Well, that's how I started. I played a fighter in a pathfinder game and I died a lot. One of the other players could not for the life of him figure out how a fighter in pathfinder was dying so often.

I suggest pathfinder. It's pretty similar to 3.5 D&D so if you are invited to play 3.5 you won't have to learn a new game in order to play. It can seem daunting when you look at the rule book, but you can learn as you go and being a human fighter, which what I would suggest for your first time...

The more you play D&D the more you will learn pointless information. If you are just a player, you can skate on knowing very minimal information on different monsters, classes, races, deities, etc... Just play a human fighter and you are set for life if you like. If you are a DM or dungeon...
