In a major move set to electrify action film aficionados, Shout! Studios has nabbed worldwide rights (excluding select Asian territories) to the coveted Golden Princess movie library, a treasure trove of 156 Hong Kong cinema classics that’s been MIA from Western markets for decades.

The deal, which brings together Hollywood’s indie powerhouse with one of Hong Kong cinema’s most prestigious catalogs, includes genre-defining works from directing legends John Woo and Tsui Hark, alongside star-studded vehicles featuring Chow Yun-fat, Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Leslie Cheung.

The acquisition’s crown jewels include Woo’s action masterpieces “Hard Boiled,” “The Killer,” the complete “Better Tomorrow” trilogy, “Bullet in the Head” and “Once a Thief.” The library also boasts Ringo Lam’s “City on Fire,” “Prison on Fire” and its sequel; Eric Tsang’s “Aces Go Places”; Tsui’s “Peking Opera Blues”; Tony Ching’s “Chinese Ghost Story” trilogy; and additional hits like Wai Ka-fai’s “Peace Hotel,” Andrew Kam and Johnnie To’s “The Big Heat” and Alex Law’s “Now You See It, Now You Don’t.”

These films, which dominated screens during Hong Kong’s cinematic golden age of the ’80s and ’90s, left an indelible mark on Hollywood, inspiring everything from Quentin Tarantino’s oeuvre to “The Matrix” and “John Wick” franchises.

The landmark acquisition was hammered out by Shout! Studios’ David McIntosh, Jordan Fields and Taylor Devorsky, with Golden Princess Amusement Co., Ltd.’s Dickson Lai and Ronald Chu representing the seller’s interests.

“This is a big one,” said Shout’s Fields, who is senior VP of acquisitions and originals. “Golden Princess sits alongside Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest in the pantheon of Hong Kong cinema, but unlike the other two, the Golden Princess library has been dormant for decades outside of Asia. Its fingerprints are all over modern action and crime genres, though, so we have big plans to reintroduce these fabled titles to the rest of the world, complementing Shout!’s growing catalog of revered Asian films.”

Lai, executive director of Kowloon Development Company Ltd., the parent company of Golden Princess, added: “The films in the Golden Princess Library are akin to the sword in the stone. Shout! is the entity capable of unlocking its potential.”

The deal promises a feast for genre fans, with Shout! planning to remaster select Woo titles and even return some classics to theaters. Fields added, “We have big plans for home video. We know that audience and will super-serve them.”

Beyond physical media, these Hong Kong gems will find a new streaming home on Shout! TV, the company’s digital entertainment platform, where they’ll receive special programming treatment including marathons and viewing events.

My Hong Kong import of The Killer:

My Japanese Blu-ray download of Hard Boiled:

Not good. I've only watched A Better Tomorrow, the first sequel, Hard Boiled, The Killer and Bullet in the Head, and I obviously want those upgraded. (A Better Tomorrow has a Hong Kong UHD, which is alright, but too yellow.) But I know this is much bigger than John Woo's movies. Excited to discover.

Buck Woodall claims Disney stole elements of a screenplay he wrote for an animated film called Bucky.

Both Bucky and Moana follow teenagers who defy their parents and travel from their Polynesian villages to save their homes, meeting ancient spirits along the way.

The lawsuit (per The Hollywood Reporter), points to other similarities between Moana and Bucky, including the protagonist in both stories meeting a demigod covered in tattoos and wielding a large fish hook.

Their journeys both start with turtles, have plots centred on a necklace, and discover large creatures living within a mountain.

In reference to Moana 2, court documents claim both films see their protagonists attempting to break a curse by searching for an ancient island.

I'm glad it's Doug Cockle, but the setup seems a little too large scale. A more artsy, intimate story would suit the Witcher better.

As DEI initiatives get thrown out the window and Sheyl Sandberg of Lean In fame gets thrown under the bus, a new girlboss will rise. A fictional girlboss, but hey: at least there’s some universe where glass ceilings are still being broken. This particular universe is Mindy Kaling’s Running Point, a new basketball comedy starring Kate Hudson. On Tuesday, Netflix announced the 10-episode first season will premiere on February 27. To celebrate the occasion, the streamer released a Running Point first look (below).

According to a synopsis from Netflix, “Isla (Hudson), the only sister in a family of brothers, is ambitious and often overlooked. But when her brother (Justin Theroux) is forced to resign from his position as president of the Los Angeles Waves, she’s appointed in his place. Now that she’s stepping up into the family business, she’s going to have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job. Over the course of the series, she sets out to do just that—especially in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports.”

First time hearing about the man who voice Jar Jar. And man, I feel bad for him. I thought Jake Lloyd (kid Anakin) went through some shit, but this guy.... Wow.

If anything, the hate should've been towards who wrote Jar Jar to be that way. And that still would be going to far, because in the end, Jar Jar is a fictional character, and SW is just a movie series.

Super glad everything worked out for him in the end, though!

This is one of the many reasons why I don't bother with Star Wars any more. The toxic fan really take it too far the most on a consistent basis.

He got another shot at Star Wars fame, and this one I feel will be better remembered and regarded. I sure as hell thought it was cool.

Ahmed Best got to play Kelleran Beq; originally the character was a Jedi game show host on a Star Wars kids website. In Mandalorian, he's the Jedi Knight who gets Grogu to safety. Also apparently Best is an actual trained sword fighter so he even got to show off a bit.

I'll be the first to admit I gave the character of Jar Jar shit at the drop of a hat, any hat but Ahmed Best did not deserve any of that. I don't remember if I ever projected that on to Best himself, I sure hope I didn't, but if I did: then I was a fuckwit of the first order.
