This pretty much describes me, as well. I also enjoy some games simply for their gameplay, including platformers such as Ratchet and Clank and most indies.
I feel the same way. I understand their purpose, but they can be so frustrating and I've never felt any sense of accomplishment after completing one. It just seems like a lazy design choice to me.

I haven't crashed yet, but I have been experiencing a lot of lag. I can't tell if it's my connection or the servers, but it's been irritating the hell out of me.
I would like to see System Shock 1 & 2, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, and the Marathon series. I know they're all old games, but I have never played them and don't know where else I would find them because I want to try them out.
My guess is that it was just a small meteorite or piece of debris that created a brief flash of light as it burned up in the atmosphere and faded away as it disintegrated.
