8 Awesome Things New Gamers Will Never Get to Experience

Likewise on the love for arcades, although the current (American) incarnations make me sad. You either get the Chuck-E-Cheese experience, or the Dave & Buster experience; either way, you still end up paying $2 per game for an experience that ends all too quickly. Most of the games aren't even...

Card Hunter - These Are a Few of my Favorite Things

Ah, I played this for a while. It's been a year or so since I last touched it, but my impressions, from what I remember: -Random nature of loot and gear rarity really pushes freemium nature of the game (i.e. It's hard to advance if you aren't paying for loot) -Rare gear rewards for online...

    Remake Retake

I never attached to FF7 the way other folks did, but I played it on PC; that version was ridiculously unstable, so I never finished it. At one point, it caused a crash so bad I had to restore the PC to factory settings. I hadn't even made it to disc 4 yet.

Five Rules for Being a Good Dungeon Master

I find rule 4 (Know what your players want) to be critically important, and probably the reason why there are so many arguments about gaming. If your players want a brutal, merciless game, then GMing that way is fine. If your players just want to feel like bad-asses while crushing the opposition...

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Give In to the Dark Side

I think the gameplay was fleshed out for the sequel, but KotORII is just a mess, otherwise. The game was a mess of bugs and broken quests, and the narrative limped along until it ended rather abruptly, and in an incredibly unsatisfying way. It was clearly a pre-mature release, rushed out to hit...

This Week's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Is All About World-Building

I'm beginning to wish they hadn't introduced those at all. I find shape-shifters (or the tech variant, in this case) to be a really tiresome plot device.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Finally Tackles Its Biggest Mystery

"Hey, we've got, like, four Mjolnirs leftover from Thor 2. You think the Agents crew could use any?"

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Finally Tackles Its Biggest Mystery

One of the things that made me smile was Mack trying to acclimate himself to the status quo. It may be a world of superheroes and mutant inhuman nightmares, but weird is still weird. It'd be a bit too much if they said, "Oh, so the boss was using alien goo to resurrect the dead? Cool. Who wants...

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Continues to Set Up the Story for Season 2

The portrayal of Fitz this season is killing me. They might as well just add a one-legged puppy to the cast.

Bonus Rewards in D&D: Why XP Is the Wrong Way to Go

I also moved away from XP to give levels at proper milestones. I've also tended to give minor benefits, such as temporary HP, +2 to your next attack, +2 to defenses on for a round, etc. They're relatively minor, but they still feel like a proper perk when the players do something I want to...

Zero Punctuation: EarthBound - Not Your Typical JRPG

I don't see this get mentioned frequently, but this right here is the point of half of Earthbound's humor. It's basically a send-up of the "traditional JRPG:" NPCs who wonder why you're rooting through garbage cans for food, tutorials where the NPC forgets to stick with the game's terminology...

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Review - Episode 17: Turn, Turn, Turn

You are a difficult man to please, Bob.

Agreed. I have one question after seeing the movie:

Escapist Podcast: 128: Which Edition of Dungeons & Dragons is Best?

For what it's worth: I started with D&D 3.5, and haven't tried 5E/Next yet, but 4E has been my favorite thus far. It gets a lot of grief for various reasons, but I'll always prefer it to 3.5. That said, FATE has become my go-to RPG system. Love me some FATE.

    Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Review - Episode 12: Seeds

I really enjoyed this episode, although I'm nervous about Skye being the superhero on the team. Also a little disappointed that they went with the "lightning bolt causes superpowers" trope, but I've accepted worse.
