The Boys: S3:E1-6 Exhausting / Great
The 6th episode ends with Butcher, Soldier Boy, and Hughie's failed attempt to finally kill Homelander, and Starlight taking to the media to call out ALL superheroes, with Homelander being the worst of all. He's more pissed than ever, and that sent my anxiety enough through the roof; I had to take a break. I'll finish the finish the last two episodes soon enough, but right now, I just need a cocktail and to watch some Olympics, y'know, anything that doesn't feature the pissed off, psychopath god that haunt's my nightmares.

This has been an odd year.
I haven't finished Dragons and don't know if I even will. Dull, boring, don't care.
The Boys has been a favorite of mine up to season 4. The writing, minus a couple of cool things, really took a nose dive.
Stopped watch "Hacks" on HBO.
Cobra Kai Season 6 on Netflix: seems one season too many. Shoulda quit while ahead last season. Not horrible... just feels more like nostalgia, this time for seasons 1-5 rather than the 1980s movies.
And now the Bear on Hulu. I watch with my daughter who doesn't appear to feel like watching the rest of season 3. She (and I to a lesser extent) think it meandering this season.
Maybe I'm just getting old(er) and grumpy(er).

Yeah, we're still struggling to finish The Bear. We both have loved it thus far, but watching any series with my gf is like pulling adult teeth from across the room with greased-up chopstick. She'll watch like 2-3 episodes, and say "that's enough; let's save some more for when there's nothing else on," then the moment there's "nothing else on," she'll be tired, won't want to get intrigued/invested at the moment, and just want to watch a movie she can fall asleep to. What's worse is when we finally DO pick up a series again that she'd basically let rot in the sun, I have to spend the first new episode explaining all the backstory she'd forgotten, and that's IF I remember it myself!
Thankfully, The Boys is something I know for a fact she wouldn't enjoy, so despite my taking my own time due to its stress-inducing nature, I don't have to wait for her. When I started it while she was out of town, I was sure to tell her about the ultra-violence, gratuitous sex, and downright terrible people involved and he awful shit they do, and she nope'd out immediately. As happy as I was to not have to wait to watch the next episodes, I'm sadly watching it alone, and my new fear of Homelander and the complete lack of anyone to turn to to validate and converse over the pure horror I experience makes it a tough watch. I'll get through it, though!
I'm finally watching Squid Game. Part of it was me willing to tolerate a limited series instead of one more "4 to 5 seasons" of TV that runs out of steam by 3.
(Ironically I now learn a second season is dropping December, and a third one next year. Gah!)
I was left very underwhelmed by pretty much every new season of every long-form series this year. Too much wheel-spinning. Season 2 of Invincible, Reacher and HotD wasted all the good will that I had for their remarkable first seasons. Reacher went from charmingly dumb to monotously dumb, Invincible didn't go anywhere exciting and HotD was a waste of time: two years' wait topped by a shorter, slower season that was all buildup and no payoff. Same with S4 of The Boys, where the overarching plot always moves forward about 15% in the first episode and 85% in the last, and the juicy middle is filled up with, uh, filler.
But yeah, Squid Game. Saw meets Fall Guys. Andross from Star Fox hosts.

It was a decent show. It managed to pretty effectively create a sense of tension. You'll immediately know when it peaks and you'll probably see the villain reveal coming.
Advanced warning, before you go through Season 4 of The Boys you kind of need to watch Gen V to understands a couple of bits of it so I'd advise watching that.
Rewatching Dexter after it hit Netflix, with the recent news of an origin series and another seemingly improbable sequel. It’s one of those shows that’s both weighty in subject matter and light in tone, which makes for a decent nightcap. Wife and I originally binged it about ten years ago but now only have time for maybe a couple episodes a night. Just started season five.
I think in some ways it peaked at the last couple episodes of the fourth season, but I still found myself cringing at how conveniently deliberate the writing became to get there. The back half of seasons is a huge mixed bag regardless of the ending, but I did overall like Julia Stiles from season five more than Yvonne Strahovsky from seven-on, even though the latter played a bigger, far more dramatic part in the series. In between that the Doomsday shit’s only redeemable factor being by the big revelation to Deb.
That at least sets up a handful of really good episodes in season seven, but of course by season eight they were grasping at straws for where to go next. Hopefully they’ve come up with some fresh ideas for where to take these characters (and new ones) because even New Blood was mostly a bust.

The Boys: S4: E1-8: God damn it / Great
This feels very much like a series I should have waited until it's conclusion to start watching it. I'm caught up, and the dangling threads are gnawing at me.
And I've made my decision on my thoughts on Antony Starr's Homelander. I would categorize him as brilliant. This last season has shown him to be extremely powerful, extremely damaged (mentally and emotionally,) and extremely volatile, a combination which makes his every appearance on screen riddled with the kind of tension you can almost taste. Like Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter or Heath Ledger's Joker, Starr's Homelander captivates me.
I partially take back what I said above about Strahovsky playing a far more dramatic part than Stiles’ character. Maybe in terms of plot line only, since the latter was far more sympathetic otherwise. I hope there isn’t something else I’d forgotten about here, but things were kinda hazy back during the original viewings.
Kinda fascinating how just from watching random clips on YouTube, even I can tell how badly the final seasons of Game of Thrones fucked things up.

I've been rewatching a lot of Doctor Who (new Who) and the following Capaldi Doctor Who triplet of episodes is the best 3 episode block of the series. I forgot how something played out in Hell Bent and it really packs a punch. Heaven Sent is also one of the best Who episodes ever and it's literally just Capaldi talking to himself for an hour (10 minutes longer than a normal episode).

4th and final 6 rather than 10 episode season of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix.
IMDB gives the episodes the lowest scores of the show, but I think I liked it on par with Season 2 so, 1, 2 and 4, 3.
The end is satisfying but also a cop out. Gotta watch some videos for compare / contrast to the comics
Must be odd to be Aidan Gallagher. His number 5 looks a lot like Timothee Chalamet who is getting a lot of the best movie roles out there. Since they already have TC, might Hollywood ignore Gallagher? I hope not but his number 5 is one of the most fun characters I've seen in a show in some time.

The Boys - Season 4 - 4/10
I haven't felt The Boys is legit good for awhile now and Season 4 isn't good either. I feel like The Boys is just a show I watch to see what wacky stuff happens, I don't actually care about anything going on, and I forget about it almost immediately after watching. The satire is laid on so heavy and it feels so cringe, just about every issue from real life gets referenced but they just put the word "supe" in there like "Defund the Supes" and it's just so lazy. The emotional stuff is also just surrounded by so much wacky and ridiculous things, it never hits. What goes on with Hughie's dad should have an easy emotional tug but I basically felt nothing because how ridiculous it was. Then, they have jokes that go on for way too long like the Webweaver (parody Spider-man) who shoots webbing out his ass (not quite his ass but...) and they keep doing it over and over again for a joke and it's about as funny as the screaming goats from Thor 4. The one saving grace of the show is Antony Starr as Homelander and the best episode of the season was when he went to the facility where he grew up as a kid.

I agree, most everything is so on the nose and ridiculous, that it has to be intentional; I don’t think they’re trying to be clever. But I further agree that Homelander, in a vacuum, is the most intriguing character. It’s strange how the show has almost made the absolute monster that he is sympathetic? That’s never a word I’d even put on the same planet as him, but there have been moments when you can almost feel bad for him… but then he makes a man walk into a furnace and burns him alive, and you remember “oh, yeah, he’s the worst living being on the planet."
