Among the last soldiers fighting to defend the Third Reich were actually French. They'd deserted and went to fight for the Nazis. They knew that if they surrenered they'd be executed anyway, so they carried on fighting.

You could try The Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. Incredibly interesting fantasy series, I'd recommend starting with Beyond the Deepwoods, as it sets down a lot of the background. But then dive into either of the other two trilogies =D
