The First Xbox Series X/S exclusive has been released, at least the first one I remember seeing on the showcase. The Medium peaked a lot of people's interest during Xbox's showcase as that game that looked like a survival horror game in which you jump between two worlds to get through a horrific setting of some sort. Though looking back little was shown of anything substantial gameplay wise.

And now having played the game I know why.

It's a walking sim.

Yup. Bloober Team has made another walking sim. The Medium stars a girl names Madeline, who has the power to split herself into the world of the living and the dead at the same time. Here she can talk to dead people, and comfort their restless spirits to cross over into the afterlife peacefully. I guess she technically isn't in the world of the dead but rather a sort of hellish limbo where spirts will stick if not led to the true afterlife they deserve. Thus hauntings and shit happen when these people aren't helped. And Madeline has the power to do so.

Anyway in The Medium you will walk around and listen to inner monologues, pick up notes and listen to ghost memories imprinted upon objects left behind.

The main gimmick showcased in all the media footage was where you saw the main character and a white haired version of her walking through the same area simultaniously except one version's world was all fucked up and hell-like. Periodically in the game you'll play through these sections, where you control both versions of Madeline at mostly the same time. They control in unison for the most part so every movement you make is done to both characters at the same time. Which means they are essentially exploring the exact same map with cosmetic differences. To the games credit the hell world has a very sick looking art design it's very cool . Usually these are the puzzle segments in which the real world Madeline is blocked by some bullshit, and you have to find a thing with ghosty Madeline to unlock it.

There are no enemies, no health bar, and no threats in the game thusfar. All the puzzles are minor, and well.....I mean the game is a walking sim. That's really all there is too it.

And honestly it's not very good. I mean the world is cool with nice art design, the spirits you talk to are all interesting. But there are a lot of issues with the game that pull me out of the experience.

During those split screen moments, the game will kill it's resolution to maintain a stable framerate and I mean KILL it. The single character moments are in 1080p with ease, but the moment the game splitscreens itself the resolution drops to like 480p or worse. Shit looks like a fucking playstation 1 game. It's really jarring. Top that off with the character animation being really kinda shitty. Madeline moves like a robot during conversations, her lips dont move enough to match the dialog which is probably why all the spirits where masks so that they didn't have to do any more facial animations.

I feel like Bloober Team is a development studio with great ideas and concepts, but they do not have the technical ability to bring their visions to life. The Medium has a cool enough idea and fantastic art design that is fundamentally ruined by nothing more than a walking sim.

Oh and they wanna charge $50 for this fucking thing. Which is taking a huge amount of piss.

Get it on game pass if you already have it, because I do think that if you could get it for free or as part of your monthly sub package then it's a cool enough idea to check out. But do not pay more than $10 for this thing and only then if you are into Walking Sims.

My Xbox Series X was finally secured and is arriving tomorrow. I have Game Pass but I planned on getting this from there unless I heard it was awful. From everything I've read, it's kind of a "Good Ideas, Sketchy Execution" kind of thing so your mileage will vary greatly pending how much you tolerate sketchy execution.

But it's the first "True" Xbox Series X game to be released so I plan on checking it out for that reason alone (and you know...free so no problem if a few hours in I decide my sketchy tolerance is minimal).

Yep, another early launch title stinker that people forget about in a year or two.

I skimmed, saw the word “exclusive”...so did you end up getting a XSXbox then?

The Medium? Yeah, seen that name around. Why, what's wrong with it?
Bloober Team
Ah, of course. They're very good at pretty and conceptually interesting games that are disappointingly meh to play.

I would like to point out that this game is getting the typical 8/10's or better from the big review outlets and I don't understand why.

Because games journalists resent their own profession and what it entails.

They have different tastes than you? They might have a greater love of novelty?

I mean, big outlets *love* award bait. That's what makes it award bait

Given their track record, they probably loved the game because it required nothing from them other than hold forward. So it makes sense.

Stop being so mean

They didn't write the review. Bloober Team did it for them

Also, Steam has 9/10. Another great resource for scoring games

Or you need to look at more than one outlet.
Critic score is mixed, user score is mixed, I'd say the pros and the amateurs are pretty in sync

I get that you mostly want to slag off "the big review sites", but c'mon. There's more review sites than PC Gamer and IGN

I do enjoy VN's, which are clicking and reading simulators, so who knows, maybe I might like it and find it genuinely good?

The so-called walking simulator is a valid form of visual medium, it's interactive storytelling, and I assume (given I don't have the patience for that game-type myself) quite immersive. I don't think it should be dismissed because it doesn't test hand-eye co-ordination and twitch reflexes, it's still an artistic product.

Sure a walking sim done right can be good. The Stanley Parable was great, Firewatch was enjoyable, and Journey was incredible.

None of those games were 50 dollars though. Topped of with the Medium's story being formulaic and the technical issues, you have a Game here that had ambitions WAY over its own head.

The big review sites are the ones i check for comparison to my own opinions on a game because those are the sites that get the most views and are also the sites that get there numbers published on the games advertising, which is why they deserve to be slagged off on

Its a jerkoff fest. The game gets a good score from IGN and that score gets put onto the advertising of the game, IGN gets to have its name advertised with the game for free thus bringing more eyes to the site.

Which makes every review like that questionable imo.

I mean if the big sites genuinely like these games but the audience doesnt, shouldnt there be some questions? I feel like that is a big part of why people are more likely to trust independent youtube reviewers than big companies. The same for movies. Are you more likely to see a movie recommended by Jsremy Johnns and Chris Stuckman, or The New York Times?

Now is it possible these gamespot and ign people genuinely liked these games? Yeah, but there is too much shadiness for me. Trust whatever review you want.

Everybody's got opinions:

Funny enough this was the video that made me go try The Medium. I generally agree with a lot of Skill Up's opinions and I like him as a reviewer. His video also reminded me that the game was even coming out, so that was also helpful. That being said I knew going in it was a walking sim, but he talked about puzzles and atmosphere in that review that I thought would add to things when played.

I dunno, maybe if the game was better paced it might have worked better. I also am quite a bit annoyed that they have the balls to charge so much money for a walking sim. When there are countless cheaper games that offer a lot more.
