These people really need to sit down and read a book. Yasuke did actually exist, and showed up in Ni-Oh (boss fight) and is playable in Samurai Warriors 5. For all their claims about being actual real/true GAMERS. You would think they would know that.
I don't think they're questioning whether he existed, but rather whether he was a samurai.

From what I know, he was a "retainer" to Oda Nobunaga but there's actually no evidence that he was ever officially a "samuari" in rank and status. There's no historical writings that confirm that he was actually a samuari and not just a servant to Nobunaga.

We do know that he did at least have a short sword, which was given to him by Nobunaga after he received Yasuke from the missionaries, and I believe there's some reference to him fighting for Nobunaga, or after Nobunaga's death.

Essentially we don't really know all that much about Yasuke because he doesn't show up in historical records much, other than just being referenced as an oddity who accompanied Nobunaga. He's a cool and interesting figure though, so pretty much everything about him in games and other media gets made up to make him look cooler. There isn't anything wrong with that though, it happens to pretty much every historical figure (even the ones we know a lot about). It's a little silly to get mad about him being depicted as a samurai given that we don't have specific evidence that he wasn't a samurai.

They don't give a shit, nor care which accurate title. They're upset, because he's black man in a lead role. Once again, these are fools who don't want to see us or those of dark skinned race and not be victims, background characters, nor negative stereotypes. You know this.

Well, Ubi need to have people spending money on the hex store!
And on top of that:

So yeah, the little interest I had in the game is now dead.
My interests died too.

I groaned when I saw Yasuke. This game is so clearly just another Valhalla. What the fuck could their dynamic possibly be? Why even have an assassin when some gigantic fucking samurai is going to rampage through everything anyway? Yeah, yeah, no gameplay yet... But nothing in this trailer makes me optimistic.

The one thing that this game can offer that Ghost doesn't do is more verticality in the game world since presumably there are actual cities, but that doesn't sound too enticing given how ass the stealth in AC games have been.

Wow finally some news....bad news...but it's news.
More than likely most critics are gonna like this game. Most people love the first game on both ends. Sucks that the embargo's the same day as the release day. The article says it's to avoid spoilers but that hasn't stopped anyone before.

That's certainly possible. It might also be the case that they don't want people talking about the game before release because it's ass. We've seen this happen time and time again with "release date" embargos. There is no confidence in this game from Xbox at all otherwise they'd be pushing the game, and hell they've not sent reviews codes as if at least yesterday.

Could the game be great? Sure. But all signs point towards the opposite.

If AC Shadows was released before the whole DEI/PC surge, I'm pretty sure no one would care, (not to this extent, at least) and be more excited about AC game finally coming to Japan. Maybe everyone is tired of DEI being part of the gaming experience (admittingly me as well), but that feeling is fueling their rage.

I'd argue we should be more angry about the crappy business model of this game and SW: Outlaws, but that's just for the small number of us I guess.

As for the Hellblade 2 review embargo, yeah I really have no idea what's going on either. I mean it's the only one of many signs that the game will suck; There was no delay, no overpromising, of contents, no live-service roadmap, no forced online connection, and basically anything but the review embargo.

Then again, we barely got any news or marketing about the game, so I guess no news is good news?

Here's the most information I can find. One thing I do know that has change is that most of the battles are one on one now. Enemies have more attacks and evasive maneuvers.

To be fair, as far as Japanese history goes, Yasuke is kind of a background character. I don't mind him being an important character in a game, I actually really liked how he was presented in Nioh.

It is a little weird to have him in the lead role for the game, especially because as far as I know, all of the Assassin's Creed protagonists are made up fictional characters who just interact with historical figures. I'm not sure why this time around they would choose to have a real historical figure in the lead role. I'm also not sure how much I trust Ubisoft with their portrayal of him, especially if it's going to be what's holding up the whole game.

And I think you know that I actually do really like Yasuke as a character. You and I had discussions about him when that Netflix anime came out, and how much I hated his portrayal in that show because I think that his life story is super interesting in itself without having to jam magical robots and bullshit into it.

I guess they decided it was time for a change up. This one I don't mind. Plus, you can play as two different characters with two different play styles. Also, Naoe Fujibayashi is the fictional daughter of historical ninja Nagato Fujibayashi. So there ya go. Song long as they actually try this time, I'll consider it after a price drop and a possible gift card around the holidays.

I have not forgotten. Now you don't have to worry about that in an AC game. Aside from maybe a possible "let's do a no fucks give fun bonus mode/non-canon DLC". I still enjoyed the anime, but I have no need to see it again at the moment.

It seems Japanese gamers are especially pissed off with Ubisoft's decision. And that's fair honestly, if an AC game was set in my country and for some reason I was playing as an American or something, I'd be quite pissed as well.

Same thoughts. Yasuke is exactly the kind of character you'd expect to be an important NPC in an AssCreed game, but to actually play as him? I wonder what they're going to do with him that made them think this was the way to go. It would have to be something truly special, because even I'd like to think Ubi wouldn't do this just to have a black dude in the game.

  1. Yasuke was of African origin, but not American.
  2. He isn't the only playable character and Naoe is an important part of the story too. They seem have an almost equal amount of screen time.
  3. None of them had a problem playing as William Adams from Ni-Oh.
  4. You all have Ghost of Tsushima, along with so many samurai/ninja games where the majority of the characters are Japanese or of Japanese descent. They literally have little to complain about, when they've had so many options for over 40 years. I hate saying that, but it is true.

  • Audience Surrogate: According to the Naoe and Yasuke trailer, Yasuke as a foreigner discovering Japan is meant to represent the player who may not necessarily be familiar with Japanese culture and history.

Interesting trivia I found:

  • Older Than They Think:
    • Shadows is not the first time the Assassin's Creed series has visited the Sengoku period, as Yamauchi Taka in Memories assassinated Oda Nobunaga to acquire his Sword of Eden during the chaos of the Honno-ji Incident.
    • This isn't the first time that an Assassin's Creed game let you play as a real-world historical figure. Syndicate's Jack the Ripper DLC let you play as the titular serial killer, whilst Odyssey opened with you playing as King Leonidas. That said, Yasuke is the first real-world historical figure to be a protagonist of a full Assassin's Creed game.
    • This isn't the first video game that introduces Yasuke. He first appeared in Nobunaga's Ambition as a minor vassal of Nobunaga. He showed up again in the 2017 Action RPG, Nioh, featuring another Western Samurai William Adams, the game's protagonist. Then, Yasuke becomes a playable character in the Soft Reboot Samurai Warriors 5.

1. Yes I know, I said American since they were our country's former colonizers.
2. Yes, but unlike Odyssey or Valhalla, choosing a specific character changes your gameplay. Anyone who wants to specifically be a samurai is gonna play Yasuke.
3, 4. That's fair, but given that AssCreed is a series that is almost 2 decades old and that Japan has been a highly anticipated setting for the longest time, I can't blame a Japanese fan for being disappointed. Especially when the latest AC games seem to have put in the extra effort when it comes to recreating historical periods. There's also the entire cultural significance of samurai in Japan, but I don't know enough about that to comment (and I am also likely to disagree with, I know Japan isn't exactly... accepting).

I mean, that is a reason, not a very particularly interesting one. I would hope Ubisoft would have more up their sleeves than just an Audience Surrogate.

I rather have characters that play differently than palette/model swaps. That was Syndicate's biggest flaw when it came to playing multiple characters in the same game.

suke.

I don't know they're disappointed now when the series has been disappointing since III. Black Flag aside.

A majority of the Japanese had no problems GoT criticizing the samurai class and actually applauded Suker Punch for it, among other things. What would make Ubisoft so different for them be upset on that end?

We'll have to wait and find out later.
