It might be a hot take (probably not hot enough for the main thread), but my favorite missions in MW2 are the Rangers ones on the American home front. Admittedly they kinda suffer from being a little too America-Fuck-Yeah, but the setting is (or was in 2009) honestly pretty different to where most games were going, as much as it's kinda biting off Red Dawn. And stepping out of the bunker at the start of 'Of Their Own Accord' and seeing Washington DC on fire was pretty striking, and I'm not even American.
Plus, you have the fabulous Keith David as Sergeant Foley with you in all of these missions.

The missions are cool, but the setup is just really stupid. So stupid its hard to ignore it for the cool missions for me. Its one of those things that is based on something in reality but then you need to ignore everything about reality for it to work.

More Morrowind. I had the game crash on me, and I got the +20-year-old error message that the disc might be dirty or damaged; lol, it's a digital download. Oh, and a bug that's apparently been around since the game came out a thousand years ago has persisted into the digital version; there's a cave that's directly linked to progress in one of the major houses' questlines that once inside, all the interior doors behave as locked ones despite not actually being locked, so unless you've got a recent save outside of the cave or a spell to teleport out, you can effectively be stuck in there with no way out.

*sigh* I still love this game despite it having aged like mayonnaise in the sun...

I'm used to Final Fantasy games having rough a few rough bosses and certain enemies that are hard, but the difficulty in FF13 feels much higher then most FF games normal enemy encounters can go so badly if you don't keep things under control and getting an ambush really changes everything. Kinda puts me in mind of the harder Persona games. I finally got to the open world area and probably didn't spend enough time beating enemies before going into the caves.

I did have that experience, but at the same time, as I mentioned before it's pretty satisfying when you can figure out how to keep a tough fight under control and steamroll it. Though if you want that experience in a game that doesn't have as many glaring flaws, you might check out 7 Remake if you haven't already once you're done with 13.

I already beat the 7 remake and rebirth. Haven't done rebirth on hard yet. Been thinking about doing that, but I also got the Phoenix Point dlc on steam sale and I think the next big rpg is gonna be Persona 3. I only got a little into it before my save got eaten so I'm going in mostly blind.

@Worgen and @NerfedFalcon, MW2 Remastered has been completed. This game is pretty much a late 2000s action movie. Fun game, but really stupid story. The voice acting from long time actors and Keith David carries this game. Despite the over the top nature, campaign missions with the Rangers are the best part of the game, Oil Rig and Prison levels aside for Task Force 141. Because you're in a full scale war and invasion tagging with Keith David has your commanding officer! These levels look even better in the remastered version! Lot's orange and red covered in darkness.

One constant flaw I noticed with remaster are the checkpoints not working properly until after you already died, or because you jumped ahead of the NPC. It happened about 15% of the time. Hopefully that is not the case for MW1 Remastered when I get to it.

Back into The Witcher 3, the Brothers in Arms quest at the part about trying to trick the Hym with Cerys. I’m at level 23. It’s just so big lol every time I play looking at the map I’m like wtf should I do in the limited time I have to play? Maybe I’ll fit in some contracts tonight. I already botched a few side quests so that alleviates the urge to be a completionist.

@Worgen, @hanselthecaretaker2, @laggyteabag, and @NerfedFalcon, Modern Warfare Remaster is complete. Mile High Club included. This game is so much better, tightly paced, and way more grounded. There are few odd checkpoints, and some parts of the game don't say what you're supposed, even when they "say it" (though some of that is possibly me), and even on Normal, enemies in later chapters will spam grenades like crazy. All said: the mission design and structure is much tighter, and the game ends on a proper bittersweet note. I am going to play arcade mode for a little bit.

I wonder why they never brought that back. It's a fun bonus mode that is never revisited again by any of the in-house devs. I am pretty much all CODed out right now. It was fun revisiting some of these titles, and playing a few of the later games I had no interest in at the time. Thanks again fellas.

It's great that you discovered something new you like! I agree, Modern Warfare is still something special. Maybe I'll see about getting WW2 or Vanguard the next time they're on sale (no way in shit I'm buying a CoD game at full price).

OT: Beat up the first Devil Flags boss in Pirate Yakuza. I might've been overleveled for it because I've been doing basically all the bounty targets as soon as I pass by them, even the ones that are rated 4 or 5 stars, and put it off until the middle of Chapter 3. Still, I don't like to focus on any one thing for too long, so I likely won't end up finishing the Devil Flags sidequest before the end credits. Still, once I do hit the end credits, I'll likely head back to FF7 Rebirth, so I may as well see about doing at least a fair bit of the side content before then.

The ship combat is actually starting to get a little difficult sometimes. The upgrades you receive are fairly incremental, and tougher Devil Flags and Colosseum fights will do things like drop barrels if you get behind them or come at you in huge numbers. Not that I mind a difficulty increase considering how easily it started. Still don't think it's as good as Assassin's Creed 4's ship combat, but I've yet to find a game that is in twelve years since it came out, so I'm not gonna hold that against it.

And somehow, I've managed to spend 17 hours playing a Yakuza game without once playing mahjong. Gonna have to fix that soon.

You play on consoles right? If you do, then just buy these games used at either your local second hand store, or just go straight to Amazon and buy them used. MW1 Remastered I did buy new, but that's because it's at $25 on Amazon, and would get it with one day shipping for free. MW2 Remastered is digital only, but is at $19.99. If you want it at 1/2 off or less, then I won't blame you.

I know right. Its not just a great cod, but legit a great game. Story is way better then you would expect from cod, but also just legit tight and good. Gameplay isn't as good as the later cod games but its still really good.

Usually I play FPS on PC, I just find a mouse and keyboard a lot more comfortable for that genre than a controller. I bought Reboot MW1 for Playstation because it was $20, though, so I might do that for the two that I mentioned if I can find them for a price like that.

I beat the Skull Storm thing in Inscryption and it required a ridiculous amount of tampering and dumb luck. No savescumming, ma!

> Pick the Mantis deck
> Trade the two starter pelts for a Pronghorn with the Bifurcated sigil and a Magpie with the Looking Glass sigil
> Juice up the Mantis God at a bonfire so its attack power triples
> Sacrifice the Pronghorn to the Mantis God so it adds +2 damage to the left and right attacks (not center)
> Sacrifice a Ring Worm at a bonfire to get free double downs for the rest of the run
> Sacrifice the second Ring Worm at an altar to take it out of the rotation, ensuring (for now) I always get Mantis God in my first hand and clear any low level battle in one play
> Commission a painting of the Mantis God, getting a duplicate with the Fecundity sigil (which spawns another Mantis God in your hand when played)
> One of the boss chests screws me out of forcing Mantis Gods every first hand by giving me low-cost cards. I picked a no-cost Geck
> Now conjoin the two duplicates at the mycologist, resulting in a Mantis God with 8 attack power times five strikes in three different directions
> At this point I sacrifice the Magpie to give the Looking Glass sigil to the no-cost Geck card, just in case
> Buy a Gold Pelt from the Trapper, and a Skinning Knife, exchange the Pelt at the next trade post for... another Mantis God
> Used the Skinning Knife to win one of the three grizzly boss fights; used two Wise Clocks to win the other two
> Final boss and I don't draw any freaking Mantis cards but the Geck with the Looking Glass pays off
> Search for the Mantis God, play it, spawn duplicate, play that too, cleared the two waves, Magickal Bleach during the third stage and Bob's your uncle

EDIT:

Made it through Chapter 3 of Pirate Yakuza a little while back. Currently been at the same main story objective for the last few days to do some cleanup; clear bounties and treasure, get money to upgrade my ship, so it'll be good enough to beat the boss, that kinda thing. I also finished the Minato Girls sidequest series, and the payoff was totally worth it.

I might be strong enough to move on, but with all the new crew members I picked up, might clear a few more Devil Flags to get them some levels first, just to be safe. Always how these games end up going, you do a thing so you can do another thing so you can finally do the thing that you originally set out for. But I enjoy the process.

Phoenix Point... I got the dlc for it during the steam sale and had been kinda thinking about replaying it despite how much I hated the final mission. I was going to play it as something else to do while I was also playing other games but its grabbed me so now its all I am playing. I'm doing the Terror from the Void mod so far the flow is pretty similar, I feel like solder upgrades are much more powerful. Like my sniper can overwatch for 1 ap (you get 4 ap a turn and usually firing a sniper rifle takes 3 ap) and she fires twice when she takes an overwatch shot. I don't recall being able to build someone that strong before, but its welcome since enemies evolve and get more difficult to damage.

Pretty much finished with Persona 3 Reload. Third act was all right, game ending felt a bit generic other than not actually backing down on killing off your character. Technically, I still have the playable epilogue left, but I know what's coming.

Still replaying Tomb Raider II. I think my ranking is I > III > II.

Beat Underworld ten years ago, rated it a 2/5, before I ever played anything older than Legend. Just installed it again. I have so many problems with the gameplay.

Why bring the camera over the shoulder when she shoots if it's an auto-aim shooter? For what possible reason? Why does L2 have to pull out the gun if you can already shoot by pressing R2 by itself? It means that you can't do backflips, cartwheels and the forward flip that Link sometimes does in Majora's Mask without the camera zoomed in and the guns drawn.

That's the generation of consoles in which magnetic ledges replaced real platforming, meaning running and jumping. Well, not ledges, but I'll say ledges because I can't think of the word right now. The linear, sticky "ledges" are all over the place. Climbing, climbing, climbing, everywhere.

She moves so spastically as her system interacts with all the ledges and narrow beams for the player, and it's all done without a grab button to make it easier. You can't even run off a ledge because she will automatically drop down and grab it. When you try to run off a ledge that is not interactive, she will simply stop.

When you do get to jump to another platform from a run rather than a climb, that too is auto-steered.

More context-sensitive maneuvers with the grapple hook.

Motorcycle has auto-steering too.

What a crappy, crappy generation.

"I don't know what L2 and R2 means," someone who gets it responded, "but I agree that the LAU trilogy is pure decline when it comes to controlling Lara and exploring the levels. Underworld is still better than Legend, the locations are great and it has some decent puzzles. But yes, the entire trilogy has severely downgraded platforming. Ledges are sticky, you can only grab whatever the devs assigned as grabbable, Lara gravitates towards the grabbable ledges when jumping, the platforming is a lot more guided by nudging her towards intended positions. There's also a lot more context sensitive maneuvers, like anything involving the grappling hook. Controls feel far less precise than in the original games because of that.

"That era of gaming cemented modern decline features. It never recovered, at least in the AAA space. Game design has followed those same lines since the mid-late 00s and never looked back."

"I am playing Tomb Raider 2. Now here's a bunch of reasons why a completely different game that I'm not playing is terrible, with no detail about the game I'm actually playing."

You really just can't help yourself but whinge and moan at every turn, can you? It's like you're not capable of enjoying anything except by not enjoying things.
