I've heard it said before, yes. By people who have no idea how much the NRA would love if every American trained for a concealed carry permit.

"But Reagan and the black panthers" comes the frequent reply. You have to understand: The NRA was a radically different organization pre-1977. There has been a massive change since the Cincinnati revolution (or revolt, depending on who you ask)

This isn't what would realistically happen?

Can you talk some more about this NRA revolt in 1977?

No, it is not. Bojack is a funny show, but this isn't realistic. Not that I don't think California wouldn't try it if it weren't for the Second Amendment.

To make a long story short, the NRA prior to 1977 was a fairly run-of-the-mill group interested in shooting sports and did very little in the way of political advocacy (at least compared to now). At the convention in 1977, when it came time to select the board, a group of people who had a more aggressive view for the organization were voted in. They proceeded to turn the NRA into what it is today.
