It does look like a lot of generative AI places are cutting back services, or paywalling them or summat. Looks like it turned out pricier to run than expected.

Well yeah, the point is to have everyone try it to make people think they need it so then they pay for it. How else could they possibly earn back the astronomical amount of money that's been invested into AI? There's gonna be a massive recession when the market realizes all that money is not going to ever be recouped. If you're anywhere near close to retirement, move your 401K investments out of the stock market and into bonds.

President Trump plans to install some of the biggest names in business—including Meta Platforms Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, Oracle Executive Chairman Larry Ellison and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang—to a technology council to weigh in on AI policy and other issues.

The President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, or PCAST, will be co-chaired by David Sacks, who has served as White House AI and crypto czar, and Michael Kratsios, another technology adviser, according to a White House official.
Real wolves guarding the sheep stuff. I predict their advise will be, by unanimous consensus: "Don't" Or perhaps: "ban all AI except ours"

Musk snubbed hard.

If you go five minutes into the video, he talks about a group of farmers that refused a $26 million deal with an AI company. I am happy to see people with big standards and not be pushed round by some big company.

They're having to face up to the fact that the investment money could be drastically reduced long before they're profitable, so they need to monetise services, fast. In the case of Sora shuttering, I wonder whether it's more the much higher cost to produce video output than the low user base.

Let's also consider other recent events. Making AI is incredibly expensive and requires huge amounts of investment, to support datacentres that use vast amounts of power. Power from electricity that is still largely generated by fossil fuels.

What's happened to the price of oil and gas recently? Oh dear.

Seems like that's gonna be really confusing, having two of them.
To be fair, Zuck is the tech CEO where I think it's most likely a hallucinating AI would be an improvement.

As I saw someone (Cory Doctorow?) put it, "Zuckerberg hasn't had a good idea since he stole the idea for Facebook off the Winklevoss twins". Meta's record of failure at developing new products is truly spectacular: they're even worse than Google and Microsoft.

My GP surgery has just sent out this generic message:

"Dear ********

We introduced... an AI receptionist a few weeks ago, with the intention of improving the service. It hasn't worked as expected, and know lots of people have found it frustrating. We have switched it off today."
