I think you have rather unrealistic expectations of the trajectory his life and that of his followers was gonna take before this and their responses to theoretical events (not being reelected).

Yeah strongly agree, Trump need to be defeated at the ballot box if there's any chance that his cult accept that maybe he wasn't the glorious leader. If he dies now they'll see him as some "martyr" (never mind that he'd die from a disease that he himself denied was dangerous). Same for the republican party, they decided that Trumpism was above all other value they held, they need to face the consequence of that choice rather than have an easy escape. Worse him dying might actually increase the chance of democrat losing the election, hard to rail against a dead man.
