I'd like to recommend the manga "Emma". A classic romance story set in Victorian London (a very well-drawn London). It's one of the most aesthetically pleasing art styles I've seen (gotta love cross-hatching techniques).
I think that anime that appear to age badly can be partially attributed to the fact that people's tastes/preferences can change over time. So what used to be awesome in someone's eyes may not be so a year or 2 later.

Losing all the beefed up items in my inventory on Izuna 2 because I didn't save my progress before the battery in my DS died. Moral of this story: always have your charger nearby and ready in case of battery emergency.
