Lets be realistic. Nintendo famicom was a creation via NEC requesting to make the PC-Engine design. Nintendo took that idea and made a super-cheap variant. Same with Famicom-Disk system. The famicom was featured in many comics( Mangas ) for years. It became the defacto standard. Nintendo also reuses code across teams unlike SEGA which made them more easier for game design rather then game programming.

The PSX was an error. It is really the SNES 2. Because Nintendo wanted to control rights we got the PSX. All of those first generation PSX games was all meant to be Nintendo games. SONY mimicked Nintendo year after year maintaining the SNES image. SONY had the money to allow publishers to have free marketing.

Microsoft X-box was the biggest mistake for anybody. The games and consoles have aged badly. So badly that it makes games not yet ported to PC into collectables.
All Microsoft games are just PC games in disguise. The PC counter-parts plays and look infinity times better then the actual X-box system itself. Yes I will admit publishers like SEGA did a great job making original content but at the same time was a waste of time as well. All GCN, Wii, and WiiU games could all run on the same system itself.
The PS3 has that same power. Point I am making is why Microsoft why? My PC is basically an X-box.

SEGA is filled with smug. They are clearly nationalist, have issues with publishers and take too much pride in programming. Yes their PC games are amazing and out of the world playable and the content is amazing. I have a SEGA Saturn import with many games for that purpose. Saturn was the last true SEGA system. SEGA could have released an attachement to play 32X and Genesis and Master System on the Saturn but nope. SEGA usa had to push 3d crap. If we had Segata Sanshiro during the Saturn life I would probably have owned all those games.

...................

Talking about now here is the real deal.

Switch ( classic gaming )
PC ( AAA gaming )
Android ( handheld )

Everything sucks because everything is DLC.

Well I dunno what some of y'all are talkin' about but for the original question, I don't see how it's hard to contend with the idea that Sony and Nintendo are the premier first-party game creators (or publishers, or producers, or whatever). Talking about proprietary stuff, right?

I mean I feel like "Nintendo" is its own subgenre of games. And it's a subgenre I personally dislike (Bayonetta is the only exclusive franchise I've enjoyed from Nintendo since I got back into gaming as an adult). But that's good, though- like I know it's not for me.

Meanwhile Sony is the THE place to go for third-person action adventure stuff. Spiderman, Last of Us, God of War, Returnal, Demons Souls/Bloodborne.. which is precisely my jam.

Now, because I'm a single dude with disposable income I have all three platforms and they serve different purposes:

Playstation 5: For Sony exclusives and big AAA titles like Elden Ring.
XBox Series S: GamePass box
Nintendo Switch: traveling toy for indies and Bayonetta, to be replaced with a Steam Deck after I'm finished with Bayonetta 3

Microsoft's best thing is Gamepass, not any game because I don't care about Halo.

Difficult question. I consider Nintendo to be the best when it comes to the consistency of the quality of their games, while Nintendo also has the stubborn unwillingness to allow for any of it's exclusive games to get to PC or any of the other platforms which I despise because exclusives are a plague on the industry and should be illegal. Microsoft just seems to have the worst systems and games both out of the three, while Sony's systems tend to be the best of the three, their games tend to be good, and most of them eventually come to PC if only years later.

Lets get something straight. Nintendo put the PSX on the map by backing out on the deal to license games in SONY name. A deal they made when two random dudes from both companies agreed to give the SNES/SFC the sound system it was known for next to an Amiga or dedicated computer of the time back in 1989.

About "illegal" when the PSX hit the fan they gave free marketing to any publisher just to make PSX games and only PSX games. It made deals with Naughty Dog to produce X amount of Crash games for it's console. Lets be clear about something, the only reason why the PSX had Metal Gear was because of the Mature image it had in the west, not the RPG syndrome that was created via FFVII, but that leather image that was even preserved into the "Darker" PS2. When "Zelda OOT" was released everybody brought a N64 used or new just to play that game and returned ASAP the moment they finished and enjoyed every ounce of that game. I remember seeing piles of returned or resold N64 paired up with Zelda carts. The reality is that Nintendo makes the best hardware and the videogames is the selling point.

That being said here is a fact about Japanese videogaming market. The term TV-toy is what videogames are. In Japan with the amount of respect consumers have for the products people are willing to purchase plugo-in All in one systems just to play that one game. People will buy a Panasonic 3d0 just to play "Policenauts" just to enjoy the original dialog, and original art, and play the game it was meant to play. Every other version is just a port with different artwork. Same with "Snatcher" AKA CD-romantic was the selling point for the PCE game even if Snatcher is a Floppy disk game, but just to enjoy it in it's completion. Flash forward to the SEGA-CD game that took advantage of Light-gun ( whatever ) and your bombarded with censored material, flash forward to the PSX version censored everywhere and no light-gun, That is pure insanity to know the definitive version has been censored down and the PCE is the most complete version asides the original. The funny fact the artwork has been changed around on each port.

In short Japanese gaming market expects you to purchase one game for console like somebody purchasing a "Tiger Handheld electronic". It is not illegal. You want to play all Nintendo game s including Wii then figure out emulation and the usage on your PC because you can. Of course online-play is another story entirely.
