Looks like they're straying away from the original game's identity and going down the ordinary AAA route of:

1) hold down button to progress through thing
2) sneak behind back for instakill
3) slow down to a crawl whenever you get a phonecall

Like, in the original game you jump out a window and start blasting. Here it's all of the above, THEN start blasting.

I guess I appreciate you can switch weapons on the fly now, though I never had that much of a problem with having to go back to the inventory.

1) hold down button to progress through thing
RE7, RE8, RE2Remake and RE3Remake had these as well. At least with REmake2, these were kept to a minimum.

2) sneak behind back for instakill
I don't why you're surprised with this. Stealth was established in the first trailer. The stealth looks like it's borrowing from Evil Within. Which is filled with so much irony. I don't see this as bad thing. Capcom did state that they're going for a more grounded approach. So it should not be that surprising. You don't have to use stealth, but it does help, if you want to conserve some resources. Evil Within 2 got this right, and I know REmake4 has got this in the bag.

Hey @Chimpzy & @CriticalGaming, you can Van Damme roundhouse kick Ganado heads and make them explode again!

3) slow down to a crawl whenever you get a phonecall
I admit these I am not gonna care too much about either on repeat playthroughs. REmake 2 & 3 had these with the radio chatter, but I know there weren't too many of them. More so with 2.

So now the inspiration is copying the imitators. They've got Evil Within's stealth and Dead Space's stomp. Who are they gonna copy next? My main concern is what are they going to have that's actually new?

There's already plenty new, and more they don't want to reveal early.

  • You have the knife parry. Leon can also parry with his kick.
  • Leon can stab enemies on the ground. This is technically not new as Chris and Sheva could do this in RE5.
  • The knife can be upgraded several times.
  • A new heavy enemy.
I am sure there will be more they want players to discover for themselves when the game launches.

They've got Evil Within's stealth
RE: Revelations 2 has some stealth elements built into the game. Shinji Mikami did contract work on the game, and it shows bigtime. Many of Rev2's enemy design look like hold overs and modifications from Evil Within 1.

Dead Space's stomp
Sebastian could stomp on The Lost in Evil Within 2 via button prompt, if he shot them to knock the freaks on their backs or kneecapped them and they face plant. This isn't the first time an RE protag could stomp on an enemy either. The PSX trilogy would have the characters stomp/kick off the zombie's head, when grabbed and the player button mashes. Something that was sorely lacking and missed in the REmake2&3.

Though I was hoping that they would leave RE4 alone (skip the re-make treatment entirely for that one and just move on to RE5) since it remains an infinitely repayable and damn-close-to-flawless game; I honestly dig everything they've shown so far!

One nitpick: Leon and Ashley look kinda too similar to each other with the new models, same hair color and hair style... Are they supposed to be cousins now lol?

Maybe its just me, but Mad World looks better. That stylized comic book look is instantly recognizable as Mad World. The only recognizable element in the REmake footage is Chainsaw Man. The rest might as well be a Far Cry cutscene.

Plus a parry. Really? With a handgun? Why would that have even crossed his mind? Duck, roll forward right. dive out right. Take it and reload from the last save. All much better responses than parry with a handgun.

I appreciate the Mad World love. By the way, Leon is actually parrying with his knife, not his handgun. Think of it as a get out of jail free card. There are lots of things you can use with the knife now. The more the knife is used or the more you counter and attack with it, the weapon will degrade over time. Going to the merchant can either repair the knife or upgrade towards the durability to last longer. I welcome this new edition. Adds an extra layer and strategy for risk and reward.

Ahhh, it's got Blazing Saddles quickdraw physics... got it.

I don't mind the addition of some weapon degradation, survival/horror generally has limited resources as a hook. RE4 however did not. Even in the first playthrough, I finished it with boatloads of ammo. That could add something. The question I keep coming back to with the RE4 remake though is... why. The reason I'm not going to buy it, I still have the original. It isn't going anywhere, I'll happily replay it. I usually do so every other year or so. I can't think of any added feature, even ones that might add to the experience, that might make me want to shell out for a remake. It is kind of like RE2 and 3's remake, on my radar if I can get it in a 5 or 10 dollar sale. For me, RE4 is like someone asking if I'd rather watch Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho... or Gus Van Sant's Psycho remake. I didn't have a particular problem with the remake, in fact... Vince Vaughn's Norman Bates exceeded every single expectation I had. And its in color. With better sound quality. And visual quality. But if both are next to each other in an on-demand menu... I'm not clicking Van Sant's.

You should already know the answer to that. It's not that hard to figure out. People kept buying RE4 on all platforms. People kept asking and demanding for an RE4 remake for years on it. Whether they admitted it or not. Capcom originally didn't even want to do a remake of RE4, but the demand was too high and people keep buying copies of the original game. RE4 makes money. It makes lots of money. Capcom likes making money.

I don't mind the remake, because I don't have much love for the original. I hate the QTES, and I hate how the over the shoulder works. Plus, the pacing just doesn't do it for me. I know it's a case of first of its kind and all that. I was there back when I was 15 when it launched. So I know all the details. I like being able to move and shoot at the same time. It's why I enjoy games like RE2 Remake, Evil Within 2, Dead Space, and Shadows Of The Damned so much.

That's not exactly it though. If it was just demand and money, port it again. Its why they ported it to PS2 after it launched as a Gamecube exclusive. Then Wii, then PS3 and XBOX 360, and PC (and Android and VR and whatever else.) If they want to do a little cosmetic upgrading, slap it with remaster instead of remake (or go with Skyrim's Special, Anniversary, or whatever "version" or "edition" you want to saddle it with.) You could even make some minor changes and manage to keep it RE 4. Ratchet down the QTE difficulty (I particularly hated the knife fight, I just wanted to watch that as a cutscene,) add a feature where Leon could fire while backpedaling... little stuff like that wouldn't matter. It'd probably still only be of passing interest to me, but still fine. I just don't like the idea of full on remake. Why call it RE 4, if It winds up not looking anything like RE 4? Or if they make drastic changes to the story or completely different gameplay? At that point make a new game, change the names, and if anyone questions similarities to RE 4 say it was "inspired" by RE 4. Hell, I'd probably be interested in buying that. Or a remaster for a newer platform, I did buy the PC version after all.

Now, to be fair. I am buying this remake. Just not for me. My niece never played RE 4 and this remake will make a nice gift for her. All her friends play is Fortnite or trendy MMO garbage, and I'm trying to introduce her to more classic style games for her to enjoy. Basically like her dad constantly exposing her to 60's, 80's, and 90's rock so she doesn't just listen to top 40 girl pop. It's going well. She loved Bioshock and Shadow of the Colossus. And then when her friends started trying to get her into MOBAs, she found them boring and kept coming to me for recommendations and to borrow retro consoles.

Same difference. Highly popular game gets demands for ports each new console generation, because people keep buying it, and Capcom likes money.

No, that was more so because even though RE4 was the best of the Capcom Five Four, it still didn't make the amount of cash that Capcom wanted. They pretty much went behind Mikami's back on that one (I can't exactly get mad at Capcom for that). Not to mention, sales weren't exactly that good for RE1 Remake on GC and worse. Ironic, because the PS2 port of RE4 is actually considered the worst of the console ports by the early to mid 2010s. Other than the Zeebo version, but that doesn't count.

That's what the HD remasters on PC and consoles were, but Capcom chose to do nothing and leave thing as they were. Aside from adding bonus content from the PS2 and Wii versions. I am sure people wouldn't have minded the gameplay changes and improvements, but certain others would have complained. Not that I care for the latter.

Why call it RE 4, if It winds up not looking anything like RE 4? Or if they make drastic changes to the story or completely different gameplay?
Because it's a remake and re-imagining. That's how remakes usually work when it involves Capcom. Plus, they already kinda remade RE4 with RE VIII, but it's in first person (3rd person was later added as a free update and in the Gold Edition) and Universal monsters. Too bad I don't care for Ethan Winters much, and RE4Remake is coming out soon, so I rather play that instead. And if you wanna really go far back, Evil Within was basically an RE4 Remake, but combined with The Cell. Besides, like I told you before, RE4 made all that money and kept getting ported over and over, because people keep buying it. And people demanded or wanted a remake at some point. This became especially true after RE2Remake. The Remake I look forward to because they're doing something different and adding better and improved mechanics I like. There's always the original, but I don't have the fevered love for it that many have or go overboard with. I've played RE2Remake and Evil Within 2 more times than I care to count compared to my two playthroughs of RE4.

Now, to be fair. I am buying this remake. Just not for me. My niece never played RE 4 and this remake will make a nice gift for her. Excellent, and I hope you both enjoy and have fun. If she enjoys it, I do recommend RE2 Remake, both Evil Within games (though I prefer the sequel), and get her started on some brawlers, if she's interested. Streets of Rage 4 is my highest recommendation, along with the Takeover in all things brawler. Though, The Takeover isn't on Series X or XBONE, if she only has one of those two.

I am cautiously optimistic. This does look good, and I like that Luis is getting a larger role. Here's hoping he survives. And honestly the redesign of Ashley not to be wearing a miniskirt is just fine with me.

This game is going to be great. I have nothing to be cautious about. Capcom knows what they're doing. I love the change up of the minecart section.
