Side note. This is exactly the kind of thread we've been missing for a while, no politics or big ideas or analyzing the human condition, just needs debating pointless need shit!
I still do that stuff. It's just a time and a place for it. It's why I don't go to the current events thread that often. It's why I made that Ninja thread in the off topic section. Besides, you still got plenty of people that go into the share some that makes you smile or the complaining thread. You've seen many of the threads I posted, I don't get serious all the time. But when I do, it's because it's important and vital for reason. I get your point though. But if you want more of these fun threads, feel free to make some yourself. Don't wait on me or anyone else. I don't wait on anyone. If the opportunity comes up, I do it or I don't. Simple as that.

Depends on how much you read into his Alien buddy being his "buddy". No judgements. Your headcannon is your own.

<<Yo Buddy, Still alive?>>
Interestingly, the game is so old and there is another TV show of the same name, that in defiance of Rule 34, it seems I cannot find erotic fanfiction of... HAHA, just kidding:

Oh important topics are certainly worth debating, sometimes you just gotta ease off the pressure though, ya know? As for me making thread... Eh, I think I'm bad at it. I'm usually content to read what other people are saying and I feel I do better responding to someone than I do initiating a conversation. I've just noticed that a lot of threads I made a long time ago would peter out and I think it's because I didn't make a strong enough opening post and wasn't engaging people that responded enough. I guess I could try next time I think of something though.

I've made plenty of threads that have petered out or didn't stick around long. Doesn't mean I'm going to give up that easily. Sometimes I bring the thread back when something new is posted or I have more to add to the conversation. Or someone else has more to add or just wanted to do something fun.

Helpful chart:

As for video games:
Simon the Sorcerer, an old point n' click adventure game from the 90s.
Simon is litteraly some dude that finds magical wizard robes and ends up in a fantasy world.
(It also got a remaster recently, but it sucks)
By that chart’s logic, the movie “The Final Countdown” fulfils the requirements to be Isekai. And on a few different fronts. The protagonists are ostensibly normal but skilled people and they remain on the same planet but their method of travel is mysterious and never explained. However due to where they’ve shifted - the 1940s - they are grossly overpowered because they are the crew and armament of a nuclear super carrier. One memorable scene shows a Japanese Zero up against a pair of F-14 Tomcats. Gee, I wonder how that went?

My copy of El Hazard OVA 1 & 2 came in today. I have not watched either since high school. So I am getting myself ready for one of the OG Isekais. Wish me luck!

Funny enough, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins is described in the Destructoid review as "a Team Ninja action game first, and an oddball isekai story second". And yeah one can see it that way (in the same way "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" can be seen as a sci-fi movie), if you put all the disjointed narrative together you can see they resemble the outcome of an isekai story (not to mention the real plot twist).

Technically, isekai is a subtrope of Magical Otherworlds trope. What differentiates isekai is that it leans on the escapism fantasy. At least that's my opinion. Other opinions on the matter might differ, as isekai has become a generalized term for any otherworld story.

PS: That also applies to ieskais... probably.

Now and Then, Here and There is a complete deconstruction, so watch with warning. You will be depressed.
Ooh, I may have to check this one out.

as there's an obvious couple that's going to end up together.
Like how in Re: Zero the obvious couple is Natsuki Subaru and the Jealous Witch. She wouldn't have it any other way. But then I half expect eventual time travel shenanigans and for Emilia to be the Jealous Witch and the whole isekai thing being a means for the Jealous Witch to instantiate herself.

FFM: Kagome, Kikyo, and Inuyasha.
Does that count as a love triangle when it's him her and her reincarnation (so technically also her, after a fashion)?

As for why most protagonists don't try to get back to our world, "Truck-kun".
I think my favorite variation on Truck-kun is "Reincarnated as a Vending Machine, Now I Wander the Dungeon" where instead of getting a kiss from Truck-kun, Truck-kun throws a vending machine at him. Also, isekai protagonist who can only say 6 things (common Japanese vending machine one liners), and most of the challenges he faces are primarily tied to his essentially having only the powers available to a sentient vending machine that can stock itself (but only with things sold in vending machines) and having 6 stock lines with which to try to explain things. Main girl is also primary mode of transportation (she has super-strength and carries him around) and names him Boxxo because he's a giant box and can't exactly tell her his name.

I remember being too annoyed at that one to bother getting far in it. I found the main character so annoying and stupid.

Ieskai is pretty much the same thing as a white savior movie, but on the same world. .... Wait, is Avatar an ieskai... signs point to yes, thats a weird thought.

You are correct, but that's Cameron taking from John Carter and Princess Mononoke (I know it's not an Isekai, but Cameron admitted it way early where that influence came from).

Which is weird since the movie is beat for beat much closer to Dances with Wolfs then Princess Mononoke, I don't know John Carter aside from a bit about the disney movie from a few years(10?) ago.

Isekai just means you have a char from the real world being transported to some other world. That's what the term means; "other/different world". It doesn't need to be orthodox fantasy or a dragon quest parody with slimes and the demon overlord to be isekai, and the protag doesn't need to be OP or have a harem either. In fact, Re:Zero, one of the best isekai, has a pathetic protagonist who dies all the time, and his power is just reviving a bit before dying at a "checkpoint" and remembering how he died, and trying to not die this time around, over and over until he manages to reach a new checkpoint.

Some older stuff which is Isekai but people didn't term it as such:

Alice in Wonderland

Magical Knight Rayearth

Inuyasha

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

Digimon

Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi/Spirited Away

Its a fish out of water story. The main difference is the fantasy element.

Fish out of water is like a larger group , and then the more specific subgroup is isekai, but I assure you, you can have fish out of water stories within fantasy and have it not be isekai. But yeah the new mysterious transfer student is an age old trope in anime stuff and a classic fish out of water setting too.

Also not all isekai are fish out of water, sword art online is about a fish in water. Cause the protag is a hardcore gamer who beta-tested the game before it trapped people and was familiar with it and likes the game world he's trapped in as much if not more than the real world and jives with the systems and whatnot more, and if it wasn't a death game might have chosen to live there. Which is why he's so OP and thrives when the rest of the players are struggling. In fact, the Alicization season ended with the implication that an identical AI copy of the protagonist who lived in the game world for 80some years before erasing those memories so he could go back to reality (time flowed faster in the game world so it had been only a little time by the time 80 game years passed) may side with it against the real world, which may lead into him fighting himself later on, showing you how he's a hair's breadth away from preferring that world.
