.
Like never causing an accident and being in the lowest possible risk tier for insurance shows I'm a bad driver?

Simply just release your foot/feet from the pedals, you don't want to be adding any additional force vectors (whether braking or accelerating) as you're trying correct the slide as you're just gonna be making it harder on yourself. I asked the question because it's super simple thing to know with experience and something you probably won't find from googling as you'll just find the generic turn into the slide advice.

Correct, simply remove your foot/feet from the pedals, it's something most people don't do and they panic pressing pedals. And also something you won't find googling it or a question on a drivers test; the test does have the question about turning into the slide though. To me that question is kinda pointless because if you're actually thinking about which way to turn the wheel as you're sliding, then you're already in a pretty bad spot because it's something you just have to know out of instinct.
