I gave up about half way reading through all that; The dude sounds like one of those crazy conspiracy buffs and religious nutjobs who tries to make everything in the world as sin;

Actually, a combination of both, which makes the guy sound even more crazy.

....If Trump mandates the MAGA hat to be worn at all times, or have everyone implant some weird microchips on their right hands just to buy stuff, then I MIGHT consider taking him more seriously

Why stop there? Trump needs to rail against the catholics all day. Take all of their funding. Or worse, make them pay taxes.

What's wrong with dismissing them? They are nobodies. If they were somebodies they either wouldn't have been on that island, or they would've been there as guests.

Nice, but I still feel this is a more appropriate design

Hang on, isn't there some kind of arcane law that says nothing can be taller than either the White House or the Capitol Building? Or is that a myth?

No, that's a myth. There is a 1910 law that limits commercial buildings height to the width of their adjacent street plus 20 feet, generally limiting building height to around 130 feet, but since the arch is not a commercial building, it does not apply.

In a way, there's no greater way to demonstrate artistic and creative bankruptcy than to copy someone else's 200-year-old monument, just bigger. What would be genuinely interesting is to put forward a design competition with a blank slate, and see what people come up with.

I'm not sure how good an idea it is to make it white and gold. That's potentially going to look dirty quckly, and take a lot of maintenance.

Well, l'Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile is not the only triumphal arch in Paris. There's also l'Arc de Triomphe du Caroussel and la Grande Arche de la Défense. And under no circumstance should Trump have less than the surrender monkeys, now can it?

So opportunity for at least two additional arches. More if we count some of the gates like Porte Saint-Denis and Porte Saint-Martin. I suppose they could let a plebe design one of the lesser ones.

Triumphal arches are Roman, so the French were themselves copying, although a gap of 1000+ years is better to pass off as homage rather than crass imitation.

I think a key thing about triumphal arches is that they tended to be erected in recognition of successful generals/leaders. It feels a little underwhelming being commissioned by a draft-dodger with a distinctly mediocre military record. Although I can understand why a crass, grandiose narcissist likes the idea that a triumphal arch will forever be associated with him.

Hence also all the renaming stuff after himself, one of my favorite being the US Institute of Peace. Which is now the DJT Institute of Peace, tho the institute it's supposed to headquarter is effectively defunct. Since it's a nice building, it's now an event venue for Trump et al. A much better use than some prattling on about peace.

Tho to get back to your earlier comment about a design competition for the arch, artists will most definitely apply their designs post facto. White makes for an attractive canvas.

If they want to appeal to Trump, they'll use white marble and gold leaf, since that's his crass definition of "style". It's why he's been turning the White House into a McMansion.

Every US president should follow his model, and go round naming everything after themselves, put their faces on currency, demanding judges and legislators obey them. I suggest they could also do away with that fusty old title of "President" and use something with a bit more grandeur and authority. "King" sounds good. Maybe "Emperor"?

Tsar, obviously. Trump seems to like that one.

Guys, I have a confession to make..... I voted for Trump in 2024.

Before you guys come at me with pitchforks and torches, hear me out;

I didn't like Trump's first term back in 2016. And despite vowing to never do so, I voted someone from Democrats, Biden, back in 2020.

At first he seemed alright, but then I begin to question his lack of action; the lukeworm responses to southern borders, Israel-Hamas conflic, Ukraine-Russia conflict, etc. And let's also not forget many times he stuttered, facing and talking to an empty space, and his terrible handling of the US economy.

So in 2024, despite half of me screaming at me, I voted for Trump. All the promises and ptich that Kamala Harris came up with sounded worse.

.....To say it is one of the worst decisions in my life, something that might haunt me for the rest of it would be an understatement. WTF was I thinking?

I genuinely thought things couldn't get any worse. I couldn't have anticipated the ICE raids, the Israel-Iran conflict, and any other BS Trump is pulling.

That twitter art made me bang my head against the wall for like 5 min.

I am trying to take solace and convince myself that I wasn't the only one who got blindsided. And many of the Trump voters are thinking the same thing right now (save for those delusional far-right folks).

Okay, now you guys may throw those tomatoes and eggs at me; I kinda deserve it

Hmmm, are they going to copy Paris's famous traffic as well?

EDIT: Okaaaay, the above makes a joke about stereotypical French driving less immediately relevant to the thread.

and his terrible handling of the US economy.
The US' economy had one of the best recoveries of all the first world countries post covid. Even before Covid struck Trump had already thoroughly fucked up the US economy to the point that people were expecting a recession to hit by the end of 2020/early 2021, Biden was dealt a horrible hand inheriting a Republican torpedoed economy that then got doubly fucked by a pandemic. Considering both things Biden's administration did a great job course correcting the ship.

And for some reason you expected the guy who bankrupts companies, including casinos, by design and who partly caused the economic situation to fix it?

Whoever influenced you into thinking that Trump would ever be good for the US economy, never fucking ever take their advice again, ever, on anything.

Having said the above, it's good that you realise you made a mistake, here's to hoping you learn from it.

Counterpoint to all these lies about US economic woes: the S&P 500 has never been higher. Check! Mate!

I'm not interested in yelling at people. I'm more curious about how people reason. What of Harris' pitch was it that you thought sounded much more horrible?

As a side note, I consider the true problem in US politics that come election day there are effectively two choices. If you find neither appealing then it's just a matter of picking your poison, since voting third party harms your interests unless they actually succeed. To describe what the dividing(s) line between Democrats and Republicans are boils down to what you value and how you think and frame the conversation. One such framing would be "How much do you want the government to interfer with your life?", where democrats would prefer greater inerference and republicans smaller, and if one has doubt in either government's effectiveness or distrust it makes sense to go for the alternative.
