Started playing Skyward Sword for the first time today. The Switch version.

Taking a long time to leave me alone. Even worse than Twilight Princess in that regard.
Skyward Sword has an absurd amount of introductory cutscenes. I don't think Breath of the Wild is perfect, but it was certainly refreshing they went back to a brisker introduction.

I hope you'll post a lot about your experience with this one, I'm interested to see what you think.

Something I didn't get, was the trans character's mom the "may she guide you" figure we kept seeing carved and stencilled all around, or did we never meet her?
No, you never meet her. I've seen some confusion about her and whether she's in the game, some people thinking the woman that holds the knife to Abby's gut is her. The "prophet" lady died at the hands of Isaac I think, and this then spurred the Seraphites on to start hanging and disemboweling outsiders/WLF. I think Lev mentions her death right before the "heights" sequence.

Dang I forgot all about the trans kid in LOU2. I generally fit in to the "idc" camp of gamers. I'm a little old of the culture war. Like it doesn't interest me, but doesn't bother me. I think the cult was so fire and brimstone I don't think it would have changed the story if the kid just really like drawing or something. So it was just like "ah message or something..got it.". Fun fact up until 2019 teen Conversion Therapy was still legal in Colorado. There's where they hold teens hostage in hotels, literally tied to chairs and scream at them to stop being gay. America is a crazy place. For what it's worth I did vote for that to be banned.

Resident Evil 8: Village or Resident Evil: Village or REVILLAGE or whatever its called

So I took a staycation last week and beat Resident Evil 8: Village, to feed the survival horror bug while waiting on Silent Hill 2 remake. Its complicated but I bought the game on release and the shitty PC controls made me so mad I uninstalled it 5 minutes in. Much better experience this time I around. I was pretty hooked and pretty much played it non-stop until I beat it.

I will say it was much more of a cinematic experience, like REVII. I think some of the thrill of RE was ammo conservation, but ever since 4 they've moved away from it and REVIII largely felt like an interactive movie. I thought to myself, now that it really lacks any reference to bio-zombies it was more like a spiritual successor to Alone in The Dark. I was good, but I sorta wished I'd played REVII again first. I hadn't played that in a million years and REVIII is a direct sequel. Not like new story, but that literally the entire game ties back to REVII stuff so after I beat it I had to go back and watch recaps to understand what was going on.

Silent Hill 2 Remake

It appears to basically just be a true blue remaster with upgraded graphics and quality of life improvements. Very pretty and definitely brought the willies more than REVIII. I got about an hour or two and was liking what I was seeing, but it just came out at the most unfortunate time....

Metaphor: refantazio

I was actually trying to ignore this game because I was already playing Silent Hill 2, I have huge backlog and the dawn thing was $70 on all platforms with nary a discount to be found online. The problem is that I actually watched a few reviews and they were all like "PERSONA BUT ISEKAI", goddamn I wish they hadn't said Persona. Literally the same team. I guess they were working on this and not my precious Persona 6. I can say it's...fine. I'll be honest I'm pretty over all this isekai shit or should I say how dull it's gotten. Like mutherfucker Record of the Lodoss war came out when I was like 5, haven't we said all there is to be said with this genre?

Anyway the story isn't bad I guess. I just got to the point where the game opens up last night where you can run around begging people to be your friend because this game is literally a friendship contest thing where you gotta make the city love or the bad guy gets elected king.

The combat, bonds, and personas are all kinda still there, but Personas are pretty much just Job classes from your typical fantasy JRPG. It's cool. I'll play some more tonight, but I haven't really glommed onto any of the characters.

This is a serious game so I haven't yet seen any comic relief. It's funny, for all my complaints about Persona 5 is all MVC2 OST jazz and spectacle, it's kinda missing here. Maybe thats why I like the modern atmosphere RPGs. Even the music in this game is all Zack Snyder valkerie shit. The Duel of the Fate crap got on my nerves so much I actually turned the music way down. I don't need to hear the fucking monk chant album while walking down the street thanks.

It probably would've changed a lot seeing as the Seraphites seemed to draw graffiti all over the place. I don't know if its an oversight from the writers or indicative of how frustrated the Seraphites are, that their dress code is so strict but that the art they make of their prophet is so exuberant.

I found it kinda weird that the anti-LGBT sentiment would be so prevalent in the post-apocalyptic zombieland of 2038. The more intolerant 'old world' boomers would be long gone between 60% of the population getting culled during the outbreak and the ensuing 34 years of misery porn. LGBT is such a minuscule % to begin with, realistically how much representation would be left by 2038, and who the hell would find it within themselves to be angry about it? Thinking of bigots like Seth.

The Seraphites were basically evil Amish and probably would've anathema'd the trans kid over the mere act of shaving his head, regardless of whatever he identified as.

Nomada studio's first game. Just bought, will probably start tomorrow or later this week. Their second game, Neva, comes out tomorrow but they both look so pretty so I'd figure I'd just get the first game first. They're shorty indy platformers that have important whistful themes and look very nice, which is kind of my jam right now.

When I was typing that it did occur to me "Man being trans would be like the least of my problems", but and bear with me I played that like 4-5 years ago, I think the issue revolved more around them being old testament puritan types so I don't think it was the identification part that was issue, but it was that procreation stuff. Now I gotta go look up the character. I feel like they were beyond survival and more like make babies cult or something. So even though was a little eyerolling it worked in context.

Ok yeah says here

On Yara's advice, Lev keeps his feelings to himself. However, that changes when he is assigned to be a wife for an Elder.
Yeah it wasn't like "NO QUEERS IN OUR GROUP" stuff, it was like a Mulan kinda thing.

I could see it popping up as a 'How dare you not choose someone to procreate with you for the sake of prosterity with our numbers dwindeling'. And not to get too real world, but anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments have been on the rise among the youth in my country, so the idea that it's just a boomer thing is itself ironically old fashioned.

While that whole thing with Seth feels a little too padding one's self on the back in calling out homophobia, I do like how it's used to show how quickly disagreements need to get squashed within this community. If they let bad blood fester it would sow dissent and only weaken the sense of community and cooperation, so showing Maria try and be the immediate peacekeeper was a nice touch.

That's because RE8 is less survival and more action-horror a la RE4. RE8 is just literally RE4, but you're a somewhat normal dude and it's in first person. There was a 3rd person mode, you had to buy or get the gold edition. It's still bullshit. I did by the 3rd person mode, but at a sale, and RE8 I got use for $10. I find less reason to play RE8, because RE4R has a first person mode in VR, and the VR version of OG RE4 allows this too. RE8 is a good game, but I don't find it that special. I like it much more than RE7, RE6, and both Revelations games, but not enough to pull me back in for a NG+ playthrough.

Silent Hill 2 R - I am still working on the Otherworld Hospital segment, and about 66% done with it now. I have to do the basement after finding the -1 elevator button.

The thing is though that Lev being a boy WAS enough for him to get hunted. Yara says that Lev shaving his head like one of the men was a death sentence, and random enemy dialoge from the Seraphites only talks about Lev being an abomination for being who he is. The whole 'he was to be a wife to one of the men' feels completely pointless and only there to heap more misery onto this character.

For as proud as the game seems to be for having a trans character, the representation feels extremely early aughts Oscar bait in only showing him suffer for being trans, with Abby there as the savior, audience surrogate, character.

That just makes ND's efforts all the more shittier. I find it ironic Poison (Final Fight/Street Fighter III, IV, & V) is a better representation of a trans character than Lev. A reminder everyone: Poison did start off as a villain before becoming decent/heroic neutral.

To be fair "only showing [them] suffer" is how the game approaches every character. Anybody who experiences even a little bit of joy or validation is dead or alone and miserable by the end.

But yes, Lev could've been ostracized by his extremely backward culture/religion for whatever reason, and ND probably went with transphobia for the brownie points moreso than actual representation.

I dug up my 2022 writings about Last of Us II for a Steam post a few days ago. Someone told me Sony makes awesome games and named this one. I'll leave out my shoulder swap video, since that person I ignored is posting.

Last of Us II is idiotic. Will get to the story at the end of my post.

The production values are nice. But that's a double-edged sword that stifles creativity. When you have over 2,000 people (I didn't make that number up.) working on a game, it's much harder for any one of them to make a suggestion. If I had worked there at the time and it was a smaller project with fewer people, maybe someone would have listened to me or read my note in the suggestion box when I said that shoulder swapping should have been allowed at all times, not just while aiming. It makes corners worse. You often can't see what you turn towards with the gun down. L3 doesn't do anything important. Just lets you look at points of interest, which could have been done with Triangle when those moments occur. What they could have done is move the flashlight to L3 and then let you swap shoulders at all times with R3, fittingly the camera stick. Also wouldn't then have to leave the camera stick to press Cross to control THE CAMERA.

Would be good if some of the upgrades weren't under abilities that you don't really want and have little if anything to do with the other. I hardly ever used the listening mode, but I had to enhance it if I wanted certain other upgrades. Those later upgrades already cost more, so why put that extra cost there for something the player doesn't want? I hardly upgraded anything, because it's generally so expensive for so little.

Aiming is weird. Partly because the game assists. The assist can't be turned off. Been like this since the first game. Uncharted let you turn off the assist. Felt often like I fought the controls.

Wish the stealth was better. Wish that merely aiming at an unsuspecting enemy with your gun didn't give them this sixth sense. Well, not quite sixth sense, but it makes them extremely attuned to the outermost regions of their far peripheral vision.

Wish you could aim your gun from low cover without lifting your head. In Uncharted 1, you could actually pop out to the side from low cover, rather than always popping up. Uncharted 2 removed that, and I don't think Naughty Dog ever really improved their cover mechanics, whether it's sticky cover like Uncharted or free cover like The Last of Us. Well, it's nice that you can crouch and lie down. That's an improvement over Uncharted. But your movement options are still so limited that it's hard to aim at any enemy without getting shot at.

I found it so lame that your enemies always have unlimited ammo and you always have maybe two bullets, if any. Makes the game way too much about coming up behind, grab n' stab, rinse and repeat. I tried a balance of Hard and Survival. Nice that you can adjust all the individual difficulty parameters. But with the meter just one lower I found too many resources, when I only really wanted more ammo.

She kills so many people to avenge one person, in a story that's supposed to be serious. If you look up the term "cognitive dissonance" in a dictionary, the definition is "The Last of Us, Part II." The story has no point. I didn't feel like what I did mattered, because revenge is a stupid motivation. It's excusable in fantasy like God of War or exploitation like Kill Bill and Lady Snowblood, but stupid in serious drama. Imagine going through so much trouble, so much danger to your life, getting killed over and over from the player's perspective, to do something for a dead person who won't come back anyway. She murders about 150 people to spare one. Joel would be so proud. It feels so stupid by the end, with Ellie looking so autistic. Story is exceedingly grim. Really don't understand the draw to that kind of storytelling. If the characters' actions made sense it would at least be more excusable.

Twenty runners, a bunch of clickers and a bloater for some guitar strings from the music shop?!

Abbie is a crappy character design. Just made her arms as big as possible and called it a day. Look at bodybuilder Lisa Lyon. Much better balance there. Doesn't look like they simply attached a man's arms and shoulders to a woman's body. I know you can find much bigger women, but they look like shit and train far more than Abbie would have time for. Abbie probably also eats an inordinate amount of WLF's food.

Reminds me, those big human enemies are hilarious. The ones who will go on with bullet holes in their faces. That guy whose jaw you cut in half, was he on PCP? Just dumb.

So much leftist virtue signaling in this game that the experience feels inauthentic.

Those 21 floors you descend without an elevator in the spore-infested building were one of my favorite settings in the series.

First game is also highly overrated. Mediocre. Never really bought into it or cared, their relationship. The first Walking Dead game did the man being redeemed through an adopted daughter better. Clickers got old quick. Just more slow, tiresome crouching.

I've been playing UFO 50, it's a lot of fun. I don't even know why gaming ever progressed passed the 16 bit era, because I'm having more fun with this than I was The Best Game of All Time. I do think I'm going to have to beat all the games, I feel that stubborn determination already welling up inside me. So far I've gotten the cherry on Attactics, so 1/50 done!

I wouldn't even say that's necessarily a problem - The everyone being miserable part. I mean, Silent Hill 2 was filled with miserable characters. Angela (in the original anyway, can't say about the remake) gets absolutely nothing; no joy, no relief, not even the idea of rest through suicide. It's just misery. But it's the difference between 'nothing good happened to these characters' and 'nothing good WILL happen to these characters', the latter of which being what TLoU2 opperates under. Taking characters like Ellie and Tommy and warping them into these miserable, violent pricks just to say 'guess you shouldn't have been a miserable, violent prick, huh'. There was already some of that in the first game, with the Pittsburgh backstory; the people rising up against FEDRA because they were being opressed and not given any food, but look at that, now the people are just as bad as FEDRA was. 🤷‍♂️ This mentality of 'everyone is just going to become an asshole', and for the sequel Druckmann decided to spread this to the main characters.

Also, somewhat unrelated, but taking a voice actress with as melodic a voice as Ashley Johnson and then having her put on this boring gruff voice... What the hell is that?!

About the same as the original.

The difference between SH2/SH2R and TLOUS II, is the latter has actual humanity. Even with the more depressed or downer endings. TLOUS II has none of that, along with lacking dignity nor grace as I've mentioned time and time again. TLOUS II is just some wannabe edge lord fanfic made by a guy with a head up his ass and has become less relevant in the gaming shpere.

Awesome

Please share your progress on my UFO 50 thread as you play (this thread has become about some trans/anti-trans nonsense and folks still upset that not everybody hates a 5 yr old popular video game as much as they do).

All I did with UFO 50 was sample all the game for a bit and that was already the greatest gaming experience of 2024. I don't know if/when I'll go back to any of the individual games since I'm starting a new job soon so time will be limited but we'll see.

Do what you can and congratulations on the new job.

I played two arcade runs of Marvel vs. Capcom 1. My team was Ryu and Captain Commando in the first run. Second run was Morrigan and Strider. I managed to beat my high score and get first place on the second run.

I finally got around to trying Blasphemous. I’m intrigued but WTF is the deal with controller support. Like, some of the buttons don’t even work, and I know it’s an Indie game but yeesh. Guess I’ll have to try DS4 Windows or something because as-is it’s kinda unplayable, and I’m not using my loud-ass keyboard for everything at night in a hack n slash game.

The Tomb Raider 1-3 Remaster is $15 on Steam so I picked that up and played the first couple levels of 1. This is good stuff. It has native PS controller support including icons which kinda makes sense given its origins. Toggle between old school visuals and the remaster with a button on the fly, and there’s also an option for original tank controls or modern, with mapping. AFAIK it’s also automatically at “best” visual settings supported, because I didn’t see any typical graphics options otherwise. What voodoo magic is this as it just looks optimal in either case, while playing as expected with several tweaks available. Plus a photo mode with different poses, expressions, outfits, etc.

Rockstar/Take2, are you taking notes?

Skyward Sword's art style is childish. Proportions so stretched and weird.

Cutscenes just keep going, like MGS but not fun.

Link's pants suck. Tights or kid's bare legs. (Kid Link was better.) Nothing else works. Those earrings have to go. The chainmail under his tunic I don't care for. Liked it better when the green clothes were just his regular everyday clothes and he already wore them before his adventure.
