Well, guys, it looks like we got ourselves three new pokemon games!

Also, gameplay for this one:

Out of the three, my money is certainly on the pokemon legends arceus. Not only does it look gorgeous, but it looks like it's breaking the traditional gameplay format.

I don't really like the way the Diamond and Pearl remake looks. They've interpreted the old sprites in a way that really doesn't gel with me.

I like the fact that they went back to the chibi look but I would agree on it kind of looks a bit awkward in 3D. Man I miss Sprite games.

Edit: New Pokemon Snap looks fun, my main problem is a may not have enough content to justify 60 bucks and see how this is Nintendo I doubt it's going to be 40 bucks.

I'm happy their finally trying something new with pokemon, but ouch that trailer was rough. Cydaquil flame looked like carboard cutout, the world looks barren and empty and everything seems to be running at 5 FPS, hopefully it's very early in development.

Still a bit disappointed that Snap is on rail, could really have been an open world safari game.

I think with any series that's been dormant for over two decades that you can't come out of the gate changing too much. If this one does well then they might branch out with the concept, but best to go with what worked the first time initially.

So I'm getting sent to the middle of nowhere for a month again and I figured I would dust my 3ds off and get a couple games to stave off the creeping madness of the barren countryside.

Got Pokemon Ultramoon or something and gave it a shot. The camera blows. And I hate the graphics, I wish it was just sprites again. In spite of the graphical upgrades, pokemon attack animations don't even look that much better than (I think it was platinum I played last?).

I dunno. I'll play it, but this feels super weak. Also fuck grooming.

I wish the remake you showed above was already out so I could take that instead.

Im a bit of a grump.

The Diamond and Pearl remakes don't look great. The battle scenes look fine, but the overworld looks... wrong. The chibi artstyle tries to be a 3D interpretation of the pixel art, but it really doesn't work here. Not to mention that it barely looks like it is pushing the hardware, like Links Awakening or The Touryst. I really wish that they stuck with the same style as the Gen 3 remakes, or Sun/Moon, but cleaned up the lines. Its really quite ugly.

For the Legends game - im happy that Pokemon games are pushing the boat out, at least a little. But the game itself looks rough. Like, really rough. I get that the game is still in development, but this was not a great state to show off the game. The framerate looks terrible, and the level of detail at a distance makes the game look 2D past a certain point - not to mention that everything looks really barren - Its just hills and long grass - and the colours look really washed out. A lot of people are triumphantly saying that this is "Pokemon's Breath of the Wild", but BotW looks multitudes better, and that is a game from (almost) 4 years ago. Hell, Genshin Impact looks better, running on a phone. What is Nintendo's excuse?

Are pokemon games contractually obliged to look like the worst first-party games on Switch, or something?

I like the look. Pearl looks adorable at 0:27 and I actually like that the overall aesthetic is very similar to the Link's Awakening remake which I loved the artstyle of. I think backing off of realistic looks is something all of the games should be going for anyway. They're already pushing the system with Sword and Shield and Legends is pushing it even more, so I think they'd be better off making the games much more stylized so they can cut back on some of the chugging.

I'm interested in the new Pokemon Snap game, I remember having a lot of fun with the one on the N64. This one looks fun too so I may pick it up at some point.

I love Pokemon but the Diamond and Pearl remakes are not going to be the series 'Breath of the Wild'. Thats the kind of effort they will save for the new generational mainline or some special spin off. The remake works and looks fine; that's all it has to do.

I rather like the style of the Diamond & Pearl remakes.

Legends: Arceus looks... hmmm. If it ends up being a real open-world, like a full-game wild area, then I'm sold. But I never liked just throwing the balls to catch 'mons like in Pokemon Go.

I think pokemon drastically fell apart with the 3d versions. Something about the lack of depth on the 3d models bothers me a lot and i couldnt figure out why for a long time.

Then Sword and Shield came out and i realized that the 3d sprites are fine, but the problem actually comes from a terrible lack of animation. Most pokemon still just stand there in battle doing nothing. They dont look around, they dont fidget, they do nothing. Essentially they act like the sprites from 2d games which doesnt work when you have a full 3d model.

There are other problems as well, but thats i think what really fucks me up with the games nowadays

Its just a *massive* amount of work.

Here is a video from New Frame Plus*, should you care:

*Skipped to the 3D game portion

That aside, I do miss sprite-based Pokemon - they were so charming. But, modern games, means modern expectations, so whatever.

Doesn't mean that I can't hold out hope though. Pixel Pokemon, but with modern mechanics.

I'd actually be interested in that.

Yeah that isnt an excuse imo. "Massive" amount of work my ass, pokemon is the best selling franchise of all time. Everything it does basically prints money and yet every entry since they became 3d has been lazier and lazier.

And they get away with it because kids are stupid and dont know any better. People who have grown up with the games are also going to buy it no matter what so why do anything different? Why improve? Why try anything new?

Every story is the same, every generation is smaller than the last, and that sucks.

Why are people so excited for remakes? Because those were games from when the games were still good. From when they still gave a shit.

New Pokemon games are like Madden, each entry makes billions but also costs less and less to make.

It is maddening to me because with the kind of cash they make they could do sooo much with the series and instead they do nothing.

I highly recommend you watch this video. You and Pat definitely agree on what's the problem with the Pokemon franchise. This video is from 2019.

I agree with your points, and those are ultimately a lot of the reasons which caused me to quit the franchise.

2 near-identical games are released simultaneously every Pokemon generation, and that is just accepted. Many fans are so loyal that they will even happily buy both. Then, a year or so later, they will then possibly go onto release another near-identical game (or two) as some kind of "definitive edition" or whatever - during the same console lifecycle - and then demand full price for it. And that is met with celebration.

It boggles my mind. No other franchise could get away with that.

But, maybe the stagnancy and the bullshit is the reason for the franchise's success. They don't need to change or innovate, because Nintendo is already making buckets of money, and there are hordes of loyal fans ready to suck each entry up. As much as I can sit here and hope that pokemon evolves and innovates, maybe that exact change that I am clamouring for, is exactly what will put the fanbase off. Hence the new trailers, which really didn't impress.
