3) Finally if Gwen's character is supposed to relate to the real world - where there are serious mental and physical considerations in order to try to change from a man to a woman - then you'll have to look elsewhere for a trans character.
Nah.

Anyway, cackling at this

Imagine being so fragile that Barbie having Gender Themes feels like betrayal. Like, I get that hard-core Christians have a parallel economy going on, but Barbie started with gender themes.

Republicans = lethal imbeciles. Not much else to say. People who vote for republicans should just curl up in shame as the world burns. But they won't. Even if we go through that crisis (and I we, I mean, the next couple of generations or more), they'll still feel proud of themselves at the other end.

“It was ‘I am going to kill you’ written in a very deliberate way in a long letter and followed by obsessive emails,” said Gloninger. His critic demanded that he “go the hell back to where you came from DOUCHEBAG!!!” and demanded “what’s your home address, we conservative Iowans would like to give you an Iowan welcome you will never forget.” The emails attacked Gloninger for pushing a “liberal conspiracy theory on the weather”, calling climate change a “Biden hoax”.

Dunno. I always had the impression that Barbie was a very conservative, normative toy. The ideal stepford wife model. the pink toy for the girls, the look-how-blonde-you-should-be, etc. I suspect they are right to consider that film a betrayal. But again, I haven't seen it, I just have positive expectations from some indirect hints and descriptions.

I mean, I get the desire for it to be unassailable canon. Bridget Guilty Gear still has people saying she isn't actually/shouldn't be transgender despite her turning to the camera and saying she's a girl, followed by the devs turning to the camera saying she's a girl, based entirely on the fact that her old lore didn't say she was transgender and her announcement didn't spoil her arcade story. Some people are just thick like that

Veering into hot take territory, I firmly believe that the current inability to have any ambiguity without controversy and there needing to be a strict canon at all times is down to test based educational policies (No Child Left Behind) where there can be only one correct answer, and Cinamasins style "criticism" becoming popular. The movie can only have One Correct Interpretation and anything else is just a fan theory lest it get a ding and be considered a plot hole

I think it's down to people being fed the fuck of the whole "Ours now" culture war aspect.

E.G. the reaction of some fans (and some of the creators of) the new She-Ra where they called previous incarnations fans awful and toxic and said they weren't wanted anymore.

Same with shit like "The Force is Female" campaign which even if she didn't specifically run it Kathleen Kennedy did join in with it.

It's become about groups acting like dragons sitting on and hoarding properties and attacking anyone who does suggest sharing it unless it's on the explicit grounds that people accept said terms etc, often when it wasn't even the original fans for the most part now claiming to own it or setting the terms.

As identity has been pushed stronger in culture and social spaces people care more for and focus on their identity. Plus the push for visibility means many people vying to try and "claim" popular things.

See the push to make James Bond a woman, or black, where the last big push to make James Bond a Woman was happening when Atomic Blonde came out in cinemas and barely broke even. For those pushing for woman James Bond it wasn't about a female lead spy series otherwise they'd have gone to see Atomic Blonde and potentially we'd have Atomic Blonde 2 by now. No it was about claiming said popular franchise name for themselves basically to spite others and go "It's ours now and you can't stop us doing whatever we want with it".

To circle this back to Spier-Gwen.

There's literally a fucking giant multiverse of possibilities but no apparently the Gwen people actually like and has landed well with audiences is suddenly the person being claimed as Trans. Not "Somewhere in the Spiderverse there is a Trans Gwen Spiderwoman" no it's "This exact version of Gwen the one we know from the film and is popular is trans and that being trans applies to all versions of her in all cannon".

To an extent I can see where people are coming from because they're being told it's super important they be represented in media and that representation shows they matter. On the other hand it's fucking stupid to watch this stuff go down from people trying to claim Samus Aran is trans to now Spider Gwen. Especially in the face of some series trying to introduce trans characters to actually give that representation and those groups are ignore *Cough* character in CWs Supergirl who is a Trans woman hero *Cough* and the worst part is just how nasty it gets to people who dare challenge said claims to characters and or franchises.

They're full of hate for a world that refuses to allow them their fantasies. "We can do whatever we want to the world and everything will be okay because God loves only us and made this world for us to exploit."
It's new age evangelical death cult stuff. If *I'd* thought god had given me dominion over something, I'd probably try to show I could do a good job with it by not burning it to the ground. Like, I'd try to make it the best version of itself, you know?

This Arizona republican debate should be preserved for all history. Not only for entertainment, there's artistic value to be gained, plus it is intensely Verhoevenian.

Remember when weirdos said that Disney was buying tickets to the "woke" MCU movies to artificially inflate the box office?

Anyway
Oh they're pretty open about it too.

ezgif.com-webp-to-png-66.jpg

With a scene at the end of the film having Caveziel literally tell the audience if they care and want to help with (child) sex trafficking, buy more tickets...get everyone you know to see the movie too! Not a single mention of other real world contributions, nope. Just see this film more and children will be saved lord jaysus! I could go into how the main big boi Tim Ballard has a bit of a Mormon indoctrination ideology fueling all this too, but really there's so much dodgy stuff already that it's unlikely to be a sticking point for anyone interested at this point in time.

Tho if context is desired for why such distrust;

As VICE News has previously reported, a number of OUR’s claims about its work are dramatically overstated or without clear documentary evidence. People who have volunteered for OUR have raised concerns that it could actually have been creating demand for trafficking victims, by going to foreign countries on undercover “missions” that, at times, have seemed to consist of walking around bars and sex clubs asking for underage girls. The organization's support for law enforcement has at times been wildly exaggerated and involved OUR taking credit for agencies’ operations after making relatively trivial donations, and its much-touted aftercare program for survivors has at times involved things like placing women with unqualified providers and even fabricating a college graduation ceremony.

In another story uncovered by VICE News, OUR heavily marketed its role in the rescue of “Liliana,” a young trafficking survivor, with Ballard telling a fanciful story about this rescue in Congressional testimony and in op-eds and media appearances in which he called for a border wall. She in fact rescued herself, and did not meet OUR representatives until years after she’d done so, when she was preparing to testify against her traffickers in court. The organization led a bizarre, blundering attempted rescue on the Haiti-Dominican Republic border based on intelligence sourced from a Utah psychic medium. (The same psychic went on to work as an executive director for an OUR-backed group, an adoption grant organization called Children Need Families, founded by Ballard’s wife Katherine.) Meanwhile, OUR’s sister organization the Nazarene Fund, founded by right-wing media personality Glenn Beck, claimed without a lot of direct evidence to have evacuated endangered people from minority religious groups out of Afghanistan during the chaotic period after the U.S. withdrawal from the country. And in a more minor, and weirder, incident, Ballard recently claimed that OUR was “collaborating” with American Airlines, which was also not true in the sense that most people would understand it; the organization bought an ad with a third-party service that airs programming on some American flights.

These incidents, and many others, added up to a pattern of misrepresentation and exaggeration that even some OUR “operators”—the men who went on purported rescue missions in other countries—told VICE they found disturbing and misleading.
Oh also it's a "non-profit" which are supposed to be apolitical to receive tax free status, and, well, they're anything but.

Oki might as well throw it all in before the post edit option locks me out...

At an August 2019 meeting, Tim Ballard laid out his vision for the future. On a whiteboard, a diagram showed how he’d build his empire as a public speaker, anti- trafficking advocate, and proselytizer for his Mormon faith. “Take sizzle of the Rescue,” it read, amid a thicket of arrows connecting his for-profit and nonprofit entities to one another. “Lead them to the Covenant.”

Because even fucking Moviebob in the past admitted there was a growing new industry in hollywood for PR companies who claimed to specialise in "Managing fan reaction online" and many of these did it by along with being some of the most awful toxic trolls they spent chunks of the PR budget buying out cinemas and then posting about how x film had sold out the cinema.

The difference with Sound of Freedom?

They're not hiding it
It's literally a film that's 1/10th or less of the size of big studio films doing this so I am not going to be mad about a smaller studio trying to do this.

This isn't "You hate America if you don't go see American Sniper." Nor is it "You're a racist who hates black people if you don't go see Selma."

It's fucking weird to me too how one side seem so angry and against a film that is about a series issues like child exploitation and trafficking. What are they doing it the wrong way because Captain America doesn't burst through the fucking wall or something now?

This is like being bewildered that Jews might object to blood libel propaganda.
"But sacrificing people to use their blood in rituals is bad, why would you object to something exposing that?"

You are correct: it *is* about serious issues like child exploitation and trafficking. And it's fucking it up by pushing Qanon bullshit

And it's very much "if you don't like how this movie is bullshit, you're a pedophile", so don't even start

After facing allegations that AMC, in an apparent bid to…not make money?… had disrupted showtimes, canceled screenings, and even deliberately broken its own air conditioners to drive people away from the movie, the chain’s CEO, Adam Aron, issued a statement this week on Twitter. Aron wrote that “Sadly, conspiracy theorists are so prevalent in America. So much garbage information is spread. More than ONE MILLION people have watched Sound Of Freedom at AMC Theatres. More than at any other theatre chain on the planet. Yet people falsely claim otherwise. It is so bizarre.”

Angel Studios issued its own statement in an effort to convince people that, at least in this one particular case, their paranoid instincts about shadowy cabals arrayed against them were not actually correct, writing that “AMC has been an outstanding partner for Angel Studios.” Studio exec Brandon Purdie also tacitly asked fans to not be, y’know, psychopaths, writing that, “We ask that anyone attending a screening of Sound Of Freedom show kindness to their local theater staff.”

It would be really cool if Qanon got rid of sex trafficking. Unfortunately, they are too far up to their own asses to actually find evidence and just make up nonsense to make themselves feel better.

Hey, Qanon, go tackle OUR. That would cure a lot of sex trafficking

You know how you get cranky at 'woke'. Well, this movie is THE example of that.

It's about company and a main character that fakes being for social justice to score money and political capital and usually causes the problems it pretends to solve

Burn in hell Jim Caviezel. You are not 'Jesus', nor never will be. Stop pretending otherwise, you hypocritical fuckhead.

Glad to see someone actually take responsibility and try not to make things worse for everyone.

The 40-year-old broadcaster and self-styled voice against ‘woke’ culture – whose show Dan Wootton Tonight is the biggest ratings winner on the UK’s fourth-most watched news channel – targeted journalistic colleagues, friends and members of the public for at least 10 years.

Byline Times has extensive evidence to show that, between June 2008 and 2018, Wootton – who is gay – posed as a fictitious showbusiness agent called “Martin Branning” to offer sums of up to £30,000 “tax free” to his targets, many of whom were heterosexual men.

Among them are a very senior executive at Rupert Murdoch’s News UK alongside at least six other staff at The Sun newspaper – one with close links to News UK CEO Rebekah Brooks – friends, Facebook associates and users of the dating apps Grindr and Gaydar.

Two of the targets made criminal complaints to Scotland Yard without knowing the real identity of their tormentor with detectives aware of the activities of Branning – whose name is a portmanteau of EastEnders characters Martin Fowler and Max Branning – since 2019.
