Okay I saw this on reddit, did a bit of reading and if I'm understanding it correctly: technically, the ESA are right (Gods I need a shower).
Specifically they're talking about private servers for shuttered live services games - Anthem for example - qualifying as software piracy since shutdown or no, that software is still the legal property of its publisher and unauthorised use is unauthorised use. It is absolutely stupid as hell for that to be the case, but it currently IS the case.
Now this fucking muppet and his colleagues made that a blanket statement for all dedicated servers which is of course super dumb because many LAN multiplayer games have had that function as a sort of expected feature until Broadband/XBox Live killed LAN gaming (outside of old holdouts like me) and then Modern Warfare 2 (the OG) dropping it in favour of P2P hosting - remember that 'protest' that lasted about, eight seconds? I sure do - pretty much signed the function's death warrant.
Charlie and others make a note of it, but as you mentioned in the second paragraph, none of them can care about the actual legalities or stuff that aren't harming anything. Oh, and I most definitely remember that protest and laughing at the people who didn't do a darn thing.
I forgot Kojima was doing this. Nothing against the man, but microsoft could cut him, and they [Kojima and his team] wouldn't lose much. Not gonna gain much staying on xbox anyway.

How does sony even expect to sell a PS6 whenever they eventually get there? Especially with all these outrageous prices.
Sony just deleted 551 movies from people's digital libraries too. So to announce their games are going to be all digital now is not a good look.
Then again PC players have been living in fear for decades since every game is digital on PC and could vanish forever at any given time. I remember I got this one game last about a Guard that was High and i can't find it anywhere.

Lol. No, they won't. That's the whole point. You will only buy from PlayStation Store. They always wanted to fully control the marketplace on their closed platform, and now they will. By "retailers" they mean their gift cards, but the purchase will still be made on PlayStation Store.
They may remove games or go out of business. My account could be banned or stolen and I might find that Sony's customer service is, indeed, difficult to work with. A disc was the one thing consoles still had over computers.
I started a new PSN account in 2015 because I could not change the country or name. I created it when I lived in my home country, where I expected at one time to stay. When you use a local payment method on Steam, the account is automatically updated to that country, so I used the same one in both countries and was always able to make purchases. It would have sucked if I had more digital games on that old PSN account than Ico and the two free games I received as an apology for the notorious hack, Super Stardust HD and LittleBigPlanet.
It comes a week after Sony removed all StudioCanal movies from people's accounts without refunding them. Like Mister Rossman said, they can't claim to sell you products that they don't own (StudioCanal owns them.) and change the language 26 pages into the user agreement.

it's funny that this is the same shit Jim Sterling used to say. Directed mostly at Nintendo but still the point remains the same.
I think this should drive Emulation and Rom makers harder. Or someone should take this to court, because people aren't stealing out of an affordability issue (generally). Instead now you have the argument that you pay for something that at any time the company could decide you don't get to have it anymore and yank it from you.
So how can they claim that piracy is theft if it's the only way for people to ensure that they keep the things they bought? Or furthermore how can they justify selling a product, because a game is a product not a service or rental, that they can revoke from you at any time for no reason at all.
